"This book investigates issues related to health inequality with a
particular interest on developing countries. It provides rigorous
empirical work on both trends and causal factors behind health
inequality, analyzes the implications of health deprivations on
poverty traps and suggests practical policies which can be
implemented"--
With more than a billion people living on less than one dollar per
day, some evidence of increasing gaps in living conditions within
and between countries and the clear evidence of substantial
declines in life expectancy or other health outcomes in some parts
of the world, the related topics of inequality, poverty and
well-being are core international issues. More is known about
inequality, poverty and well-being than ever before as a result of
conceptual and methodological advances and better data. Yet many
debates persist and numerous important questions remain unanswered.
This book examines inequality, poverty and well-being concepts and
corresponding empirical measures. Attempting to push future
research in new and important directions, the book has a strong
analytical orientation, consisting of a mix of conceptual and
empirical analyses that constitute new and innovative contributions
to the research literature.
This book provides analytical insights into if and how the targets
adopted by the international community are likely to be achieved. A
key feature of the analysis is the recognition that most of the MDG
targets are endogenously related. These inter-dependencies are
crucial not only in analyzing the MDGs, but also devising
strategies.

reviews various concepts and measures and provides recommendations
for future practice and research.

core challenge for individuals, governments and international
organizations worldwide. Measures of human well-being levels are an
integral part of this process. This book provides insights into how
human well-being could be better defined and empirically assessed.
