This edition of Henry Morton Stanley's epic account of travels
through Africa in search of Professor Livingstone includes the
original sketches and illustrations of the journey. In the late
1860s, journalist and explorer Henry Morton Stanley was given an
assignment to find and relieve the explorer Dr. David Livingstone.
The respected doctor had not been in contact with civilization
since departing to the wilderness of Africa in 1866, in a quest to
discover the source of the River Nile. Henry M. Stanley set off on
what became a more than two year trek to find Livingstone. He and
his travelling company sojourned over seven hundred miles through
the exotic landscapes and forests of rural Africa. The intense,
tropical environment claimed the lives of many accompanying
porters, while Stanley's horse perished after a deadly bite from a
tsetse fly.
A number of historical events of the twentieth century gave rise to
migration, immigration, and exile to and within the European
continent. This collection represents an effort to raise
consciousness about the marginalization of exiled women - artists,
writers, political figures, as well as members of ethnic and
religious minorities.

This work, originally published in 1895, does not profess to be a
treatise on the subject of feeling, but merely a series of studies,
and rather tentative ones at that. It was the authors intent to
deduce from the standpoint of biologic evolution the origin and
development of feeling, and then to consider how far introspection
confirms these results.

An invaluable text in language and linguistics because it has a
unique scope: a one-volume description of the Spanish language and
its differences from English, and ranges from pronunciation and
grammar to word meaning, language use, and social and dialectical
variation. Designed for survey courses in Spanish linguistics with
technical concepts explained in context for beginners in the field,
"Spanish/English Contrasts" brings out the ways in which insights
into the two languages have evolved as scholars have built on the
work and research of others in the field. A bilingual glossary of
linguistic terms is provided to facilitate discussion in either
language.
This second edition is thoroughly updated to incorporate
insights and issues that have come to the fore from the explosion
of research in the past twenty-five years in all of the areas
covered by the book. It includes an expanded bibliography and
index, and adds new exercises for student application and class
discussion. Its approach remains broadly based however, in order to
accommodate a range of areas and data rather than focusing narrowly
on one single theory or research area, and it continues to
emphasize implications for language teaching, translation, and
other practical applications.
