Fostering Wisdom at Work: Jeff M. Allen Fostering Wisdom at Work
Jeff M. Allen
R662 Discovery Miles 6 620 Ships in 9 - 15 working days

Most people can name dozens of knowledgeable people in their private and business lives, but highly value the very limited number deemed as wise. The fields of gerontology, psychology, and social science have attempted to study the phenomena of wisdom with little significant clarity or understanding of the construct within the expansive workforce development field. Wisdom, as an important aspect of a growing global knowledge economy, lacks the frameworks and theories needed for fostering workplace wisdom. This book brings a scholarly scrutiny to the study of wisdom, propelling the attribute to prominence within the broad field of workforce development and particularly within the growing context of a global knowledge economy. It investigates the characteristics of wisdom and offers theories, frameworks, techniques to foster wisdom in the workplace, recognizing it as a vital key to success for individuals and society. The ideal audience of this book includes senior learning specialists, organization development managers, HRD directors and workforce scholar-practitioners. These key individuals in organizations understand talent management and have a vested interest in the career construction of individuals in their organizations.

Productivity, Competitiveness and Incomes in Asia - An Evolutionary Theory of International Trade (Hardcover): Hans-Peter... Productivity, Competitiveness and Incomes in Asia - An Evolutionary Theory of International Trade (Hardcover)
Hans-Peter Brunner, Peter M. Allen
R2,899 Discovery Miles 28 990 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The authors of this book link productivity change, trade competitiveness, networks of interaction and cooperation and income growth in developing Asian countries with the complex evolutionary processes of economic development and international trade. They take an innovative approach to simulating the complex micro-dynamics of competitiveness in order to distinguish those trade-related microeconomic dynamics and institutional reforms vital to leading countries out of institutional and poverty traps.Real competitiveness changes in six countries (Bangladesh, India, Indonesia, Nepal, Pakistan and Thailand) are measured from 1991 to 2000 with detailed international export unit value comparisons, to detect structural changes towards technology and knowledge intensive goods in trade patterns. No significant structural change was detected in the six countries during that period. Evolutionary trade theory is presented in two models and is calibrated with transaction and trade data from West Bengal and Nepal. These reveal that lower transport costs - resulting from investment in transport and institutional reforms related to the investment and trade environment - result initially in small productivity differences that can be amplified in a non-linear evolutionary system and eventually lead to a spatial restructuring of the system, and to a structural change in the trade patterns. The models in this path-breaking book can be used to explore the impact of a variety of interventions and policies. Productivity, Competitiveness and Incomes in Asia will be of interest to academics and researchers in Asian Studies, industrial economics, evolutionary economics and international business development. The book will also appeal to policy makers responsible for economic growth.

Female Desire in Chaucer's Legend of Good Women and Middle English Romance (Paperback): Lucy M. Allen-Goss Female Desire in Chaucer's Legend of Good Women and Middle English Romance (Paperback)
Lucy M. Allen-Goss
R599 Discovery Miles 5 990 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

An examination of female same-sex desire in Chaucer and medieval romance. In both medieval and modern contexts, women who do not desire men invite awkward silences. Men's dissident sexual practices have been discussed energetically by writers of law and religion, medicine and morality; reams of medieval texts are devoted to horrified or fascinated references to men's deviant intimacies with men. Yet women - despite the best efforts of recent scholars - remain at the margins of this picture, especially in studies of literature. This book aims to re-centre female desire. Identifying a feminine or lesbian hermeneutic in late-medieval English literature, it offers new approaches to medieval texts often denigrated for their omissions and fragmentation, their violence and uneven poetic texture. The hermeneutic tradition Chaucer inherited, stretching from Jerome to Jean de Meun, represents female bodies as blank tablets awaiting masculine inscription, rather than autonomous agents. In the Legend, Chaucer considers the unspoken problem of female desires and bodies that resist, evade, and orient themselves away from such a position. Can women take on hermeneutic authority, that phallic capacity, without rendering themselves monstrous or self-defeating? This question resonates through three Middle English romances succeeding the Legend: the alliterative Morte Arthure, the Sowdone of Babylon, and Undo Your Door. With combative innovation, they repurpose the hermeneutic tradition and Chaucer's use of it to celebrate an array of audacious female desires and embodiments which cross and re-cross established categories of masculine and feminine, licit and illicit, animate and inanimate. Together, these texts make visible the desires and the embodiments of women who otherwise slip out of visibility, in both medieval and post-medieval contexts.

Psychotherapy With Borderline Patients - An Integrated Approach (Paperback): David M. Allen Psychotherapy With Borderline Patients - An Integrated Approach (Paperback)
David M. Allen
R1,439 Discovery Miles 14 390 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Patients with borderline personality disorder (BPD) or borderline traits are among the most difficult for mental health practitioners to treat. They present an incredible range of symptoms, dysfunctional interpersonal interactions, provocative behavior in therapy, and comorbid psychiatric disturbances. So broad is this array that indeed the disorder constitutes a virtual model for the study of all forms of self-destructive and self-defeating behavior patterns. Psychotherapy With Borderline Patients: An Integrated Approach fills the need for a problem-focused, clinically oriented, and operationalized treatment manual that addresses major ongoing family factors that trigger and reinforce the patient's self-destructive or self-defeating behavior. In it, David Allen draws on the theoretical ideas and techniques of biological, family systems, psychodynamic, and cognitive-behavioral therapists to describe an integrated approach to adults with BPD or borderline traits in individual therapy. Innovative, practical, and specific, the book * helps therapists teach their patients, through the use of various role-playing techniques, strategies to alter the dysfunctional patterns of interaction with their families of origin that reinforce self-destructive behavior or chronic affective symptoms; * explains the nature and origins of the characteristic oscillation of hostile over- and underinvolvement between adults with BPD and those who served as their primary parental figures during childhood; * elucidates the nature and causes of the dysfunctional communication patterns in patients' families that lead to misunderstanding; and * provides concrete, clearly spelled out advice for therapists about how to deal with provocative patient behavior, how to minimize distorted descriptions by patients of significant others, how to avoid patients' misuse of medications, and how to respond to managed care restrictions on patients' insurance coverage. Psychotherapy With Borderline Patients: An Integrated Approach will be welcomed by all clinicians who work with these patients, whatever their training or theoretical orientation.

An Industrial Geography of Cocaine (Paperback): Christian M. Allen An Industrial Geography of Cocaine (Paperback)
Christian M. Allen
R1,460 Discovery Miles 14 600 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Latin American cocaine trafficking organizations comprise an indigenous, globally competitive, multinational industry. Their business operations are deeply ingrained within the economic and political systems of countries throughout the region. While criminal enterprises operate in a more complex and uncertain setting than licit firms, their competitive success is determined in fundamentally similar ways. Models developed by geographers to explain the spatial behavior of licit multinational firms are profitably applied here to the operations of drug trafficking operations.

Madagascar - Conflicts Of Authority In The Great Island (Hardcover): Philip M. Allen Madagascar - Conflicts Of Authority In The Great Island (Hardcover)
Philip M. Allen
R4,150 Discovery Miles 41 500 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The world's fourth largest island, with a unique biological and physical endowment, Madagascar is home to an extraordinary insular civilization that has struggled for more than a century against external domination. In this sensitive introduction to the Indian Ocean's "great island," Philip Allen shows how family affinities and community loyalties at the foundation of Madagascar's culture have influenced Malagasy nationalism and forged islandwide traditions. These same principles have nonetheless engendered social cleavages and resistance to economic and political change. In chapters on modern Madagascar, Allen analyzes the inability of a series of regimes to maintain authority among a people deeply bound to rituals of communication with their spiritual environment. He demonstrates how the first Malagasy Republic became stigmatized by its lingering identification with French colonialism and how the nationalist revolution in 1972 soon hardened into autocratic radicalism. Allen explores the complex challenges facing Madagascar's resurgent democratic forces-including a need to conserve the island's irreplaceable biodiversity and to facilitate authentic participation in public affairs without offending ancestral customs and local precedents. Finally, he discusses efforts to end Madagascar's economic and political dependence and to improve living conditions for its tragically impoverished population.

Cities and Regions as Self-Organizing Systems - Models of Complexity (Paperback): Peter M. Allen Cities and Regions as Self-Organizing Systems - Models of Complexity (Paperback)
Peter M. Allen
R1,719 Discovery Miles 17 190 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

A clear methodological and philosophical introduction to complexity theory as applied to urban and regional systems is given, together with a detailed series of modelling case studies compiled over the last couple of decades. Based on the new complex systems thinking, mathematical models are developed which attempt to simulate the evolution of towns, cities, and regions and the complicated co-evolutionary interaction there is both between and within them. The aim of these models is to help policy analysis and decision-making in urban and regional planning, energy policy, transport policy, and many other areas of service provision, infrastructure planning, and investment that are necessary for a successful society.

Fundamentals of Ion Trap Mass Spectrometry presents an account of the development and theory of the quadrupole ion trap and its utilization as an ion storage device, a reactor for ion/molecular reactions, and a mass spectrometer. It also expands the appreciation of ion traps from that of a unique arrangement of electrodes of hyperbolic form (and having a pure quadrupole field) to a series of ion traps having fields with hexapole and octopole components and introduces the practical ion trapping device in which electrode spacing has been increased.
The fundamentals of ion trap are covered in four chapters, beginning with the origin of the ion trap, its development and operating principles, and improvements in performance. The second part focuses on the environment within the ion trap -- the movement of ions within the trap -- and how this movement is modified by repeated collisions of the ions with buffer gas atoms of helium, and on the collisions of ions with molecules that lead to chemical change. The critical role of collisions in focusing the ion cloud for subsequent operations is emphasized.
This important reference presents a coherent picture of the present status of research in the ion trapping field to facilitate the entree of potential ion trappers and provide a backdrop for ion trap research and development in the future.

By delivering concentrated information in three different volumes, the editors of the Practical Aspects of Ion Trap Mass Spectrometry mini-series present in-depth reviews on mainstream developments in each active and popular area. Contributing authors provide concise reports illustrating successful approaches to difficult analytical problems across the basic scientific disciplines.
Ion Trap Instrumentation, the second volume in the series, conveys an appreciation of the ion trap as a versatile instrument which is used successfully in research and in applications, often in tandem with other instruments or components, such as external ion sources and lasers.
The book begins with a discussion of high resolution mass spectrometry and mass measurement accuracy. It then demonstrates that trajectories of high kinetic energy ions can be controlled so that such ions are confined. It provides applications of lasers to the study of trapped ions the laser photodissociation of gaseous ions confined within the ion trap. The book concludes with physics applications of the ion trap, in particular, the Penning trap and the Paul trap.

Groupthink in Science - Greed, Pathological Altruism, Ideology, Competition, and Culture (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2020): David M.... Groupthink in Science - Greed, Pathological Altruism, Ideology, Competition, and Culture (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2020)
David M. Allen, James W. Howell
R2,737 Discovery Miles 27 370 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book discusses one of the hottest topics in science today, i.e., the concern over certain problematic practices within the scientific enterprise. It raises questions and, more importantly, begins to supply answers about one particularly widespread phenomenon that sometimes impedes scientific progress: group processes. The book looks at many problematic manifestations of "going along with the crowd" that are adopted at the expense of truth. Closely related is the concept of pathological altruism or altruism bias-the tendency of scientists to bias their research in order to further the ideological or financial interests of an "in-group" at the expense of both the interest of other groups as well as the truth. The book challenges the widespread notion that science is invariably a benevolent, benign process. It defines the scientific enterprise, in practice as opposed to in theory, as a cultural system designed to produce factual knowledge. In effect, the book offers a broad and unique take on an important and incompletely explored subject: research and academic discourse that sacrifices scientific objectivity, and perhaps even the scientist's own ethical standards, in order to further the goals of a particular group of researchers or reinforce their shared belief system or their own interests, whether economic, ideological, or bureaucratic.

Literary History in and beyond China - Reading Text and World (Hardcover): Sarah M. Allen, Jack W Chen, Xiaofei Tian Literary History in and beyond China - Reading Text and World (Hardcover)
Sarah M. Allen, Jack W Chen, Xiaofei Tian
R1,065 Discovery Miles 10 650 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Literary History in and beyond China: Reading Text and World explores the idea of literary history across the long span of the Chinese tradition. Although much scholarship on Chinese literature may be characterized as doing the work of literary history, there has been little theoretical engagement with received literary historical categories and assumptions, with how literary historical judgments are formed, and with what it means to do literary history in the first place. The present collection of essays addresses these questions from perspectives emerging both from within the tradition and from without, examining the anthological histories that shape the concept of a particular genre, the interpretive positions that impel our aesthetic judgments, the conceptual categories that determine how literary history is framed, and the history of literary historiography itself. As such, the essays collectively consider what it means to think through the framework of literary history, what literary history affords or omits, and what needs to be theorized in terms of literary history’s constraints and possibilities.
