This is the first in a series of volumes which together will
provide an entirely new history of ancient Greek (narrative)
literature. Its organization is formal rather than biographical. It
traces the history of central narrative devices, such as the
narrator and his narratees, time, focalization, characterization,
description, speech, and plot. It offers not only analyses of the
handling of such a device by individual authors, but also a larger
historical perspective on the manner in which it changes over time
and is put to different uses by different authors in different
genres. The first volume lays the foundation for all volumes to
come, discussing the definition and boundaries of narrative, and
the roles of its producer, the narrator, and recipient, the
narratees.
This is the second publication in Brill's handbook series "The
Classical Tradition. The subject of this volume is that group of
works of extended prose narrative fiction which bears many
similarities to the modern novel and which appeared in the later
classical periods in Greece and Rome. The ancient novel has enjoyed
renewed popularity in recent years not only among students of
literature, but also among those looking for new sources on the
popular culture of antiquity and among scholars of religion. The
volume surveys the new insights and approaches to the ancient novel
which have emerged form the application of a variety of disciplines
in the recent years.
The 25 senior scholars contributing to the volume are drawn from a
broad range of European and North American traditions of
scholarship. Chapters cover the important issues dealing with the
novel, novelists, novel-like works of fiction, their development,
transformation, Christianisation and Nachleben, as well as a broad
range of matters, from literary/philological to cultural/historical
and religious, which concerns modern scholars in the field.

bekend te stel en hoe om leerders met steierwerk voor te berei en
te ondersteun. Al die antwoorde word gegee; jy bespaar dus tyd
omdat jy nie die oefeninge self hoef uit te werk nie. ’n
Volkleurplakkaat en ’n CD propvol hulpbronne is ook ingesluit om
jou met onderrig en assessering te help. Addisionele voorbeeldvrae,
toetse of assesserings take, wat jy kan kopieer, sal jou help om
jou leerders effektief te assesseer.
The series was written to be aligned with CAPS. A possible work
schedule has been included. Each topic start with an overview of
what is taught, and the resources you need. There is advice on
pave-setting to assist you in completing the work for the year on
time. Advice on how to introduce concepts and scaffold learning is
given for every topic. All the answers have been given to save you
time doing the exercises yourself. Also included are a full-colour
poster and CD filled with resources to assist you in your teaching
and assessment.
