Microbiological risk assessment (MRA) is one of the most important
recent developments in food safety management. Adopted by Codex
Alimentarius and many other international bodies, it provides a
structured way of identifying and assessing microbiological risks
in food. Edited by two leading authorities, and with contributions
by international experts in the field, Microbiological risk
assessment provides a detailed coverage of the key steps in MRA and
how it can be used to improve food safety.
The book begins by placing MRA within the broader context of the
evolution of international food safety standards.
Part one introduces the key steps in MRA methodology. A series of
chapters discusses each step, starting with hazard identification
and characterisation before going on to consider exposure
assessment and risk characterisation. Given its importance, risk
communication is also covered. Part two then considers how MRA can
be implemented in practice. There are chapters on implementing the
results of a microbiological risk assessment and on the qualitative
and quantitative tools available in carrying out a MRA. It also
discusses the relationship of MRA to the use of microbiological
criteria and another key tool in food safety management, Hazard
Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) systems.
With its authoritative coverage of both principles and key issues
in implementation, Microbiological risk assessment in food
processing is a standard work on one of the most important aspects
of food safety management.

The recent outbreaks of E.coli and BSE have ensured that the issue
of meat safety has never had such a high profile. Meanwhile HACCP
has become the preferred tool for the management of microbiological
safety. Against a background of consumer and regulatory pressure,
the effective implementation of HACCP systems is critical. Written
by leading experts in the field, HACCP in the meat industry
provides an authoritative guide to making HACCP systems work
effectively.
This book examines the HACCP in the meat industry across the supply
chain, from rearing through to primary and secondary processing.
Perovskite Solar Cells considers the challenges and technological
barriers and opportunities towards commercializing perovskite solar
cells. First the book provides brief overview of history of
perovskite solar cells in context of rise of photovoltaics and an
overview of materials systems being considered for these
technologies. Then, five main aspects of commercialization are
examined including, performance, processability, sustainability,
potential applications, and economics. The materials properties
including their merits and drawbacks are discussed along with their
relationship to commercial viability with the aim of identifying
gaps for further growth in the area.Perovskite Solar Cells is
suitable for materials scientists and engineers in academia and
R&D interested materials for energy applications.
This book addresses the breakdown of failed democratic systems in
Latin America and the Caribbean. The scope of this investigation is
a study of political systems of Venezuela, Colombia, and Nicaragua.
The implications of the present research on democratic purgatory
have real-world applications not only for the above countries but
also for those political systems that are currently transitioning
and/or consolidating their democracies as well. Â
The foundation for a safe school rests on the creation of a healthy
school climate, a caring community where students feel safe and
relationships facilitate prosocial growth as well as academic
learning. A balance of structure and support is essential, and
requires an organized, schoolwide approach that is practiced by all
school personnel. Codes of student conduct that rest on core
ethical values rather than just rules and punishment are a start.
Recognizing that teachers are moral educators and schools model
expectations for citizenship undergirds the prosocial school. From
PBIS and restorative justice to mindfulness and the importance of
play, from academic integrity to peer group support, we examine the
science and evidence-informed programs that support a prosocial
approach to school discipline. Eight schools from across the
country that have struggled and learned to be beacons of prosocial
school approaches are highlighted through summaries and links to
their stories. Proactive responses to the U.S. Department of
Education's Guiding Principles on School Discipline are provided by
education law experts from the National School Climate Center and
the New Jersey Principal's and Supervisor's Association.

College and career readiness is essential to promoting the success
of all students. Educational and economic changes in today's
society demands well thought out strategies for preparing students
to survive academically, socially, and financially in the future.
African American students are at a disadvantage in this strategic
planning process due to a long history of racism, injustice, and
marginalization. African American Students' Career and College
Readiness: The Journey Unraveled explores the historical, legal,
and socio-political issues of education affecting African American
students and their career and college readiness. Each chapter has
been written based on the authors' experience and passion for the
success of students in the African American population. Some of the
chapters will appear to be written in a more conversational and
idiomatic tone, whereas others are presented in a more erudite
format. Each chapter, however, presents a contextual portrayal of
the contemporary, and often dysfunctional, pattern of society's
approach to supporting this population. Contributors also present
progressive paradigms for future achievements. Through the pages of
this book, readers will understand and hopefully appreciate what
can be done to promote positive college bound self-efficacy,
procurement of resources in the high school to college transition,
exposure and access to college possibilities, and implications for
practice in school counseling, education leadership, and higher
education.

"Strong on the Outside, Dying on the Inside is a wonderfully
written tribute to faith, courage, hope and healing."Don't be
fooled by the small size of this book. In it, Lisa Brown packs a
powerful message of liberation: With the help of God and qualified
professionals, Black women can break free from depression.A
successful businesswoman in Washington, D.C., Lisa uses her own
experience and the Biblical story of Hannah to shed light on the
unspoken sadness that plagues so many Black women today. With the
energy, humor and compassion of a close girlfriend, she describes
the signs of depression and charts a way out.Depression is an
equal-opportunity illness. But Black women - especially those who
consider themselves strong - are particularly reluctant to seek
help: Only 12 percent of those affected receive treatment. Why this
resistance? Citing contemporary experts, Lisa points to reasons
rooted in African American culture: the widespread belief that
depression is nothing more than a bad attitude, a case of the
blues, or a sign of personal weakness.Emotional needs are not
easily acknowledged by women who have been the backbone of their
communities while enduring the harsh realities of slavery, bigotry
and bias. What's more, many of these God-fearing, church-going women
may resign themselves to depression, accepting their sadness as a
fact of life that God, the church and their families expect them to
bear.Lisa rejects that interpretation, reminding Black women that
God offers them both joy and peace. She urges readers to draw on
their inner strength not to deny depression, but to face and
overcome it.Lisa calls herself "a living testimony to the value of
good therapy and God's undeniable ability to heal depression." In
these pages, she reaches out to strong Black women, inviting them
to embrace the same blessing and recover a life of promise and
purpose.www.strongontheoutside.com
Used in a variety of courses in various disciplines, Asking the
Right Questions helps students bridge the gap between simply
memorizing or blindly accepting information, and the greater
challenge of critical analysis and synthesis. Specifically, this
concise text teaches students to think critically by exploring the
components of arguments--issues, conclusions, reasons, evidence,
assumptions, language--and on how to spot fallacies and
manipulations and obstacles to critical thinking in both written
and visual communication. It teaches them to respond to alternative
points of view and develop a solid foundation for making personal
choices about what to accept and what to reject.
All of my poems are about things that I see or feel -- the every
day happenings that are around us. Mostly they are just plain
thoughts that come into my head.
