The Politics of Public Sector Reform - From Thatcher to the Coalition (Paperback): M. Burton The Politics of Public Sector Reform - From Thatcher to the Coalition (Paperback)
M. Burton
R1,538 Discovery Miles 15 380 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The UK public sector faces an unprecedented long-term challenge. A decade of plenty in the public finances has been followed by a decade and more of austerity. Public services are undergoing long-term annual spending cuts even as demographic changes create soaring demand in health, education and adult care. The challenge for the public sector is how to radically transform and adapt to the new era while avoiding the mistakes of previous reform programmes. In this first comprehensive 'bird's eye' account of public sector reform supported by studies from over 400 official sources, the book offers an invaluable practical guide to all those in the public, private and voluntary sectors grappling with the twin challenges of public spending austerity and the pressure to transform public services and ensure they are 'fit for purpose.'

Linda M Burton, Susan P. Kemp, Manchui Leung, Stephen A Matthews, David T. Takeuchi
R2,951 Discovery Miles 29 510 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Place is an important element in understanding health and health care disparities. More that merely a geographic location, place is a socio-ecological force with detectable effects on social life, independent well-being, and health. Despite the general enthusiasm for the study of place and the potential it could have for a better understanding of the distribution of health in different communities, research is at a difficult crossroads because of disagreements in how the construct should be conceptualized and measured. This edited volume incorporates an cross-disciplinary approach to the study of place, in order to come up with a comprehensive and useful definition of place. Topics covered include: Social Inequalities, Historical Definitions of Place, Biology and Place, Rural vs. Urban Places, Racialization of a Place, Migration, Sacred Places, Technological Innovations An understanding of place is essential for health care professionals, as interventions often do not have the same effects in the clinic as they do in varied, naturalistic social settings.

Biomembranes - Dynamics and Biology (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1984): Robert M Burton Biomembranes - Dynamics and Biology (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1984)
Robert M Burton
R1,616 Discovery Miles 16 160 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

A NATO Advanced Study Institute held in Portugal in 1968 on cellular biology directed our attention to the important role that biological membranes played in the fundamental life processes, e.g. the transportation of cellular nutrients into cells and into subcellular par- ticles coupled with energy use/or generation. A consi- deration of biomembranes and their structure led us to organize a self-supporting course in 1972 under the gen- eral sponsorship of the American Oil Chemists' Society on "Fundamentals of Lipid Chemistry." This course con- cluded with important papers on lipoproteins, membrane structure and membrane models. The papers presented at the short course were published under the same title. With the background of the lipid course, a third program was developed entitled "Biomembranes - Lipids, Proteins and Receptors" and held as a NATO Advanced Study Insti- tute in 1974. This ASI explored the structure of bio- membranes and the relationship of non-lipid components to membrane function. This ASI was also published to provide the conference proceedings to interested scien- tists who could not attend.

Design Models for Hierarchical Organizations: Computation, Information, and Decentralization provides state-of-the-art research on organizational design models, and in particular on mathematical models. Each chapter views the organization as an information processing entity. Thus, mathematical models are used to examine information flow and decision procedures, which in turn, form the basis for evaluating organization designs. Each chapters stands alone as a contribution to organization design and the modeling approach to design. Moreover, the chapters fit together and that totality gives us a good understanding of where we are with this approach to organizational design issues and where we should focus our research efforts in the future.

R4,668 Discovery Miles 46 680 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The design of organizations has been a prime characteristic of management theory and practice over the past several decades. However, there has been little change in the fundamental theory, principles and concepts of Organization Design since the introduction of contingency theory in the 1970a (TM)s. Nevertheless, over the past 25 years organizational reality has changed dramatically with the advent of all sorts of communication systems, AI agents, information technology, knowledge management systems, and more. Therefore leading researchers in Organization Design a" who understand the situation a" have undertaken to address the problem.

Organization Design: The Evolving State-of-the-Art will be organized in four sections: (1) Theoretical and Practical Issues, (2) Fit, Contingency and Configuration, (3) Design and Performance, and (4) The Dynamics of Adaptation and Change. The book will be a broad discussion of topics in the field, but still each individual paper will provide in depth analysis of the topic. A common element and theme to all of the chapters is a focus on core theories in organization design and emerging perspectives.

The book will be a 2005-benchmark publication of organization design theory, principles and concepts, and on the basis of this benchmark publication, the editors will encourage researchers and students to further develop the field. The recent development in organization design has been sporadic; hence this book will be an important step in creating better theoretical models and stronger empirical analyses that take advantage of advances in estimation methods allowing for more complex causal modeling and stimulation technologies.

Turning Points - Responsive Pedagogies in Studio Art Education: Richard Jochum, Judith M. Burton, Jason Watson Turning Points - Responsive Pedagogies in Studio Art Education
Richard Jochum, Judith M. Burton, Jason Watson
R1,285 Discovery Miles 12 850 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Turning Points invites readers to join in a dialogue about creating more responsive studio art pedagogies for all, following a global pandemic that forced art educators to do what many believed to be impossible: teach studio art online. Amidst this sudden shift, long-simmering social and political challenges pushed to the forefront, such as racial injustice, access to educational resources, economic inequality, and environmental degradation. As these issues compounded, art educators and art students navigated a radical shift in priorities--rethinking the materials, spaces, and relationships that form the foundation of the discipline. This collection of essays brings together international voices from across the field to share the lived experience of responsive teaching during the pandemic, and how we might rebuild a better educational ecosystem. Chapters address how new technologies, more inclusive spaces, and a heightened focus on relationships will reshape the studio art programs of the future. Book Features: Synthesizes diverse cultural viewpoints from both leaders and practitioners in the field of art education. Focuses on the impact of the pandemic and its aftermath on studio art teaching and learning. Connects art education to sociocultural world issues, student wellness, mentorship, equity, and racial inequality. Offers suggestions for how to move the field forward to meet the challenges of the 21st century.

Nicola Lercari, Willeke Wendrich, Benjamin W. Porter, Margie M Burton, Thomas E. Levy
R2,436 Discovery Miles 24 360 Ships in 9 - 15 working days

In late August 2015, international media outlets and cultural institutions reported that the Islamic State beheaded the Syrian scholar Khaled al Asaad and destroyed the 1st-century CE Temple of Bel in Palmyra, Syria. The world was horrorstruck. Apart from the human tragedy, archaeologists and the international communities were shocked by the wanton destruction of ancient remains that had survived for millennia. However, warfare and ideological destruction contribute just a fraction of the ongoing devastation of our forebears' traces. This book brings attention to the magnitude of the silent loss of cultural heritage occurring worldwide and the even more insidious loss of knowledge due to the lack of publication and preservation of original data, notes, plans, and photographs of excavated archaeological sites. Highlighting a growing sense of urgency to intervene in whatever way possible, this book provides readers with a non-technical overview of how archaeologists and other stakeholders are increasingly turning to digital methods to mitigate some of the threats to at-risk cultural heritage. This volume is a gateway to enhancing the scale and reach of capturing, analyzing, managing, curating, and disseminating cultural heritage knowledge in sustainable ways and promoting collaboration among scholars and stakeholder communities.

Steve Bartlett, Diana M. Burton
R1,158 Discovery Miles 11 580 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

`The essays are thematically well organized and lucidly presented. In terms of design, contents and presentation, this is undoubtedly an excellent textbook' - Journal of Educational Planning and Administration `Education Studies: Essential Issues' is a book similar in style to the editor's first volume 'Introduction to Education Studies', both books introducing a variety of broad educational issues while analyzing certain areas in greater depth. Whereas the first book dealt with wider perspectives on education (i.e. research, politics and policy, psychological theory), this book deals with more specific issues with chapters viewing education through early years and compulsory schooling to post-compulsory and higher education, through to lifelong learning. Ultimately this book is quite unique due to the collection of chapters and is a worthy addition to any university bookshelf or as a key text for mandatory education modules' - Scott Buckler, University of Worcester, for Escalate `This book is essential reading for all those concerned about education, especially for those working within the education system' - International Journal of Educational Management `[Education Studies] is an informed and informative introduction. Teachers as well as student teachers will find it stimulating and valuable. Topics it covers well include teacher management and teacher professionalism' - Michael Duffy, Times Educational Supplement This key text provides an overview of current theoretical issues, areas of study and major themes that are covered in education studies programmes. Chapters include: - globalization - differentiation - early childhood - special needs - citizenship and education - lifelong learning - post-compulsory education - higher education - management and professionalism in teaching - education and economic development. Prominent contributors in each field provide students with a solid grounding in the areas they will be studying and point the way to further successful study. Now in its fourth edition, this is the definitive step-by-step 'how to' guide to designing an organization. Building on information processing theory, the book proposes a holistic, multi-contingency model of the organization. This textbook communicates the fundamentals of traditional and new organizational forms, including up-to-date analysis of self-organizing, boss-less, digital, and sustainable organizations. Providing a framework for the practical implementation of organizational design changes, the authors break the process down into seven basic steps: (1) Assessing Goals, (2) Assessing Strategy, (3) Analyzing Structure, (4) Assessing Process and People, (5) Analyzing Coordination, Control and Incentives, (6) Designing the Architecture, and (7) Implementing the Architecture. Each step connects with one of the nine interdependent components of the multi-contingency model, and the authors also provide a logical query process for approaching each of these components. This is an ideal guide for managers or executives interested in assessing their organization and taking steps to redesign it for success, as well as for MBA and executive MBA students looking for an introduction to organizational design.
