Cats are one of the most popular pets in the world and cat owners
want advanced veterinary care. There is a growing interest in
purebred cats which requires the highest quality reproductive care
from the general veterinary practitioners. In Feline Reproduction,
all aspects of reproduction in the queen and the tom are presented
by a global author team. Beginning with basic anatomy and normal
reproduction, this book reviews practical knowledge about feline
pregnancy, neonatal care, breeding soundness exams, and semen
cryopreservation. This book also provides the most current and
comprehensive information about abnormal conditions affecting
feline reproduction, such as infertility, spontaneous abortion and
contraception. Covering both pets and nondomestic species, this
feline reproduction book will prove to be essential for the general
veterinary practitioner, veterinary student, animal scientist, and
experienced cat breeder.
A CHOICE Outstanding Academic Title 2014! Why do parents hit those
they love? What effect does it have on children? What can be done
to end this pattern? These are some of the questions explored in
The Primordial Violence. Featuring longitudinal data from over
7,000 U.S. families as well as results from a 32 nation study, the
book presents the latest research on the extent to which spanking
is used in different cultures and the subsequent effects of its use
on children and on society. Evidence that shows the relationship
between spanking and the subsequent slowing of cognitive
development and increase in antisocial and criminal behavior is
shown. Both cross-sectional and longitudinal studies are explored
in an accessible fashion. An abundance of high quality research has
produced findings that are highly consistent from study to study
which show that spanking is a risk factor for aggressive behavior
and other social and psychological problems. Because of these
findings, the authors argue for policy changes and recommend a
drastic reduction in the use of spanking. Policy and practical
implications are explored in most chapters. The Primordial Violence
highlights: The benefits of avoiding spanking such as the
development of better interpersonal skills and higher academic
achievement; The link between spanking and behavioral problems and
crime; The extent to which spanking is declining and why despite
the unusually high level of agreement between numerous studies
which found harmful effects from spanking, most parents continue to
spank. Part 1 documents the worldwide use of spanking and why
parents spank. The possible adverse effects of spanking on
children's behavior and academic achievement, and the potential for
violence and criminal behavior in later life, are explored in Parts
2, 3, and 4. Part 5 examines trends in spanking, and suggests what
can be done to lower the percent of parents who spank.
Contradictory opinions about whether to spank are explored. The
book concludes with a call for change in this aspect of parenting
which will have profound benefits, for the children and families
involved, and society as a whole. Intended for a general audience
of readers who are interested in child development and parenting
and for advanced undergraduate and/or graduate courses in child
abuse, family violence, juvenile delinquency, criminal behavior,
social development, sociology of the family, or parenting and
family relations taught in psychology, human development, family
studies, criminology, education, social work, sociology, and social
policy.

interrogates the language used by politicians, the media and the
public, uncovering increasingly problematic, scaremongering,
xenophobic and incendiary linguistic strategies used to divide us
from them.
This book focuses on the prevention of child abuse and neglect
deaths in the U.S. In 2013 1,520 children died from maltreatment.
This book defines child maltreatment fatalities (CMFs) and
discusses the prevalence of deaths in the U.S. over the last
several decades. It addresses the known risk factors for
maltreatment deaths including child, parent, the parent-child
relationship, and household risk factors. The main focus of the
book addresses the responses and interventions that have been put
in place in order to prevent CMFs: the child welfare profession,
child death review teams, safe haven laws, criminal justice
responses, public education, and new, federal efforts in the U.S.
to reduce CMFs in the U.S. The book finishes by making
recommendations for researchers, practitioners, and decision-makers
about how to prevent fatal maltreatment among children in the U.S.

For old and new studies in decision making and risk analysis, this
book should stand at tlle watershed. Studies of conflict resolution
and public policy will surely now have to take account of the model
investigation provided by the IIASA team, and many things will not
be the same again. This is a report of inquiries into the siting of
liquefied energy gas (LEG) facilities in the Federal Republic of
Germany, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, and the United
States. The risks of transporting this highly combustible stuff,
and the economic benefits of being able to bring a natural energy
source from one side of the globe to the other, holding it, and
piping it out as needed, make LEG a model case for studying the
public response to dangerous technology. The dangers of LEG are
differ ent from those of nuclear power, for instance, where the
response too often becomes entangled with the fear of nuclear war.
The dangers of LEG include unco trollable explosions, rather than
insidious contami nation. But the degree of dangerousness is very
much of the same order as that of nuclear power, and is at least as
difficult to assess. In four different countries the constitutional
procedures involved in obtaining approval of nuclear or LEG
facilities are on record. The four case histories here are a model
for comparative study of conflict resolu tion. The period over
which the negotiations developed is much the same."
Fundamentals of Adsorption is the proceedings of the fifth
International Conference on the Fundamentals of Adsorption, which
was held on May 13-18, 1995 at the Asilomar Conference Center,
Pacific Grove, California. This conference was organized completely
under the auspices of the International Adsorption Society. It was
attended by 196 participants from 24 countries. Members of the
Scientific Advisory Board, together with the Conference Committee,
selected papers for presentation from a large number of proposals
involving an especially high level of international participation.
The fundamental aspects of adsorption is a subject which has grown
rapidly in recent years, drawing researchers from many disciplines
including materials science, chemistry, physics, biochemistry and
biotechnology, and chemical, civil, mechanical and environmental
engineering. Fundamentals of Adsorption serves as an excellent
reference and may be used as a primary text for a graduate level
course on adsorption research or as a secondary text for a course
on any of the disciplines mentioned above.
Adsorption processes have experienced a significant growth in the
last decades. This growth was a result of scientific and
technological advances which generated new adsorbents as well as
new concepts for processing systems (UOP's "Sorbex" process and PSA
cycles). The expectations for a continued development of adsorption
are high since process engineering is deeply concerned with
intensive processes using less energy. Adsorption processes are
also relevant to the increasingly important area of biotechonology.
The development of affinity processes is a creative synthesis of
biochemistry, molecular biology and chemical engineering. This NATO
Advanced Study Institute on "ADSORPTION: SCIENCE and TECHNOLOGY"
had as a primary objective to provide an updated treatment of the
fundamentals of adsorption and adsorption processes. The lectures
presented at the Institute are collected in this volume together
with a few papers presented by participants. The material is
arranged in four sections.Part I deals with the characterization of
adsorption and thermodynamics of adsorption, namely the correlation
of equilibrium data.Part II covers the kinetics of adsorption and
fixed-bed processes (equilibrium theory, design aspects, adsorptive
reactors).Part III is an extensive coverage of cyclic processes
(pressure swing adsorption and thermal swing adsorption) and
simulated moving beds (modeling for process optimization and
industrial applications). Finally Part IV deals with applications
mainly in biotechnolo gy (con tin uous adsorption, affini ty chrom
atography, gel permeation, chromatographic reactors, scale-up
methods).
Before AIDS, the role of behavioral interventions in preventing
transmission of sexually transmitted diseases was acknowledged in
text books and journals but rarely promoted effectively in public
health practice. Informed by a comprehensive knowledge of
behavioral theory, intervention methods, and affected populations,
the authors of this important book examine the central role of
behavioral interventions in combating STDs. The book addresses the
complexities and social contexts of human behaviors which spread
STDs, the cultural barriers to STD education (ranging from
conservative mores to stay out of my bedroom libertarianism), and
the sociopolitical nuances surrounding treatment. Over forty
contributors offer a practical appraisal of what is being done now
and what can be improved, such as: an overview of current
behavioral and biomedical interventions for STD prevention and
control, a discussion of what works for individuals, groups, and
communities, up to date thinking about such traditional prevention
approaches as partner notification and health care seeking, STD
prevention strategies with high-risk populations, including drug
users, gay men, teenagers, incarcerated persons, and persons with
repeat infections, the state of prevention technology: condoms,
vaccines, the Internet, ethical, economic, and policy issues in STD
prevention, applying intervention models to real-world situations,
guidelines for program evaluation and improvement.
As STDs and AIDS remain top priorities for public health and
private sector practitioners, researchers, and educators,
Behavioral Interventions for Prevention and Control of Sexually
Transmitted Diseases gives a long-neglected field the attention it
deserves. This authoritative resource is sure to influence public

The first decade of the new Scottish Parliament has seen the
emergence of a new-found national confidence. 'Scottishness' is
clearly alive and flourishing. This book offers new and detailed
insights into Scottish language and its usage by the Scottish
press. To what extent does the use of identifiably Scottish lexical
features help them to maintain their distinctive Scottish identity
and appeal to their readership? Which Scottish words and phrases do
the papers use and where, is it a symbolic gesture, do they all
behave in the same way, and has this changed since devolution?
Combining analysis of broad trends with detailed discussion of
individual Scottish words and phrases, its timely publication
coincides with a period when interest in things Scottish is at an
all time high.
THIS BOOK OFFERS YOU "OUT OF THE BOX" CONCEPTS WITH MONEY Money
Isn't The Problem, You Are is written for people who live in a
constant state of difficulty around money, whether it's spending
too much, not having enough, or having too much. In Money Isn't The
Problem, You Are, Gary Douglas and Dain Heer share processes,
tools, and points of view that you can use to change the way money
flows into your life. Gary and Dain have worked with lots of people
regarding money issues. Through innovative tools, Douglas and Heer
have helped those who had $10 in their pocket and people who had
ten million. The interesting thing is they all have the same issue
it has nothing to do with money. It has to do with what they are
unwilling to receive. What you are unwilling to receive creates the
limitation of what you can have. Change THAT and money isn't an
issue any more LEARNING TO RECEIVE IS THE GREATEST THING YOU CAN DO
Money Isn't The Problem, You Are is based on the very popular
Access Money Seminar, which has been taught in cities throughout
the U.S., Costa Rica, Australia and New Zealand. "It's not about
money. It never is. It's about what you're willing to receive. The
Universe is endlessly abundant. Learn to make different choices
with the empowering tools in this book. You CAN create a different
reality." -Gary Douglas, found of Access Consciousness(r)
These are the Ten Keys to Total Freedom. They are a way of living
that will help you expand your capacity for consciousness so that
you can have greater awareness about yourself, your life, this
reality and beyond. With greater awareness you can begin creating
the life you've always known was possible but haven't yet achieved.
If you will actually do and be these things, you will get free in
every aspect of your life. People have used these Ten Keys to get
over depression, lack of money, relationship issues, body problems
and many other situations that have seemed insurmountable. Gary
Douglas & Dr. Dain Heer explored the Ten Keys to Total Freedom
in detail on a series of telecalls and conversations over a period
of ten weeks with Access Consciousness Facilitators and other
people from all over the world. This book is based on these main
principles of Access Consciousness that have changed, and continue
to improve, people's lives worldwide.

Innovations in Child and Family Policy tackles many of the common
problems and challenges that are considered to be at the heart of
child and family policy: family creation, economic support,
childrearing, and family care-giving. Innovations begins by
defining child and family policy and discussing the history of this
growing specialization within the social sciences. The main
chapters of Innovations address policy and programmatic solutions
to problems that face families by topic area: (1) early childhood
and education, (2) government interventions with family violence,
children's welfare, and the justice system, and (3) supports for
children and families. Specifically, the chapters in Innovations
address the availability of child care, family medical leave,
special needs children, parent involvement in their children's
education, preventing and addressing child abuse and neglect,
children who witness partner violence, child support orders,
children of incarcerated fathers, and young adults in the justice
system. What makes this book unique is that it contains applied
research from many program evaluations or assessments of existing
state-level legislation. Social scientists from multiple
disciplines examine the efficacy such programs and policies to make
recommendations for expanded or new child and family policies. For
our novice and/or student readers, we hope that Innovations will
help them to develop a greater sense of what academics,
professionals, and politicians mean when they speak of "child and
family policy" and also an appreciation for how social science
research can contribute to policy-making to support children and
families. For our more advanced readers, we hope that these
chapters make a significant contribution to the conversations
regarding how multidisciplinary social science research can inform
policy recommendations. For all of our readers, we hope that the
use-inspired research presented in Innovations will help to
strengthen and support the we
