George M Hall
R2,698 Discovery Miles 26 980 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Automation now supplants economic activity more than it supports it. Furthermore, this process is fueled by enormous economic forces, which intensifies dependence on automation and spawns other sociological consequences. Of these consequences, fraud generates the highest immediate losses, amounting to $300 billion annually. In the long run, however, the greatest economic cost will occur through loss of jobs, and a lowering of net skills for most of the balance. Other consequences include pervasive invasion of privacy, and overdependence on technology at the expense of developing critical reasoning, judgement, and a personal sense of responsibility. Fortunately, many of these consequences could be ameliorated by automated countermeasures that offset the excesses. Unfortunately, it usually takes a crisis to institute fundamental reform, though the looming economic meltdown stemming from the mounting federal debt offers just such an opportunity.

Philosophy Imprisoned - The Love of Wisdom in the Age of Mass Incarceration (Hardcover): Sarah Tyson, Joshua M. Hall Philosophy Imprisoned - The Love of Wisdom in the Age of Mass Incarceration (Hardcover)
Sarah Tyson, Joshua M. Hall; Contributions by Eric Anthamatten, Anders "Andy" Benander, Natalie Cisneros, …
R2,935 Discovery Miles 29 350 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Western philosophy's relationship with prisons stretches from Plato's own incarceration to the modern era of mass incarceration. Philosophy Imprisoned: The Love of Wisdom in the Age of Mass Incarceration draws together a broad range of philosophical thinkers, from both inside and outside prison walls, in the United States and beyond, who draw on a variety of critical perspectives (including phenomenology, deconstruction, and feminist theory) and historical and contemporary figures in philosophy (including Kant, Hegel, Foucault, and Angela Davis) to think about prisons in this new historical era. All of these contributors have experiences within prison walls: some are or have been incarcerated, some have taught or are teaching in prisons, and all have been students of both philosophy and the carceral system. The powerful testimonials and theoretical arguments are appropriate reading not only for philosophers and prison theorists generally, but also for prison reformers and abolitionists.

Fish Processing Technology (Hardcover, 2nd ed. 1997): George M Hall Fish Processing Technology (Hardcover, 2nd ed. 1997)
George M Hall
R6,566 Discovery Miles 65 660 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

As with the first edition this book includes chapters on established fish processes and new processes and allied issues. The first five chapters cover fish biochemistry affecting processing, curing, surimi and fish mince, chilling and freezing and canning. These established processes can still show innovations and improved theory although their mature status precludes major leaps in knowledge and technology. The four chapters concerned with new areas relevant to fish processing are directed at the increasing globalisation of the fish processing industry and the demands, from legislation and the consumer, for better quality, safer products. One chapter reviews the methods available to identify fish species in raw and processed products. The increased demand for fish products and the reduced catch of commercially-important species has lead to adulteration or substitu tion of these species with cheaper species. The ability to detect these practices has been based on some elegant analytical techniques in electrophoresis."

M. Hall, P. Jackson
R3,282 Discovery Miles 32 820 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

As a way of improvising on the study of civilizations in world politics, the volume focuses on those social and political "practices "through which notions of civilizational identity are reproduced in a variety of contexts ranging from the global credit regime to theological debates about modernity to the 'war on terrorism'. The contributors to the volume explore the ways in which practices of civilizational identity give rise to the "effect "of a solid object called a 'civilization, ' even though this object is itself nothing more than an ensemble of social practices.

Financial Deregulation - A Comparative Study of Australia and the United Kingdom (Hardcover): M. Hall Financial Deregulation - A Comparative Study of Australia and the United Kingdom (Hardcover)
M. Hall
R4,225 Discovery Miles 42 250 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The process of financial deregulation, and especially the dismantling of direct monetary controls, has been underway for some time now in many financially-developed economies, but little attention has been devoted to analysis of the issues involved in the academic literature. This book represents an attempt to remedy that deficiency providing, as it does, a detailed analysis of the programmes of financial deregulation pursued in the United Kingdom and Australia since 1970 and an assessment of the implications for monetary and prudential policy.

Methods of Testing Protein Functionality (Hardcover, 1996 ed.): George M Hall Methods of Testing Protein Functionality (Hardcover, 1996 ed.)
George M Hall
R2,949 Discovery Miles 29 490 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Protein functionality is big business in the food industry, both academic and commercial. This reflects the fascination of protein chemistry and the commercial value of proteins in giving texture and substance to foods. My first encounter with the subject came about through an interest in assessing the extent of thermal damage in spray-dried proteins. A change in functional properties seemed a useful guide to the thermal damage. I found the literature replete with methods (and theory) and so did what everybody else seemed to do - I devised my own methods which were slight variations on the general theme. However, being an analyst at heart I thought there must be a systematic approach to the various tests available. This book is an attempt to assess the practice of protein functionality testing, keeping theory to a minimum, followed by a suggested 'standard' method or protocol to follow. Each chapter is devoted to a single functional property and the reader will see that attempts to 'standardise' them have had varied success, perhaps reflecting the complexity of the mechanisms at work. As mentioned above theory has been kept to a minimum but hopefully it supports the practical methodology described. I hope that the book stimulates debate on the subject; it is certainly not the last word! G. H. Contributors Dr G. E. A little boy has been very naughty. After he is caught throwing a stone at a camel, the shepherd's son runs into the innkeeper's stable and falls crying into the straw. But when he hears the footsteps of the innkeeper approaching, the boy hides behind a mound of hay.

The innkeeper leads a man and his pregnant wife into the stable and leaves the couple alone-or so he thinks. But it is not long before the man and woman discover the boy and coax him out of hiding. Filled with regret, the boy runs straight into the arms of Mary, mother of Jesus, who quietly comforts him as Joseph looks on. As the boy sets out to find his shepherd father, a savior is born.

The Shepherd's Son is the beautifully illustrated tale of a frightened little boy who is led by fate and divine direction to find Mary, Joseph, the baby Jesus, and forgiveness.

Beyond No Future - Cultures of German Punk (Hardcover, Hardback): Mirko M. Hall, Seth Howes, Cyrus M. Shahan Beyond No Future - Cultures of German Punk (Hardcover, Hardback)
Mirko M. Hall, Seth Howes, Cyrus M. Shahan
R3,935 Discovery Miles 39 350 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The first book of its kind in English, Beyond No Future: Cultures of German Punk explores the texts and contexts of German punk cultures. Notwithstanding its "no future" sloganeering, punk has had a rich and complex life in German art and letters, in German urban landscapes, and in German youth culture. Beyond No Future collects innovative, methodologically diverse scholarly contributions on the life and legacy of these cultures. Focusing on punk politics and aesthetics in order to ask broader questions about German nationhood(s) in a period of rapid transition, this text offers a unique view of the decade bookended by the "German Autumn" and German unification. Consulting sources both published and unpublished, aesthetic and archival, Beyond No Future's contributors examine German punk's representational strategies, anti-historical consciousness, and refusal of programmatic intervention into contemporary political debates. Taken together, these essays demonstrate the importance of punk culture to historical, political, economic, and cultural developments taking place both in Germany and on a broader transnational scale.

The Entangled Labor Histories of Brazil and the United States (Hardcover): Fernando Teixeira Da Silva, Alexandre Fortes, Thomas... The Entangled Labor Histories of Brazil and the United States (Hardcover)
Fernando Teixeira Da Silva, Alexandre Fortes, Thomas D. Rogers, Gillian McGillivray; Contributions by Larissa Rosa Correa, …
R2,218 Discovery Miles 22 180 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Workers in Brazil and the United States have followed parallel and entangled histories for many centuries. Recent experiences with progressive, popular presidents and authoritarian, populist presidents in the two most populous countries in the hemisphere have underscored important similarities. The contributors in this volume focus on the comparative and transnational histories of labor between and across Brazil and the United States. The countries' histories bear the marks of slavery, racism, transoceanic immigration, and rapid urbanization, as well as strong regional differentiation and inequalities. These features decisively shaped the working classes. Brazilian and US labor history debates have erupted and subsided at different times. This collection synthesizes those debates while adding new topics and new sources from both countries. The international group of historians' methodologically innovative chapters explore links, resonances, and divergences between US and Brazilian labor history. They widen the scope of analysis for themes and problems that have long been familiar to historians of work and workers in the two countries, but have not provoked close dialogues between scholars in the respective places. Though the histories themselves were often entangled, the debates about them have too rarely intertwined.
