From pillar of stability to rogue state, Iran's politics have been
a centre of world attention and concern. With a glorious history as
an empire, ethnically diverse population, and youthful inhabitants,
the country has and will continue to play a critical role as a
pivotal state in the Middle East, Central Asia and the Caucasus.
Oil wealth mixes with extensive poverty to explain the strength of
the state and the potential for unrest in a country that
experienced two revolutions in the twentieth century. Exploring
continuities and changes, this book provides the historical
backdrop crucial to understanding how Iranian pride and sense of
victimization combine to make its politics contentious and
potentially dangerous. From the struggle between the Shah and
Ayatollah Khomeini to the current tension between the reformers and
traditionalists, a central issue in Iranian domestic politics has
long been its place in the world and relations with the West.
This ground-breaking volume explores the terrain of friendship
against the historical backdrop of early modern Europe. In these
thought-provoking essays the terms of friendship are explored -
from the most intimate and erotically charged to the reciprocities
of village life. This is a rich offering in social and cultural
history that is attuned to the pervasive language of religion. A
hidden history is revealed - of friendships that we have lost, and
of friendships starkly, and movingly, familiar.
Public Administration Evolving: From Foundations to the Future
demonstrates how the theory and practice of public administration
has evolved since the early decades of the twentieth century. Each
chapter approaches the field from a unique perspective and
describes the seminal events that have been influential in shaping
its evolution. This book presents major trends in theory and
practice in the field, provides an overview of its intellectual
development, and demonstrates how it has professionalized. The
range from modernism to metamodernism is reflected from the
perspective of accomplished scholars in the field, each of whom
captures the history, environment, and development of a particular
dimension of public administration. Taken together, the chapters
leave us with an understanding of where we are today and a
grounding for forecasting the future.

While the historic roots of clinical chemistry originate from the
chemical sciences the growth of the subject has been dependent upon
the poli tical, social, economic and technologic national soil in
which it has developed. Thus the present leaders in this field have
backgrounds variously in chemistry, medicine, pharmacy or sometimes
biology. Today, clinical chemistry has attained stature as a
unified independent discipline. It is characterized by active and
productive international and national societies; its function
codified in the law of many countries; its scientific content the
sole subject of international and national journals as well as
textbooks and educational programs; and its inter national,
regional and national meetings have become focal points for major
exchange of scientific, clinical and technical information and
exhibition. The positive impact of the discipline upon the delivery
of health care has given it a significant position in the economics
of public health. As a consequence it has become the most
rapidly-growing segment of the industrial and commercial component
of health main tenance. These changes have brought the need to
define the educational and training processes to prepare future
leaders of clinical chemistry. The diverse backgrounds of the
present directors of clinical chemicallabora tories has required
that the viewpoints of chemists, pharmacists, physicians and
biologists be brought into harmony. This has been achieved by the
years of discussion, debate and review by colleagues of varied
professional backgrounds. This monograph reflects their consensus
viewpoint for the practice of clinical chemistry at its most
advanced level."
Expanding and building on the measures included in the original
1994 volume, Communication Research Measures II: A Sourcebook
provides new measures in mass, interpersonal, instructional, and
group/organizational communication areas, and highlights work in
newer subdisciplines in communication, including intercultural,
family, and health. It also includes measures from outside the
communication discipline that have been employed in communication
research.
The measures profiled here are "the best of the best" from the
early 1990s through today. They are models for future scale
development as well as tools for the trade, and they constitute the
main tools that researchers can use for self-administered
measurement of people's attitudes, conceptions of themselves, and
perceptions of others. The focus is on up-to-date measures and the
most recent scales and indexes used to assess communication
variables.
Providing suggestions for measurement of concepts of interest to
researchers; inspiring students to consider research directions not
considered previously; and supplying models for scale developers to
follow in terms of the work necessary to produce a valid and
reliable measurement instrument in the discipline, the authors of
this key resource have developed a significant contribution toward
improving measurement and providing measures for better
science.
