Unlike some other reproductions of classic texts (1) We have not
used OCR(Optical Character Recognition), as this leads to bad
quality books with introduced typos. (2) In books where there are
images such as portraits, maps, sketches etc We have endeavoured to
keep the quality of these images, so they represent accurately the
original artefact. Although occasionally there may be certain
imperfections with these old texts, we feel they deserve to be made
available for future generations to enjoy.
How would you greet a man from another planet? With scientists
declaring that manned rockets may, perhaps in the next ten years,
be shot to the moon, isn't it just as possible that some being from
a far-off planet might pay us earth creatures a visit-tomorrow,
next week-at any time? In Harold M. Sherman's exciting story, THE
GREEN MAN, you get an advance idea of how the great men and women
of this earth-how you, yourself, would react, when a CREATURE from
ANOTHER WORLD arrives. Numar, THE GREEN MAN pays us a visit,
traveling over a trillion miles from his planet, Talamaya, via
space ship, to land on our world. This is quite possible the most
amazing story you have ever read-more amazing still when you
consider that it COULD happen!
The first bacterial genome, Haemophilus influenzae, was completely
sequenced, annotated, and published in 1995. Today, more than 200
prokaryotic (archaeal and bacterial) genomes have been completed
and over 500 prokaryotic genomes are in va- ous stages of
completion. Seventeen eukaryotic genomes plus four eukaryotic chro-
somes have been completed. The concept of achieving better
understanding of an organism through knowledge of the complete
genomic sequence was first demonstrated in 1978 when the first
bacteriophage genome, X174, was sequenced. Complete genomic
sequences of prokaryotes have led to a better understanding of the
biology and evolution of the microbes, and, for pathogens,
facilitated identification of new vaccine candidates, putative
virulence genes, targets for antibiotics, new strategy for rapid
diagnosis, and investigation of bacteria-host interactions and
disease mec- nisms. Recent increased interest in microbial
pathogens and infectious diseases is largely attributed to the
re-emergence of infectious diseases like tuberculosis, emergence of
new infectious diseases like AIDS and severe acute respiratory
syndrome, the problem of an increasing rate of emergence of
antibiotic-resistant variants of pathogens, and the fear of
bioterrorism. Microbes are highly diverse and abundant in the
biosphere. Less than 1% of these morphologically identified
microbes can be cultured in vitro using standard techniques and
conditions. With such abundance of microbes in nature, we can
expect to see new variants and new species evolve and a small
number will emerge as pathogens to humans.
We are proud to present a story you've been waiting for with bated
breath, Harold M. Sherman's sequel to "The Green Man"! How's that
for a cliche? Well, cliche or not, "The Green Man Returns" is one
of the most powerful and significant stories we have ever run. It
isn't just a fiction story intended for entertainment-it's a
warning to the world that things have got to change, or somebody
may change them for us. Who? Well, the green man, for instance.
Somebody like him can exist as well as not! Anyway, we want to
recommend "The Green Man Returns' as a must on your reading list,
and we feel that when you've finished it, you'll feel a great big
lump in your throat-and you won't be ashamed to admit it's from
emotion.
Will war in the Middle East be fanned or quenched by water? This is
the central question addressed by this book. It is a question that
is becoming increasing pressing especially in the climatically
parched and political volatile realities of the region. Indeed,
leaders across the Middle East including those considered to be
among the most moderate have warned that water, more than any other
issue, is liable to drive their countries to war. The book provides
analyses of Israel's water predicament and of the hydro-political
implications for the country, particularly in the light of recent
developments in the "peace process".

Pediatric Forensic Neuropsychology is the definitive reference on
the practice and process of civil forensic neuropsychological
assessment of children and adolescents. An elite, knowledgeable,
and expert group of authors were assembled in order to produce the
first text dedicated specifically to pediatric forensic
neuropsychology. This volume covers core topics pertaining to
forensic neuropsychological assessments of children and
adolescents, such as the role of pediatric neuropsychology in the
courtroom, ethical issues, and practical issues in private forensic
practice. Other chapters discuss the foundations of pediatric
neuropsychological assessment, and include discussion of
neuropsychological test selection, base rates, interpreting change,
and sub-optimal performance. In addition, the text covers forensic
evaluations of specific pediatric populations including those
suffering postconcussion syndrome and mild traumatic brain injury,
moderate to severe traumatic brain injury, and medical malpractice
cases, as well as the independent educational evaluation. Further
chapters discuss premorbid and post-injury factors, and conditions
important in the forensic neuropsychological evaluation of children
including moderator variables and diversity, psychological and
psychiatric conditions, and ADHD and LD. The book is intended
primarily for neuropsychologists who engage in forensic work.
Although the topics will be of most interest to those who assess
children and adolescents, the topics will also be of interest to
neuropsychologists who conduct forensic evaluations with adults.
The text will also be useful for attorneys, and medical
professionals involved in forensic evaluations, such as clinical
psychologists, psychiatrists, neurologists, and physiatrists.
The best new research on medieval clothing and textiles, drawing
from a range of disciplines and with a special focus on
reconstruction. The fourth volume of this landmark series features
a special focus on headdress, with papers analysing women's turbans
in fifteenth-century French manuscript paintings; the changing
meaning of the term cuff; the spread of wimple from England to
Southern Italy; and a surviving embroidered linen cap attributed to
Saint Birgitta of Sweden. Northern European dress and textiles are
further explored in papers on archaeological textiles from medieval
towns in Finland, Norway, and Sweden; the construction of gowns
excavated at Herjolfsnes, Greenland; and references to scarlet
clothing in Icelandic sagas. Other papers focus on linen production
in medieval Russia and an enigmatic quilt of Henry VIII's that
almost certainly arrived in England as part of the dowry of
Catherine of Aragon. Also included are reviews of recent books on
clothing and textiles. ROBIN NETHERTON is a professional editor and
a researcher/lecturer on the interpretation of medieval European
dress; GALE R. OWEN-CROCKER is Professor of Anglo-Saxon Culture at
the University of Manchester. Contributors: MARK CHAMBERS, CAMILLA

In the spatial or spatio-temporal context, specifying the correct
covariance function is fundamental to obtain efficient predictions,
and to understand the underlying physical process of interest. This
book focuses on covariance and variogram functions, their role in
prediction, and appropriate choice of these functions in
applications. Both recent and more established methods are
illustrated to assess many common assumptions on these functions,
such as, isotropy, separability, symmetry, and intrinsic
correlation. After an extensive introduction to spatial
methodology, the book details the effects of common covariance
assumptions and addresses methods to assess the appropriateness of
such assumptions for various data structures. Key features: * An
extensive introduction to spatial methodology including a survey of
spatial covariance functions and their use in spatial prediction
(kriging) is given. * Explores methodology for assessing the
appropriateness of assumptions on covariance functions in the
spatial, spatio-temporal, multivariate spatial, and point pattern
settings. * Provides illustrations of all methods based on data and
simulation experiments to demonstrate all methodology and guide to
proper usage of all methods. * Presents a brief survey of spatial
and spatio-temporal models, highlighting the Gaussian case and the
binary data setting, along with the different methodologies for
estimation and model fitting for these two data structures. *
Discusses models that allow for anisotropic and nonseparable
behaviour in covariance functions in the spatial, spatio-temporal
and multivariate settings. * Gives an introduction to point pattern
models, including testing for randomness, and fitting regular and
clustered point patterns. The importance and assessment of isotropy
of point patterns is detailed. Statisticians, researchers, and data
analysts working with spatial and space-time data will benefit from
this book as well as will graduate students with a background in
basic statistics following courses in engineering, quantitative
ecology or atmospheric science.
In 1940 three English children are evacuated from London, only to
discover the lady they're staying with (Angela Lansbury) is a witch
- but a good one. With the aid of her spells and a magic bed, the
children visit an undersea kingdom, witness a football match played
by teams of wild cartoon animals, and successfully thwart a Nazi
invasion of Britain. Live action and animation are combined in this
Oscar-winning Disney film, which also features the songs
'Portobello Road' (as performed by the spiv Bruce Forsyth) and 'The
Beautiful Briny Sea'.
