Despite the dramatic circumstances of its founding, Israel did not
inspire sustained, impassioned public discussion among Jews and
non-Jews in the United States until Leon Uris's popular novel
Exodus was released in 1958. Uris's novel popularized the
complicated story of Israel's founding and, in the process, boosted
the morale of post-Holocaust Jewry and disseminated in popular
culture positive images of Jewish heroism. Our Exodus: Leon Uris
and the Americanization of Israel's Founding Story examines the
phenomenon of Exodus and its largely unrecognized influence on
post-World War II understandings of Israel's beginnings in America
and around the world. Author M. M. Silver's extensive archival
research helps clarify the relevance of Uris's own biography in the
creation of Exodus. He situates the novel's enormous popularity in
the context of postwar America, and particularly Jewish American
culture of the 1950s and early 1960s. In telling the story of the
making of and the response to Exodus, first as a book and then as a
film, Silver shows how the representation of historical events in
Exodus reflected needs, expectations, and aspirations of Jewish
identity and culture in the post-Holocaust world. He argues that
while Uris's novel simplified some facts and distorted others, it
provided an astonishingly ample amount of information about Jewish
history and popularized a persuasive and cogent (though debatable)
Zionist interpretation of modern Jewish history. Silver also argues
that Exodus is at the core of an evolving argument about the
essential compatibility between the Jewish state and American
democracy that continues to this day. Readers interested in Israel
studies, Jewish history, and American popular culture will
appreciate Silver's unique analysis.
This is the first textbook designed to teach statistics to students
in aviation courses. All examples and exercises are grounded in an
aviation context, including flight instruction, air traffic
control, airport management, and human factors. Structured in six
parts, theiscovers the key foundational topics relative to
descriptive and inferential statistics, including hypothesis
testing, confidence intervals, z and t tests, correlation,
regression, ANOVA, and chi-square. In addition, this book promotes
both procedural knowledge and conceptual understanding. Detailed,
guided examples are presented from the perspective of conducting a
research study. Each analysis technique is clearly explained,
enabling readers to understand, carry out, and report results
correctly. Students are further supported by a range of pedagogical
features in each chapter, including objectives, a summary, and a
vocabulary check. Digital supplements comprise downloadable data
sets and short video lectures explaining key concepts. Instructors
also have access to PPT slides and an instructor’s manual that
consists of a test bank with multiple choice exams, exercises with
data sets, and solutions. This is the ideal statistics textbook for
aviation courses globally, especially in aviation statistics,
research methods in aviation, human factors, and related areas.
Ronen Avraham, David Hyman and Charles Silver, leading authorities
in their fields, discuss the effects of economic and legal
constraints and regulation on healthcare. They examine the impact
of access to healthcare on mortality and clinical outcomes and
investigate healthcare financing, including payment to providers,
expanding costs, health insurance and the provision of long-term
care. The distribution of spending and the expansion of provision
are also investigated. The regulatory aspect includes discussions
on the regulation of healthcare practice, medical malpractice and
liability, and public health and ethical issues.
5 by predations of the sea peoples. However, the weakening of
Mycenean seapower, the destruction of the Hittite kingdom, and
finally, the limitation on Philistine strength resulting from the
alliance between David and the king of Tyre in the eleventh
century, combined to open up "for the Phoenicians, in the first
quarter of the first millennium B. C. E. vast overseas trading
areas" (Oded 1979a, p. 228). By the end of the eleventh century,
pottery from Cyprus, after a long absence could once again be found
in Israelite-occupied sites (Albright 1960, p. 47). The expansion
of the sea trade in the Mediterranean in which, judging by the song
of Deborah (Judg. 5), the northern tribes of Asher and Dan (?) (see
figure 1-2) would have parti cipated, was accompanied by the
inauguration of camel caravans trans porting the goods of southern
Arabia to and through Israel (see Bulliet 1975, especially p. 36).
Military victories over the Philistines and Syrians, receipts of
tribute, and the collection of tolls from the control of trade
routes together with the general revival of trade all contributed
to Israel's growing wealth. Indeed, the David-Solomon period (most
of the tenth century) is often portrayed as the peak of Israelite
economic development. In fact there is precious little extra
biblical evidence supporting this portrayal. For example, in spite
of the reported activity of David and Solomon's scribes, only one
example of 6 "Hebrew" writing from this period, the Gezer Calendar,
has been found."
Tracing the evolution of the Tanzanian manufacturing industry since
the beginning of colonial rule, this book focuses on the period
since independence and especially on the effects of socialist
policies resulting from the 1967 Arusha Declaration. Dr. Silver
develops volume indices of production for Tanzanian industry as a
whole and for individual sectors. He also examines in detail
changes in labor productivity, earnings, unit labor costs,
investments, and the prices of manufactured goods, paying special
attention to the role of government-controlled parastatals, the
regional distribution of manufacturing industries, and income
inequality. The rapid growth in production and employment and the
changing structure of the manufacturing industry, he concludes, is
due to high rates of investment in a small number of relatively
large establishments, primarily in the parastatal sector.

Mouse Genetics offers for the first time in a single comprehensive volume a practical guide to mouse breeding and genetics. Nearly all human genes are present in the mouse genome, making it an ideal organism for genetic analyses of both normal and abnormal aspects of human biology. Written as a convenient reference, this book provides a complete description of the laboratory mouse, the tools used in analysis, and procedures for carrying out genetic studies, along with background material and statistical information for use in ongoing data analysis. It thus serves two purposes, first to provide students with an introduction to the mouse as a model system for genetic analysis, and to give practicing scientists a detailed guide for performing breeding studies and interepreting experimental results. All topics are developed completely, with full explanations of critical concepts in genetics and molecular biology. As investigators around the world are rediscovering both the heuristic and practical value of the mouse genome, the demand for a succinct introduction to the subject has never been greater. Mouse Genetics is intended to meet the needs of this wide audience.

As politicians debate how to address the estimated eleven million
unauthorized immigrants residing in the United States, undocumented
youth anxiously await the next policy shift that will determine
their futures. From one day to the next, their dreams are as likely
to crumble around them as to come within reach. In Shifting
Boundaries, Alexis M. Silver sheds light on the currents of
exclusion and incorporation that characterize their lives. Silver
examines the experiences of immigrant youth growing up in a small
town in North Carolina—a state that experienced unprecedented
growth in its Latino population in the 1990s and 2000s, and where
aggressive anti-immigration policies have been enforced. Drawing on
ethnographic fieldwork and in-depth interview data, she finds that
contradictory policies at the national, state, and local levels
interact to create a complex environment through which the youth
must navigate. From heritage-based school programs to state-wide
bans on attending community college; from the failure of the DREAM
Act to the rescinding of Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals
(DACA); each layer represents profound implications for
undocumented Latino youth. Silver exposes the constantly changing
pathways that shape their journeys into early adulthood—and the
profound resilience that they develop along the way.

We seem to be witnessing the rebirth of the concept of an
integrated social science, a complete theory of human action and
interaction in all its ramifica tions and complications. What we
call society is simply the totality of human exchange. Economics is
a theory of human exchange of certain types. Although the qualities
of what is being exchanged as well as the conditions of exchange
may vary, economic theory has recently broadened its scope
sufficiently to begin to be general enough to handle these problems
as well. In the present work we attempt to see what insights are
revealed by the application of economic categories to political
history. We feel there are many. At this point Silver stops. !
Auster continues. A quick spin around the "policy" block in the new
model so to speak, hence Chapter 8. For the rest, however, this is
truly a joint work. The authors' names appear in alphabetical
order. After 12 years of professional asso ciation, claims to
precedence in origination could too clearly be self-deception. !
Silver is even more pessimistic than Auster, in particular about
which types of reforms will be accepted. With the rise to affluence
of most members of our society the mass itself has become concerned
with political reform as almost a new form of entertainment. Unfor
tunately, they have no idea how to improve matters.

Concerns computer-based information systems that can affect the
decision making behavior of their users. It tells the reader how to
describe these systems and how to differentiate one from the other.
Its main features are: a broad definition of Decision Support
Systems (DSS), a process view of decision making, which leads to
viewing DSS as interventions into the processes through which
decisions are made, and a descriptive rather than a prescriptive
approach.

Despite the increased public awareness of traumatic brain injury
(TBI), the complexities of the neuropsychiatric,
neuropsychological, neurological, and other physical consequences
of TBI of all severities across the lifespan remain incompletely
understood by patients, their families, healthcare providers, and
the media. Keeping pace with advances in the diagnosis, treatment,
and science of TBI, the Textbook of Traumatic Brain Injury, Third
Edition, comprehensively fills this gap in knowledge. Nearly all 50
chapters feature new authors, all of them experts in their field.
Chapters new to this edition include biomechanical forces,
biomarkers, neurodegenerative dementias, suicide, endocrine
disorders, chronic disease management, and social cognition. An
entirely new section is devoted to the evaluation and treatment of
mild TBI, including injuries in athletes, military service members
and veterans, and children and adolescents. These chapters join
newly updated sections on the assessment and treatment of the
cognitive, emotional, behavioral, and other physical sequelae of
TBI. The Textbook of Traumatic Brain Injury is a must-read for all
of those working in any of the multitude of disciplines that
contribute to the care and rehabilitation of persons with brain
injury. This new volume is also a potentially useful reference for
policymakers in both the public and private sectors.
