Extraordinary men and women-we see them in our communities every
day. They impact countless lives, they uplift and they inspire. But
where did their inspiration come from? How did they become
extraordinary? Through the personal stories of twenty men and
women, Dare To Be Extraordinary: A Collection of Life Lessons From
African American Fathers breathes life into one of today's most
compelling familial and social issues: fatherhood in the African
American community. In-depth discourse allows business leaders,
cultural icons, athletes, politicians, activists, doctors,
newsmakers, and some of the best and brightest minds of our time,
the chance to share-with honesty, wit and intellect-lessons learned
from their fathers. Dare To Be Extraordinary recognizes and honors
the wisdom and teachings of African American fathers passed down to
both sons and daughters who took those lessons to heart and have
led extraordinary lives.
The old ship, Glory Tide, sails from San Francisco to a less than
civilized lumber-camp in the Alaskan Territory. Among the cargo,
smuggled whisky With the help from a weather-worn captain and an
English gentleman, a keen thinking entrepreneur embarks on a scheme
to bring whisky to the northern region. In doing so, he sets in
motion a collective chaos that unravels the delicate, social
structure and, ultimately, binds the fortunes of all to a sacred,
spruce tree. Shanghaied drunkards, professional gamblers, rogue
indians, and a mythological beast, all combine to bring about this
deadly, and oftentimes comical, adventure.
Social Inequalities, Media, and Communication: Theory and Roots
provides a global analysis of the intersection of social
inequalities, media, and communication. This book contains chapter
contributions written by scholars from around the world who engage
in country- and region-specific case studies of social inequalities
in media and communication. The volume is a theoretical exploration
of the classical, structuralist, culturalist, postmodernist, and
postcolonial theoretical approaches to inequality and how these
theoretical discourses provide critical understanding of social
inequalities in relation to narratives shaped by media and
communication experiences. The contributors provide class and
gender analyses of media and culture, engage theoretical discourses
of inequalities and capitalism in relation to communication
technologies, and explore the cyclical relationship of theory and
praxis in studying inequalities, media, and communication.
Advanced Topics in Global Information Management is a series of
books on advance topics in global information management (GIM). GIM
research continues to progress, with some scholars pushing the
boundaries of thinking and others challenging the status quo.
Advanced Topics in Global Information Management, Volume 4 is a
part of this series. In order to sustain any competitive advantage
gained through the application of information technology, companies
must continually seek improvement. They must employ environmental
scanning techniques to determine what technology is available, be
willing to adopt new information technology, and know what the
competition is planning or doing. Advanced Topics in Global
Information Management, Volume 4 addresses these important issues.
This is an important reference for anyone interested in
exploring or managing the physiological and ecological processes
which underlie resource allocation and plant growth in agroforestry
systems. The book highlights how recent developments in
agroforestry research can contribute to understanding agroforestry
system function, and discusses the potential application of
agroforestry in addressing a range of land use challenges in both
tropical and temperate regions of the world.
As a result of the advancements in algorithms and the huge increase
in speed of computers over the past decade, electronic structure
calculations have evolved into a valuable tool for characterizing
surface species and for elucidating the pathways for their
formation and reactivity. It is also now possible to calculate,
including electric field effects, STM images for surface
structures. To date the calculation of such images has been
dominated by density functional methods, primarily because the
computational cost of - curate wave-function based calculations
using either realistic cluster or slab models would be prohibitive.
DFT calculations have proven especially valuable for elucidating
chemical processes on silicon and other semiconductor surfaces.
However, it is also clear that some of the systems to which DFT
methods have been applied have large non-dynamical correlation
effects, which may not be properly handled by the current
generation of Kohn-Sham-based density functionals. For example, our
CASSCF calculations on the Si(001)/acetylene system reveal that at
some geometries there is extensive 86 configuration mixing. This,
in turn, could signal problems for DFT cal- lations on these
systems. Some of these problem systems can be addressed using ONIOM
or other "layering" methods, treating the primary region of
interest with a CASMP2 or other multireference-based method, and
treating the secondary region by a lower level of electronic
structure theory or by use of a molecular mechanics method.

Advanced Topics in Global Information Management is a series of
books that examine global information management (GIM), and its
research and implications. GIM research continues to progress, with
some scholars pushing the boundaries of thinking and others
challenging the status quo. ""Advanced Topics in Global Information
Management, Volume 5"" is a part of this series. ""Advanced Topics
in Global Information Management, Volume 5"" discusses how many
businesses exist in a global environment. Whether they are large or
small companies, they may have suppliers or customers that reside
in different geographical locations. The ability to function in
this global environment has been facilitated by the use of
information technology. Through research projects, this book
addresses the ability of both large and small business, and
government, from the national level to local level, to function in
altered environments by using information technology. In all of
these situations, both businesses and governments must be able to
function and respond to various stakeholders by adopting the
appropriate, and necessary, cultural perspective.
The most comprehensive reference work in its field, this book
covers a broad range of topics--military, political, economic,
social, painting, literature, music, cinema, dance, theater,
sports, and daily life--related to France and her empire during
World War II. Starting with the 1938 Munich Crisis and continuing
through the 1940 defeat, Occupation, Vichy, Resistance, Liberation,
and the establishment of the post-Liberation Provisional
Government, the work also addresses such legacies of the wartime
experience as the role of former President Fran DEGREESD, cois
Mitterrand and the trial of former Vichy official Maurice
Papon.
Designed to be the reference of first recourse for those
interested in World War II France, the book's focus on Occupation,
Vichy, and the French Resistance will familiarize the reader with
the most recent historical interpretations of French life during a
troubled and dramatic period. The work will also introduce the
reader to many of the controversies concerning collaboration and
resistance, which have stirred postwar French public discourse to
the present day. The book is also a bibliographic guide for those
who would like to know more about the period.
The small business is an often underestimated asset of both the
modern economy and the commercial workforce. Those employed by
small businesses make up a large percentage of both the U.S. and
Canadian populations, and with the internet and other technologies
connecting us like never before, the opportunity is present for
even the smallest company to reach a global scale. Strategic
Utilization of Information Systems in Small Business explores the
possibilities not just in expanding a business, but in assisting a
business in meeting its full potential, no matter its size.
Including a variety of perspectives on what it means to be a small
business and how to bring that business to maturity, this book is
an essential reference source for small business owners, managers,
and employees, as well as students, researchers, and aspiring
entrepreneurs. This publication features chapters on the different
aspects of management processes, e-commerce, and e-businesses,
including the characteristics of a smart entrepreneur, success vs.
failure, longevity, technology adoption, the types of different
information systems and how to implement them, data and decision
making, theories for investigating small businesses, business
strategy, and competitive advantage.
About four years ago Dr. Gilbert White visited China and sowed the
seeds of this project through conversations with Drs. Huang and
Gong of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and Mr. Long of the Yellow
River Conservancy Commission. After some additional rounds of
communications by letter, the plan for a workshop evolved and Drs.
Wolman and Brush visited with Dr. Sabadell of the Nat_ional Science
Foundation to begin the initial planning. In March 1987 Dr. Brush
visited China and the details were worked out for the October 1987
workshop. At the outset it was recognized that the 10 American
scientists and engineers ltad very Ii ttle knowledge of the Yellow
River and none had ever seen it. Therefore, it became important
that field trips be scheduled before the workshop to better set the
stage for fruitful discussions. It was also acknowledged that the
American participants could not present papers about the Yellow
River per se so their offerings reflected their general knowledge
of rivers using other rivers as examples. On the other hand the
Chinese participants were all well into the difficult problems of
harnessing the Yellow River and made their presentations
accordingly. Despite these differences the subject matter was the
unifying thread and cross communication was excellent.
Indigenous knowledge has become a catchphrase in global struggles
for environmental justice. Yet indigenous knowledges are often
viewed, incorrectly, as pure and primordial cultural artifacts.
This collection draws from African and North American cases to
argue that the forms of knowledge identified as "indigenous"
resulted from strategies to control environmental resources during
and after colonial encounters.
At times indigenous knowledges represented a "middle ground" of
intellectual exchanges between colonizers and colonized; elsewhere,
indigenous knowledges were defined through conflict and struggle.
The authors demonstrate how people claimed that their hybrid forms
of knowledge were communal, religious, and traditional, as opposed
to individualist, secular, and scientific, which they associated
with European colonialism.
"Indigenous Knowledge and the Environment" offers comparative and
transnational insights that disturb romantic views of unchanging
indigenous knowledges in harmony with the environment. The result
is a book that informs and complicates how indigenous knowledges
can and should relate to environmental policy-making.

Hazardous Air Pollutant Handbook: Measurements, Properties, and
Fate in Ambient Air provides a comprehensive review of the 188
compounds and compound classes designated as Hazardous Air
Pollutants (HAPs) by the Clean Air Act Amendments of 1990, with a
specific focus on their potential presence in ambient air. The
relevant chemical and physical properties of the compounds are
discussed and tabulated, and suitable methods for their measurement
in ambient air are identified. A survey of measurements of ambient
HAP concentrations is provided for use in historical comparisons
and for evaluating the current human health risks from these
chemicals. Finally, the book reviews the atmospheric reactions that
control the lifetime and fate of the HAPs in ambient air, and
summarizes the current knowledge about their transformation
products.
To say that children matter in Steven Spielberg's films is an
understatement. Think of the possessed Stevie in Something Evil
(TV), Baby Langston in The Sugarland Express, the alien-abducted
Barry in Close Encounters, Elliott and his unearthly alter-ego in
E.T, the war-damaged Jim in Empire of the Sun, the little girl in
the red coat in Schindler's List, the mecha child in A.I., the
kidnapped boy in Minority Report, and the eponymous boy hero of The
Adventures of Tintin. (There are many other instances across his
oeuvre). Contradicting his reputation as a purveyor of 'popcorn'
entertainment, Spielberg's vision of children/childhood is complex.
Discerning critics have begun to note its darker underpinnings,
increasingly fraught with tensions, conflicts and anxieties. But,
while childhood is Spielberg's principal source of inspiration, the
topic has never been the focus of a dedicated collection of essays.
The essays in Children in the Films of Steven Spielberg therefore
seek to address childhood in the full spectrum of Spielberg's
cinema. Fittingly, the scholars represented here draw on a range of
theoretical frameworks and disciplines-cinema studies, literary
studies, audience reception, critical race theory, psychoanalysis,
sociology, and more. This is an important book for not only
scholars but teachers and students of Spielberg's work, and for any
serious fan of the director and his career.
