In addition to the Maximum Likelihood framework, Bayesian Networks, and Hidden Markov models are also used. Three aspects are stressed: features, similarity metric, and models. Many interesting and important new results, based on research by the authors and their collaborators, are presented.

Although this book contains many new results, it is written in a style that suits both experts and novices in computer vision."

The optical spectra of molecular membrane probes can be interpreted terms of the structure, dynamics, and the physiological state of the membrane. The general picture we have of membranes and of the properties of the proteins imbedded in them, has, arguably, emerged directly from probe studies over the last 20 years. This work is designed to make these techniques accessible to a broad audience of cell biologist. The techniques discussed revolve primarily around the fluorescence of membrane probes, but applications of light absorption and Raman scattering are included. In addition to reviews of the major applications, most chapters include information on required apparatus, experimental design, data analysis, and potential pitfalls.

Mit dem vorliegenden Teilband IXj5a ist ein weiterer Beitrag zur Handbuchreihe der Roentgendiagnostik der oberen Speise- und Atemwege, der Atemorgane und des Mediastinums zum Abschluss gekommen. Die Verpflichtung der Autoren verdanken wir FRANZ STRNAD, dessen Grundkonzept von Band IXj5 der Weiterentwicklung der medizi- nischen Radiologie entsprechend etwas umgestaltet werden musste, so dass zwei Teilbande 5 a und 5 b erforderlich geworden sind. Der Abschnitt uber die "Lungentuberkulose" wurde von H. BLAHA, einem "radiologi- schen" Schuler von F. STRNAD und anerkannten Pneumologen, mit umfassender, distan- zierter Kritik und mit gutem Bildmaterial zusammengestellt. Die "Sarkoidose" haben W. SCHERMULY und H. BEHREND in gelungener Erganzung von Pathologie, Radiologie und Klinik bearbeitet und eine ausfuhrliche UEbersicht geschaffen, die noch viele Jahre un- verandert Gultigkeit behalten und als hervorragendes Nachschlagewerk dienen wird. Das von M. LOEw abgehandelte Kapitel "Die Lymphogranulomatose der Brustkorborgane" berucksichtigt den gesamten Koerperabschnitt und fasst den gegenwartigen Wissensstand sehr gut zusammen. Mit der UEbersicht "Tumoren der Brustwand" hat V. SCHNEIDER nicht nur der Radiologie, sondern auch allen Fachgebieten der Medizin, die sich mit diagnostischen Problemen des Thorax und seiner Organe befassen mussen, einen grossen Dienst erwiesen. Die topographische Betrachtungsweise aller Geschwulste und eine kritische differentialdiagnostische Wertung des Roentgenbefundes sind eine Hilfe fur die praktische klinische Arbeit. In allen Beitragen ist der gegenwartige Wissensstand der radiologischen, pathologisch-anatomischen und klinischen Kenntnisse der speziellen Erkrankungen oder Krankheitsgruppen berucksichtigt worden. Ein reiches Bildmaterial belegt anschaulich den Informationswert der radiologischen Untersuchungsmethoden, zeigt aber gleichzeitig die diagnostischen und differentialdiagnostischen Schwierigkeiten auf.
