The study of antigen presenting cells being established within the
human eye is universal knowledge, however, on going research has
shown us that antigen-presenting cells play a key role in the
protection against and the encouragement of disease within the
human eye. It has also been shown that antigen presenting cells
have a conclusive role in various ocular disorders, including but
not limited to, glaucoma, infections, inflammation, and age related
macular degeneration. With proof that interactions between T-cells
and antigen-presenting cells can result in an immunological
tolerance, future therapies are guaranteed to target antigen
presenting cells to reduce the immune tolerance to the structure of
the eye. Within this text, you will find description based
chapters, with current up to date knowledge, explaining the role of
antigen-presenting cells and each key ocular disorder relating to
them.
This well-structured and lavishly illustrated book is a
comprehensive reference on intraocular inflammation that
encompasses all anatomic forms, settings and etiologies. Individual
sections are devoted to uveitis associated with systemic disorders,
uveitis syndromes restricted to the eye, bacterial uveitis, viral
uveitis, fungal uveitis, parasitic uveitis, uveitis caused by other
microbes, traumatic uveitis, and masquerade syndromes. Chapters on
the different forms of uveitis are in a homogeneous reader-friendly
format, with identification of core messages, explanation of
etiology and pathogenesis, up-to-date information on diagnostics
and differential diagnosis and guidance on the most appropriate
forms of treatment and prognosis. Helpful flow charts are included
to assist in identification of potential underlying disorders and
the reader will also have online access to one hundred informative
case reports demonstrating the different courses of intraocular
inflammation. The authors are world experts keen to share their
vast experience with the reader. Intraocular Inflammation will be a
valuable resource for all physicians who deal with patients with
inflammatory eye disease.
Behcet's Disease (BD) is one of the most-studied systemic disorders
characterized by an occlusive vasculopathy of multiple organs. The
etiology and pathogenesis of BD are still unclear, but there is
evidence for genetic, immunologic and infectious factors in the
onset and throughout the course of the disease. Immunology of
Behcet's Disease highlights various aspects of BD. After an
epidemiological overview, the clinical presentation of ocular and
non-ocular symptoms of BD are summarized. The immunopathological
changes reflect a chronic vasculitis of arterioles, venules and
capillaries. The role of T-cells, but also of NK-T-cells, secreted
cytokines and neutrophils is covered. For years microorganisms have
been under investigation as initiating BD and, in particular,
immune reactions against various microbial heat shock proteins
could be an important etiological factor. It has been shown that
the pathogenic gene involved in the development of BD is pinpointed
to HLA-B51. Finally, the treatment of BD is discussed in detail,
including new options like anti-TNF-alpha-antibodies and
interferon-alpha. Immunology of Behcet's Disease summarizes our
knowledge regarding the most important factors that induce or
trigger BD and will stimulate research in the field and help to
initiate new ideas.
