Based on the German case, this open access book highlights the increasing flows of migration and the internationalisation of individual life courses. It analyses the experiences of migration across four central domains - employment and income, partners and families, health and wellbeing, as well as friends and social participation - which potentially have far-reaching consequences for social inequalities and life chances. The book showcases results from an innovative probability sample that is representative of German emigrants who recently moved abroad and remigrants who recently returned from abroad and compares their international experiences with the sedentary population in Germany. Stays abroad, whether temporary or permanently, have become the new normal for increasing numbers of people from highly developed welfare states. Unnoticed from mainstream migration studies, these countries are today not only major immigration countries but also important sources of international mobility. By providing an empirically founded prism of the global lives of German migrants, this book is a valuable resource for students and researchers of migration, social inequality, and the life course and provides practitioners with insights into these regularly overlooked aspects of international migration.

Im Vergleich zu den "goldenen Zeiten" der Vergangenheit scheint heute kaum ein Job mehr sicher zu sein. Erstaunlicher Weise fehlten bislang jedoch reprasentative Analysen, die diese Ansicht uberpruft hatten. Eingebunden in eine umfassende theoretische Auseinandersetzung u.a. mit dem Begriff der Arbeitsmarktflexibilitat nahren die im Buch vorgelegten uberraschenden Ergebnisse Zweifel an der These einer in den vergangenen Jahrzehnten generell zunehmenden Beschaftigungsinstabilitat. Schliesslich fuhrt dies dann auch zu einem alternativen Szenario zur "Zukunft der Arbeit" jenseits der aktuellen Mainstreamdebatten.

Ausgangspunkt fur das vorliegende Buch bildete ein nur sechs Seiten umfass- der Beitrag zum Thema 'Volunteer Work', den die Herausgeber Anfang 2005 fur einen Sammelband mit ersten Ergebnissen auf Basis des Survey of Health,- geing and Retirement in Europe (SHARE) verfasst hatten. Die gute Zusamm- arbeit und das nunmehr geweckte Interesse am 'produktiven Altern' fuhrten zu dem Entschluss, bei der Fritz Thyssen Stiftung ein zweijahriges Projekt uber 'Informelle Arbeit von AElteren in Deutschland und Europa' zu beantragen. Das Projekt wurde Ende 2005 bewilligt und damit das (finanzielle) Fundament fur die weitere Zusammenarbeit der Herausgeber gelegt. Daher gilt an dieser Stelle unser erster, grosser Dank der Fritz Thyssen Stiftung fur die Foerderung unserer Arbeit. Aus dem Projektzusammenhang heraus entwickelte sich der Wunsch nach einem intensiveren Austausch mit gleichgesinnten Kollegen und Kolleginnen. Der 33. Kongress der Deutschen Gesellschaft fur Soziologie, der 2006 in Kassel stattfand, schien hierfur ein besonders geeignetes Forum zu sein. Daher gilt unser Dank, zweitens, den Organisatoren des Kongresses fur die Zulassung der Ad-hoc Gruppe 'Informelle Arbeit im alternden Europa', deren ausgearbeiteten Beitrage einen Kern der hier gesammelten Aufsatze bilden. Weitere wertvolle Anregungen erhielten die Herausgeber als Mitarbeiter bzw.
