This influential festschrift honours the legacy of Annette
Karmiloff-Smith, a seminal thinker in the field of child
development and a pioneer in developmental cognitive neuroscience.
The current volume brings together many of the researchers,
collaborators and students who worked with Professor
Karmiloff-Smith to show how her ideas have influenced and continue
to influence their own research. Over four parts, each covering a
different phase or domain of Karmiloff-Smith's research career,
leading developmental psychologists in cognition, neuroscience and
computer science reflect on her extensive contribution, from her
early work with Piaget in Geneva to her innovative research project
investigating children with Down syndrome to understand the
mechanisms of Alzheimer's disease. The chapters provide a mix of
cutting-edge science and reminiscence, providing a fascinating
insight into the historical contexts in which many of Annette's
theoretical insights arose, including such ideas as the
microgenetic approach, representational redescription and
neuroconstructivism. The chapters also provide updates about how
earlier theoretical ideas have stood the test of time, and present
unpublished data from the early years of Annette's career. Taking
Development Seriously is essential reading for students and
scholars in child development and developmental neuroscience.

Social Entrepreneurship and Innovation in Rural Europe investigates
how social entrepreneurship advances social innovation in rural
Europe and contributes to fighting social and economic challenges
in these regions. Based on longitudinal data collected in four
European countries, this book explains how social enterprises enact
their business model based on an entrepreneurial reconfiguration of
resources they obtain from their network relations, and how their
activities empower local communities, driving change and eventually
innovation. In these activities, the entrepreneurial mindset and
the role as intermediary between different groups and domains of
society help to reframe challenges into opportunities. The argument
in this book develops from a description of what social enterprises
report to do to an analysis of how they do it, and results in an
explanation of why they take these actions. In doing so it
gradually broadens the view from a focus on the social enterprises
themselves to their interactions and network partners and, finally,
to their positioning in societal fields. The presented model
complements network theory with the concept of strategic action
fields. This book reveals the crucial role of social
entrepreneurship in innovation in rural regions, and the rich
insights provided have far reaching implications for research,
practice and policy. This book will appeal to everyone interested
in the interface of social entrepreneurship, innovation, and
regional/rural development, either on a practical or academic
level.
The field of educational neuroscience uses new insights about the
neural mechanisms of learning to improve educational practices and
outcomes. The first volume to bring together the latest knowledge
on the development of educational neuroscience from a life-span
perspective, this important text offers state of the art,
authoritative research findings in educational neuroscience before
providing evidence-based recommendations for classroom practice.
Thomas, Mareschal, Dumontheil, and the team of expert international
contributors assembled in this volume thoroughly explore four main
themes throughout the book. The first theme is individual
differences, or what makes children perform better or worse in the
classroom. The second theme is the nature of individual differences
at different stages in development, from early years into
adulthood. The third theme addresses cognitive enhancement,
summarizing research that has investigated activities that might
give general benefits to cognition. And the fourth theme considers
the translation of research findings into classroom practices,
discussing broader ethical issues raised by educational
neuroscience, and what teachers need to know about neuroscience to
enhance their day-to-day practice. Specific topics explored include
neuropsychological perspectives on socioeconomic disparities in
educational achievement, reading difficulties, phonological skills,
executive function, and emotional development. Educational
Neuroscience is essential reading for researchers and graduate
students of educational psychology, developmental science,
developmental psychology, and cognitive psychology, especially
those specializing in emotion regulation.

This book constitutes the proceedings of the 4th International
Conference on Decision Support Systems, ICDSST 2018, held in
Heraklion, Greece, in May 2018. The main topic of this year's
conference was "Sustainable Data-Driven and Evidence Based Decision
Support". The 15 papers presented in this volume were carefully
reviewed and selected from 71 submissions. They were organized in
topical sections named: decision support systems for a sustainable
society; decision support systems serving the public; decision
support systems in management and organization; and advances in
decision support systems' technologies and methods. The EWG-DSS
series of International Conference on Decision Support System
Technology (ICDSST), starting with ICDSST 2015 in Belgrade, were
planned to consolidate the tradition of annual events organized by
the EWG-DSS in offering a platform for European and international
DSS communities, comprising the academic and industrial sectors, to
present state-of-the-art DSS research and developments, to discuss
current challenges that surround decision-making processes, to
exchange ideas about realistic and innovative solutions, and to
co-develop potential business opportunities.
Texts from the papyrus collection of Washington University have
already appeared in Veme B. Schuman, Washington University Papyri
1: Non Literary Texts (American Studies in Papyrology 17), Chico
(Califomia) 1980. This new volume is intended as a continuation,
and the texts appearing in it have been numbered accordingly,
subsequent to Schuman's. We divided our texts at an early stage,
and while we have consulted each other extensively since then, we
retain chief responsibility each for the pieces we began with:
Maresch for 69-72, 77, 78, 80, 83, 86, 88, 90-94, 101, 102, 104,
107, and 108; Packman for 62-68, 73-76, 79, 81, 82, 84, 85, 87, 89,
95-100, 103, 105, and 106. The editors of P.Wash.Univ. II were
brought together by Reinhold Merkelbach, to whom they are grateful
for his continuing support and advice. Our thanks are due to the
Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft, whose suppon enabled Maresch to
visit St. Louis in 1988, and the American Council of Leamed
Societies, whose fellowship brought Packman to Cologne in 1989- 90.
An ACLS grant in 1966 made possible the photographs on which has
depended most of the work done on the collection since: Some of
them appear in the plates of this volume.
This volume contains the proceedings of a NATO Advanced Study
Institute which was held in Alghero, Sardinia, in July 1991. The
development of computers in the recent years has lead to the
emergence of unconventional ideas aiming at solving old problems.
Among these, the possibility of computing directly fluid flows from
the trajectories of constituent particles has been much exploited
in the last few years: lattice gases cellular automata and more
generally Molecular Dynamics have been used to reproduce and study
complex flows. Whether or not these methods may someday compete
with more traditional approaches is a question which cannot be
answered at the present time: it will depend on the new computer
architectures as well as on the possibility to develop very simple
models to reproduce the most complex phenomena taking place in the
approach of fully developed turbulence or plastic flows. In any
event, these molecular methods are already used, and sometimes in
an applied engineering context, to study strong shock waves,
chemistry induced shocks or motion of dislocations in plastic
flows, that is in domains where a fully continuum description
appears insufficient. The main topic of our Institute was the
molecular simulations of fluid flows. The project to hold this
Institute was made three years ago, in the summer of 1989 during a
NATO workshop in Brussels on the same subject.
This volume contains the proceedings of a workshop which was held
in Brussels during the month of August 1989. A strong motivation
for organizing this workshop was to bring together people who have
been involved in the microscopic simulation of phenomena occuring
on "large" space and time scales. Indeed, results obtained in the
last years by different groups tend to support the idea that
macroscopic behavior already appears in systems small enough so as
to be modelled by a collection of interacting particles on a
(super) computer. Such an approach is certainly desirable to study
situations where no satisfactory phenomenological theory is known
to hold, or where solutions of the equations are too hard to obtain
numerically. It is also interesting from a more fundamental point
of view, namely the investigation of the limits of validity of the
macroscopic description itself. The main technique used in bridging
the gap between the macro and micro worlds has been the molecular
dynamics simulations, that is the numerical solution of the
equations of motion of the model particles which constitute the
system under study, a gas, a liquid or even a solid. However, this
technique is by no means the only one.
The behaviour of many complex materials extends over time- and lengthscales well beyond those that can normally be described using standard molecular dynamics or Monte Carlo simulation techniques. As progress is coming more through refined simulation methods than from increased computer power, this volume is intended as both an introduction and a review of all relevant modern methods that will shape molecular simulation in the forthcoming decade. Written as a set of tutorial reviews, the book will be of use to specialists and nonspecialists alike.
'The reference list is excellent. This is a worthwhile (though
'niche') book that will be attractive to a particular sector of the
general reading public interested in mathematical riddles and
puzzles. Professional educators might well employ it in integrated
learning settings. Summing Up: Recommended. All
readers.'CHOICEImmerse yourself in the fascinating world of
geometry and spatial ability - either individually or in small
groups, either as challenges or play problems! Here are four
reasons why you should work with this book:This book offers a very
unique opportunity to enhance your spatial ability, your
mathematical competence, and your logical thinking. The authors
arranged 45 problems - including more than 120 tasks - in a
well-balanced order, which have been tested with a variety of
populations.
On an extended visit to Achmim in 1968 to study the Coptic Church
and its liturgy, our Duke University colleague Professor O.S.
Wintermute became acquainted with a local merchant, who eventually
showed him some papyri that he said he had unearthed in his garden.
Those he would part with Wintermute acquired and on his return
donated to the Duke University Li- brary, sixteen fragments
altogether of which nine are in hands of the lli or IV century and
were later seen to*derive from the archive of Ammon Scholasti- cus
of Panopolis. Since all were fragmentary, though one was large (P.
Duke inv. 18), none revealed its context. Only after other papyri
from the Ammon archive came to light in 1971 did their source
become apparent: three joined Cologne papyri (P.Koln inv. 4532,
4535 and 4539), three others pa- pyri acquired by Duke in 1971
(P.Duke inv. 179, 182 and 193 respectively).

Since publication of the fourth edition of Labor Relations in the
Public Sector, public sector unions have encountered strong
headwinds in many parts of the U.S. Membership is falling in some
jurisdictions, public opinion has shifted against the unions, and
political forces are leaning against them. Retaining the structure
that made the previous editions so popular, this fifth edition
incorporates a complete round of updates, particularly sections on
recent trends in membership figures, new legislation, and new
politics as they influence bargaining rights. See What's New in the
Fifth Edition: Up to date examination and analysis of public sector
labor relations and collective bargaining Important changes in the
public labor relations and unionization landscape Updated analysis
of the financial and human resource outcomes of collective
bargaining in the public sector Collective bargaining institutions
and processes in government Completely updated in terms of the
scholarly and professional literature and relevant events, the new
edition identifies and explains the implications of the new
collective bargaining environment, including financial and human
resource management issues and outcomes. As in previous editions,
collective bargaining and labor relations are addressed at all
levels of government, with comparisons to the private and nonprofit
sectors. Designed to be classroom friendly, it includes discussions
of the most recent literature and case studies as well as
end-of-chapter assignments and quizzes. Practical tips and advice
are offered for those engaged in collective bargaining and labor
relations.

Oates. Ihnen allen gilt unser herzlicher Dank.

Nummern 1, 2, 4, 5, 10-12, 15, 16, 18-20 entsprechen in leicht
uberarbeiteter Fassung den Nr. 1-12 der von James M.S. Cowey
verfassten Dissertation "Das Archiv des judischen Politeuma in
Herakleopolis und das Archiv des Phrurarchen Dioskurides. Achtzehn
Texten eingeraumt. Reinhold Merkelbach, Rudolf Kassel und Wolfgang
