Taking as its common thread the overtly theatrical nature of early modern society and its cultural and political manifestations this book studies dramatic texts, dedications, autobiographies, adaptations and performative practices, to prove that the boundaries between on and off stage performances of gender are blurred. Thus, the limits that separate theatre and life are highly permeable and the relations between both are bidirectional: the performativity of gender and identity is an idea that the theatre takes from and transfers to society. This concept is applied to a wide timeframe creating a dialogue between different historical times and cultural backgrounds. Furthermore, the authors explore sexualities as written and performed by both men and women, offering a wider scope to determine whether and to what extent normative gender roles are being questioned, contested or reinforced.

This book contains a collection of essays dealing with different re-workings of the Arthurian myth. The papers trace the Arthurian myth, inquiring into its origins in Ancient Rome, and pointing out influences from the Dark Ages up to the present. Reference is made to oral tradition, visual narrative and iconic messages in manuscript illumination, the myth in medieval chivalry and the decay of the latter. Parallelisms are drawn with Christian figures and beliefs, with Irish literature and Gaelic mythology, and with novels and films. The methodological approaches and points of view show great diversity: from an inquiry into the historical sources of the myth, to comparative literature, inter-textuality, feminist criticism, analysis of cinema up to a refreshing practical classroom exercise.

This book unveils the political economy of land squatting in a third world city, Montevideo, in Uruguay. It focuses on the effects of democratization on the mobilization of the poorest as well as on the role played by different types of brokers, from radical Catholic priests to local leaders embedded in political networks. Through a multi-method endeavour that combines ethnography, historical sources, and quantitative time series, the author reconstructs the history of the informal city since the late 1940s to the present. From a social movements/contentious politics perspective, the book challenges the assumption that socioeconomic factors such as poverty were the only causes triggering land squatting.

Este volumen embarca al lector en un viaje a traves de las experiencias y emociones de cinco mujeres de elite que, en tiempos de cambio, fueron protagonistas de sus vidas y escribieron sobre ellas, regalando al interesado su memoria convertida en textos. Todas ellas tuvieron oportunidades, convirtieron la posibilidad en una necesidad, y su necesidad en una realidad, y contribuyeron, con el relato de sus vivencias en Espana y America, a lo que mas tarde llegaria a conformar un genero literario. Algunas viajaron gracias a la profesion de sus conyuges (Caroline E. Cushing y Lady Louisa Tenison). Otras buscaron en los viajes y la escritura una via de escape a sus problemas sentimentales (Baronesa de Wilson o Isabella Bird), o a sus necesidades intelectuales (Maria de Maeztu). En todas, sin embargo, el viaje constituiria mucho mas: una verdadera pasion.

Este libro analiza siete traducciones de obras dramaticas de Shakespeare al espanol: los Hamlet de Leandro Fernandez de Moratin (1798), Jose Maria Peman y Salvador de Madariaga (ambos de 1949), Macbeth de Jose Garcia de Villalta (1838), Domando la tarasca, traduccion de The Taming of the Shrew de Maria de la O Lejarraga (1917), Otelo o el panuelo encantado de Leon Felipe (1960) y El mercader de Venecia de Vicente Molina Foix (1995), todas ellas concebidas para ser representadas y no simplemente leidas. El objetivo es investigar de forma interdisciplinar estas traducciones, tanto a partir de enfoques propios de la Traductologia - por ejemplo, los estudios sistemico-descriptivos de traduccion - como de la Sociologia, los estudios de Recepcion, la traduccion teatral en particular y el papel de la censura o la autocensura. Se trata de un analisis de siete casos concretos seleccionados por su interes traductologico que pone de manifiesto, entre otras cosas, la insercion de las obras traducidas en los proyectos artisticos de los respectivos autores-traductores asi como la imposibilidad de desligar su estudio de las epocas en que se situan.

Tolkien no habria estado de acuerdo con el empleo del termino "Occidente" para hablar del espacio legendario y cultural que tenia en mente cuando reconstruyo y re-mitifico el pasado literario en su obra cumbre. El termino proviene de la Antiguedad Clasica y no abarca en su origen los territorios del vasto Norte, cuyas tradiciones literarias Tolkien tambien incorporo en su vision mitificada del Oeste. El Oeste de Tolkien sintetiza leyendas y expresiones literarias del oeste, norte y sur de Europa, y por ello los personajes de El Senor de los Anillos a menudo hunden sus raices en una multitud de generos literarios. El presente estudio recorre la evolucion de los personajes principales de la obra de Tolkien y explica, entre otras cosas, como el dialogo entre diferentes generos literarios puede dar cuenta de las aparentes incoherencias en el personaje de Aragorn, los diferentes papeles genericos que desempena Gandalf a lo largo de la historia, o como unos prosaicos hobbits, surgidos de la Inglaterra rural del siglo XIX, son capaces de relacionarse con los antiguos mundos epicos de Rohan y Gondor.

?Que importancia tenia la imagen mitificada del Oeste americano en la imaginacion de King durante la elaboracion de El Pistolero? Mucha, a juzgar por el resultado. Al mismo tiempo, parece que la fertil imaginacion de King se conjura con las referencias culturales contemporaneas. El propio autor confiesa su anhelo por crear una novela que contega el espiritu de busqueda, aventura y magia de El Senor de los Anillos (1954), pero situada en el espacio del lejano Oeste americano al estilo de la pelicula de spaghetti western El bueno, el feo y el malo (1966) de Leone. Con El Pistolero, King da otra vuelta de tuerca al mito del Oeste, y con el presente estudio pretendemos tender puentes entre diferentes tradiciones literarias para entender la particular indosincrasia de la obra de King, capaz de albergar las tradiciones narrativas de la Antigu edad Clasica, la epoca medieval y la moderna, con sus tintes goticos, romanticos y fantasticos, a la vez que desarrollar y modernizar el mito del Oeste americano e introducir al lector contemporaneo en un nuevo universo literario.
