A tale of courtly intrigue from the 14th century, this novel offers a period portrait of Enrique III, el Doliente, King of Castille from 1390 to 1406, who was called "the ill" or "the suffering," due to his poor health. Amid his difficulties, he had to confront the aristocracy when it tried to take advantage of political instability stimulated by the massacre of Jews of 1391.

Mariano Jose de Larra (Madrid, 1809-Madrid, 1837), Espana. Hijo de un medico del ejercito frances, en 1813 tuvo que huir con su familia a ese pais tras la retirada de las fuerzas bonapartistas expulsadas de la peninsula. Como dato sorprendente cabe decir que a su regreso a Espana apenas hablaba castellano. Estudio en el colegio de los escolapios de Madrid, despues con los jesuitas y mas tarde derecho en Valladolid. Siendo muy joven se enamoro de una amante de su padre y este incidente marco su vida. En 1829 se caso con Josefa Wetoret, la union resulto tambien un fracaso. Las relaciones adulteras que mantuvo con Dolores Armijo se reflejan en el drama Macias (1834) y en la novela historica El doncel de don Enrique el Doliente (1834), inspiradas en la leyenda de un trovador medieval ejecutado por el marido de su amante. Trabajo, ademas, en los periodicos El Espanol, El Redactor General y El Mundo y se intereso por la politica. Aunque fue diputado, no ocupo su escano debido a la disolucion de las Cortes. Larra se suicido el 13 de febrero de 1837, tras un encuentro con Dolores Armijo.

La personalidad de don Juan de Austria siempre se ha opuesto a la de su hermano Felipe II, saliendo beneficiado el primero. Juan es el vencedor de Lepanto mientras el monarca nos parece un hombre hurano y triste, encerrado en El Escorial. Don Juan era hijo natural del emperador Carlos V y Barbara Blomberg. Estudio en Alcala de Henares, junto a Alejandro Farnesio y el principe Carlos.
