Child Sexual Abuse and the Catholic Church - Gender, Power, and Organizational Culture (Hardcover): Marie Keenan Child Sexual Abuse and the Catholic Church - Gender, Power, and Organizational Culture (Hardcover)
Marie Keenan
R2,305 Discovery Miles 23 050 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

A meticulously researched inside look at child sexual abuse by clergy, this exhaustive, hard-hitting analysis weaves together interviews with abusive priests and church historical and administrative details to propose a new way of thinking about clerical sexual offenders. Linking the personal and the institutional, researcher and therapist Marie Keenan locates the problem of child sexual abuse not exclusively in individual pathology, but also within larger systemic factors, such as the very institution of priesthood itself, the Catholic take on sexuality, clerical culture, power relations, governance structures of the Catholic Church, the process of formation for priesthood and religious life, and the complex manner in which these factors coalesce to create serious institutional risks for boundary violations, including child sexual abuse. Keenan draws on the priests' own words not to excuse their horrific crimes, but to offer the first in-depth account of a tragic, multi-faceted phenomenon. What emerges is a troubling portrait of a Church in crisis and a series of recommendations that call for nothing less than a new ecclesiology and a new, more critical theology. Only through radical institutional reform, Keenan argues, can a more representative and accountable Church emerge. Child Sexual Abuse and the Catholic Church is a unique reference for scholars of the Church and therapists who work with both victims and offenders, as well as a forward-thinking blueprint for reform.

Restorative Responses to Sexual Violence - Legal, Social and Therapeutic Dimensions (Hardcover): Estelle Zinsstag, Marie Keenan Restorative Responses to Sexual Violence - Legal, Social and Therapeutic Dimensions (Hardcover)
Estelle Zinsstag, Marie Keenan
R4,228 Discovery Miles 42 280 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Sexual violence, in all its forms, is a crime for which anecdotal accounts and scholarly reports suggest victims in their great majority do not receive adequate 'justice' or redress. The theory and practice of restorative justice is rapidly developing and offers some well-argued new avenues for dealings with crime in general. It has the potential to be extended to cases of sexual violence and a number of small scale programmes are already underway across the world. Restorative Responses to Sexual Violence examines this innovative justice paradigm in more depth in the particular context of sexual trauma and violence in order to establish the empirical realities of restorative justice approaches in cases of sexual violence, and considers how such approaches could be developed adequately in the future. This book is divided into two parts, each representing a key area of research and practice: theoretical and conceptual frameworks, and justice and therapeutic perspectives. This international collection brings together leading expert scholars and practitioners to offer both theoretical and practical perspectives on restorative justice and sexual violence. This book will be of interest to researchers in the field of law, criminology, psychology, social science, social work and psychotherapy, as well as practitioners in the fields of criminal justice, restorative justice and sex offender and victim trauma therapies.

Broken Faith - Why Hope Matters (Paperback, New edition): Joe Egan, Marie Keenan, Patrick Claffey Broken Faith - Why Hope Matters (Paperback, New edition)

This book is a theological reflection on the broken state of faith within the Catholic Church in Ireland following more than two decades of revelations about institutional and child sexual abuse and the Church's now acknowledged failure to respond to the abuse in an appropriate way. The result has been broken lives, broken faith and a broken church. While the book has a theological purpose, it employs a see-judge-act methodology in attempting to come to terms with a very complex problem. Following a broad introduction, the first section sets out to listen to the voices of the victims. The second section consists of an interdisciplinary academic analysis, with significant input from psychology and also from history and social studies. The final section of the book engages in theology, seeking to place us in a Kairos moment that might allow us to look beyond our broken faith. This, however, requires an analysis of the theological misunderstandings that led to the aberration of clericalism, the resulting abuse of power and the wider malaise within the Church. St Paul is suggested as a "mentor", as we seek to restore trust and rebuild the Church in a radically new way. The book ultimately seeks a renewal of our broken faith, searching for trajectories towards healing and wholeness, truth and reconciliation.

Sexual Violence and Restorative Justice (Hardcover, 1): Marie Keenan, Estelle Zinsstag Sexual Violence and Restorative Justice (Hardcover, 1)
Marie Keenan, Estelle Zinsstag
R2,313 Discovery Miles 23 130 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Concerned by the high attrition rates for sexual crime and the secondary victimization experienced by victims during their participation in the criminal justice system, this book analyses the extent to which restorative justice can address the justice gap that exists in current justice provision. Building on clinical experience and earlier research on sexual crime the authors engage with the complex dynamics and traumatic impact of sexual crime as a critical starting point for their research and examine whether restorative justice can contribute to a more enhanced justice response. The book presents extensive new data on restorative justice as applied in sexual violence cases across the globe. It engages with feminist concerns regarding the traumatic impact of sexual violence and the power imbalances that characterise these offences, as well as the potential for re-traumatisation and re-victimisation during the judicial process. While there is a risk of coercion of the victim to participate in the process, and manipulation of restorative justice by the offender, restorative justice has the potential to lead to the reprivatisation of sexual crime and ultimately to its decriminalisation. Having examined these topics in detail, the book concludes there is an important role for restorative justice in addressing the justice gap that exists after sexual crime and offers guidance on how this can be achieved.

Canadian Women in the Sport of Rowing (Paperback): Susan Marie Keenan Canadian Women in the Sport of Rowing (Paperback)
Susan Marie Keenan
R1,401 Discovery Miles 14 010 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This action research project explored the various roles of women in the sport of rowing within the organizational structure of Rowing Canada Aviron. The purpose of this study was to assess the organization's current ability and desire to promote the advancement of women in every capacity within the organizational framework, and to identify detailed action items that RCA could incorporate into their long-term strategic plan. The study involved conducting four focus groups with a total of 18 participants and, for comparative analysis, re-implementing a Sport Canada endorsed Gender Snap-Shot survey, first conducted in 1998. Through the identification of three themes-communication, learning, and leadership-the results yielded some realistic and achievable recommendations, strengthening the outlook for the future.
