The history of development is one marked by insecurities, violence, and persistent conflict. It is not surprising, therefore, that development is now thought of as one of the central challenges of world politics. However, its complexities are often overlooked in scholarly analysis and among policy practitioners, who tend to adopt a technocratic approach to the crisis of development and violence. This book brings together a wide range of contributions aimed at investigating different aspects of the history of development and violence, and its implications for contemporary efforts to consolidate the development-security nexus. From environmental concerns, through vigilante citizenship, to the legacies of armed conflicts during and after decolonization, the different chapters reconstruct the contradictory history of development and critically engage contemporary responses and their implications for social and political analyses. In examining violence and insecurity in relation to core organising principles of world politics the contributors engage the problems associated with the nation state and the inter-state system and underlying assumptions of the promises of progress. The book offers a range of perspectives on the contradictions of development, and on how domination, violence and resistance have been conceived. At the same time it exemplifies the relevance of alternative methodological and conceptual approaches to contemporary challenges of development. Dazu muss das Management den unterschiedlichen Aktivitaten durch langfristige Zielvorgaben und -vereinbarungen eine eindeutige Grundausrichtung geben. Die Steuerung eines Unternehmens geschieht durch die Zuteilung von Ressourcen, um am Markt erfolgreich zu sein und eine gezielte, systematische und konsistente Auswahl zwischen den verschiedenen Investitions- und Deinvestitionsalternativen zu treffen. Fur den Erfolg eines Unternehmens sind einerseits die Qualitat der zur Verfugung stehenden Informationen, aufgrund derer Entscheidungen getroffen werden. Andererseits ist eine sinnvolle Wahl zwischen verschiedenen Optionen nur moglich, wenn die Ziele der Unternehmung klar definiert sind. Das erfolgreiche Auftreten am Markt ist der zwar ein grundsatzliches Ziel, das die Mehrheit der Unternehmungen verfolgen durfte. Doch schon die Definition von Zielgrossen, die den Erfolg eines Unternehmens messen, ist problematisch: Zum einen existiert eine Vielzahl von Auffassungen daruber, was den tatsachlichen Erfolg" der unternehmerischen Tatigkeit ausmacht. Zum anderen impliziert ein Erfolgsmassstab immer auch einen Grad an Quantifizierbarkeit, damit er fur die operative Steuerung nutzbar gemacht werden kann."1 So haben sich aus Sicht der Finanzwirtschaft unterschiedlichste Kennzahlen herausgebildet, die man in klassische (z.B. Jahrhunderts platzte der Traum von der New Economy, die glaubte, die bisher geltenden Regeln im Wirtschaftsleben ausser Kraft gesetzt zu haben. Treibende Kraft hinter diesem Glauben waren die neuen Kommunikationstechnologien - vor allem das Internet - mit der die Wirtschaft vom Industrie- ins Informationszeitalter uberging. Obwohl die New Economy heute auf dem Boden der wirtschaftlichen Realitat gelandet ist, haben die modernen Kommunikationstechniken trotzdem zu tiefgreifenden Veranderungen in den Unternehmen gefuhrt. Sie wirken sich nicht nur intern auf die Unternehmensorganisation aus, sondern auch auf die externen Beziehungen zu Lieferanten, Kunden oder Konkurrenten. Im Bereich der Unternehmensfuhrung ist es heute moglich, mit Hilfe moderner Informationssysteme vorhandene Unternehmensdaten in sekundenschnelle zu verdichten, zu kombinieren, miteinander zu vergleichen und zukunftige Entwicklungen zu prognostizieren. Planungs- und Entscheidungssysteme liefern der Unternehmensfuhrung Werkzeuge, die sie mit Hilfe von Datenanalysen bei der Entscheidungsfindung unterstutzen. Damit hat sich auch die Steuerung der Unternehmen im Informationszeitalter entscheidend verandert. Daneben setzte sich seit den achtziger Jahren das Konzept der wertorientierten Unternehmensfuhrung auf Basis des Shareholder Value immer weiter durch, bei dem der Unternehmenswert klassische Kriterien wie z. B. den Gewinn als Steuerungsgrosse ersetzte. Letztendlich waren es wohl die neuen, immer erschwinglicher werdenden Moglichkeiten der elektronischen Verarbeitung von Informationen, die auch kleineren Unternehmen die bis dahin aufwandige Analyse der Unternehmensdaten ermoglichte.
