From German unification in 1871 through the early 1960s,
confessional tensions between Catholics and Protestants were a
source of deep division in German society. Engaging this period of
historic strife, Germany and the Confessional Divide focuses on
three traumatic episodes: the Kulturkampf waged against the
Catholic Church in the 1870s, the collapse of the Hohenzollern
monarchy and state-supported Protestantism after World War I, and
the Nazi persecution of the churches. It argues that memories of
these traumatic experiences regularly reignited confessional
tensions. Only as German society became increasingly secular did
these memories fade and tensions ease.

characterization, site remediation, and building decontamination
and decommissioning in both chemical and radioactive environments.
The book provides guidance on how to: Implement the US EPA's latest
Data Quality Objective's procedure Prepare and maintain defensible
field documentation Use quality control sampling, data
verification, data validation, and data quality assessment to

In this exhilarating thriller from four million copy bestselling
author Mark Edwards, Aidan's spent years looking for his sister.
Will he ever find her? Two years ago, on a trip to Seattle to visit
her brother Aidan, fifteen-year-old Scarlett vanished into thin
air. After years of false leads and dead ends, Aidan has almost
given up hope. But then a woman sees a girl running for her life
across a forest clearing in Northern California. She is convinced
the girl is the missing Scarlett. But could it really be her?
Heading south, Aidan finds a fire-ravaged town covered in
missing-teenager posters. The locals seem afraid, the police won't
answer any questions and it looks like another dead end-until a
chance meeting with returned local Lana gives Aidan his first clue.
But as they piece together what happened, Lana and Aidan make
deadly enemies. Enemies willing to do anything to silence them.
Only one thing matters now: finding Scarlett-even if it kills him.
In 221 BC, the First Emperor of Qin unified the lands that would
become the heart of a Chinese empire. Though forged by conquest,
this vast domain depended for its political survival on a
fundamental reshaping of Chinese culture. With this informative
book, we are present at the creation of an ancient imperial order
whose major features would endure for two millennia. The Qin and
Han constitute the "classical period" of Chinese history-a role
played by the Greeks and Romans in the West. Mark Edward Lewis
highlights the key challenges faced by the court officials and
scholars who set about governing an empire of such scale and
diversity of peoples. He traces the drastic measures taken to
transcend, without eliminating, these regional differences: the
invention of the emperor as the divine embodiment of the state; the
establishment of a common script for communication and a
state-sponsored canon for the propagation of Confucian ideals; the
flourishing of the great families, whose domination of local
society rested on wealth, landholding, and elaborate kinship
structures; the demilitarization of the interior; and the impact of
non-Chinese warrior-nomads in setting the boundaries of an emerging
Chinese identity. The first of a six-volume series on the history
of imperial China, The Early Chinese Empires illuminates many
formative events in China's long history of imperialism-events
whose residual influence can still be discerned today.

In studies of early Christian thought, 'philosophy' is often a
synonym for 'Platonism', or at most for 'Platonism and Stoicism'.
Nevertheless, it was Aristotle who, from the sixth century AD to
the Italian Renaissance, was the dominant Greek voice in Christian,
Muslim and Jewish philosophy. Aristotle and Early Christian Thought
is the first book in English to give a synoptic account of the slow
appropriation of Aristotelian thought in the Christian world from
the second to the sixth century. Concentrating on the great
theological topics - creation, the soul, the Trinity, and
Christology - it makes full use of modern scholarship on the
Peripatetic tradition after Aristotle, explaining the significance
of Neoplatonism as a mediator of Aristotelian logic. While
stressing the fidelity of Christian thinkers to biblical
presuppositions which were not shared by the Greek schools, it also
describes their attempts to overcome the pagan objections to
biblical teachings by a consistent use of Aristotelian principles,
and it follows their application of these principles to matters
which lay outside the purview of Aristotle himself. This volume
offers a valuable study not only for students of Christian theology
in its formative years, but also for anyone seeking an introduction
to the thought of Aristotle and its developments in Late Antiquity.

“Brilliant, shocking and very creepy. Mark Edwards has done it
again.”—Elly Griffiths, bestselling author of the Dr Ruth
Galloway series A perfect summer. A perfect stranger. A perfect
nightmare. When British twenty-somethings Ruth and Adam are offered
the chance to spend the summer housesitting in New York, they
can’t say no. Young, in love and on the cusp of professional
success, they feel as if luck is finally on their side. So the
moment that Eden turns up on the doorstep, drenched from a summer
storm, it seems only right to share a bit of that good fortune.
Beautiful and charismatic, Eden claims to be a friend of the
homeowners, who told her she could stay whenever she was in New
York. They know you’re not supposed to talk to strangers—let
alone invite them into your home—but after all, Eden’s only a
stranger until they get to know her. As suspicions creep in that
Eden may not be who she claims to be, they begin to wonder if
they’ve made a terrible mistake… The House Guest is the
chilling new psychological thriller from the three million copy
bestselling author of Here to Stay and Follow You Home.
While it has often been recognised that the development of
Christian orthodoxy was stimulated by the speculations of those who
are now called heretics, it is still widely assumed that their
contribution was merely catalytic, that they called forth the
exposition of what the main church already believed but had not yet
been required to formulate. This book maintains that scholars have
underrated the constructive role of these "heretical" speculations
in the evolution of dogma, showing that salient elements in the
doctrines of the fall, the Trinity and the union of God and man in
Christ derive from teachings that were initially rejected by the
main church. Mark Edwards also reveals how authors who epitomised
orthodoxy in their own day sometimes favoured teachings which were
later considered heterodox, and that their doctrines underwent
radical revision before they became a fixed element of orthodoxy.
The first half of the volume discusses the role of Gnostic
theologians in the formation of catholic thought; the second half
will offer an unfashionable view of the controversies which gave
rise to the councils of Nicaea, Ephesus and Chalcedon . Many of the
theories advanced here have not been broached elsewhere, and no
synthesis on this scale had been attempted by other scholars. While
this book proposes a revision in the scholarly perception of early
Christendom, it also demonstrates the essential unity of the
tradition.
The Hmong (pronounced "mong" in English) are a mountain-dwelling
subgroup of the Miao of southwest China. In the 18th and 19th
centuries, the Hmong began migrating southeast to Vietnam, Laos,
and Thailand. Then in the second half of the 20th century, due
mainly to their participation in the Second Indochina War
(1954-1975), the Hmong began migrating to the West. Today, the
Hmong are one of the fastest growing ethnic origin populations in
the United States, growing from about 94,000 in the 1990 census to
about 190,000 in the U.S. census bureau's 2005 American Community
Survey. With this rapid expansion in the population, a
substantially increased interest in Hmong-related written works,
multimedia materials, and websites among students, scholars,
service professionals, and the general public has arisen. To help
meet that interest, author Mark E. Pfeifer has compiled
Hmong-Related Works 1996-2006: An Annotated Bibliography, which
includes full reference information (including internet links to
articles where available) and descriptive summaries for 610
Hmong-related works.
