Sir Walter Raleigh - In Life and Legend (Hardcover): Mark Nicholls, Penry Williams Sir Walter Raleigh - In Life and Legend (Hardcover)
Mark Nicholls, Penry Williams 1
R1,912 Discovery Miles 19 120 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

New biography of one of the key figures in British history focusing on both his writing and legacy. Sir Walter Raleigh is a figure writ large in popular imagination. Yet how can we understand this man who was soldier, voyager, visionary, courtier, politician, poet, historian, patriot and 'traitor'? We know some facts, and much can be learned from Raleigh's prose and poetry about his ideas, personality, feelings and values. Important new texts of his works have recently been published: we now possess reliable versions of his poems, his letters and his travel narratives. No biography of Raleigh, however, can be complete without an assessment of his posthumous reputation. Myths that accumulated around him tell us something about the man himself, but far more about the perceptions of his own and subsequent generations. Raleigh's talents as a writer ensured his positive legacy, but the appropriation of his legend for so many differing political uses has left us with a complex picture. In this original and important new biography Williams and Nicholls set this right.

Service Life Prediction of Polymers and Coatings - Enhanced Methods (Hardcover): Christopher White, Mark Nichols, James Pickett Service Life Prediction of Polymers and Coatings - Enhanced Methods (Hardcover)
Christopher White, Mark Nichols, James Pickett
R4,965 Discovery Miles 49 650 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Service Life Prediction of Polymers and Coatings: Enhanced Methods focuses on the cutting-edge science behind how plastic and polymer materials are modified by the effects of weathering, offering the latest advances in service life prediction methods. The chapters have been developed by experts based on their contributions as part of the 7th Service Life Prediction Meeting. The volume begins with the premise that it is possible to produce and design life predictions, also looking at how these predictions can be used. Subsequent chapters present new developments in service life prediction, examining the most important considerations in SLP design, timescales, and other major issues. The book also considers the current state of the field in terms of both accomplishments and areas that require significant research going forward. This is a highly valuable reference for engineers, designers, technicians, scientists and R&D professionals who are looking to develop materials, components or products for outdoor applications across a range of industries. The book also supports academic researchers, scientists and advanced students with an interest in service life, the effects of weathering, material degradation, failure analysis, or sustainability across the fields of plastics engineering, polymer science and materials science.

Transforming Universities with Digital Distance Education - The Future of Formal Learning (Hardcover): Mark Nichols Transforming Universities with Digital Distance Education - The Future of Formal Learning (Hardcover)
Mark Nichols
R4,201 Discovery Miles 42 010 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Transforming Universities with Digital Distance Education explores the ways in which higher education stakeholders can apply and leverage the benefits of online learning. Systems-wide access, scale and quality are achievable goals but require forms of teamwork and financial modelling beyond those at the instructor or programme level. This book's organisational view tackles the systems and practices that will help senior managers and decision-makers guide an entire institution away from dysfunction-incremental progress, insufficient capacity, high costs and generic products-and towards the macro-level implementation and operations of effective online pedagogies.

Sharks in the Arts - From Feared to Revered (Paperback): Vivienne Westbrook, Shaun Collin, Dean Crawford, Mark Nicholls Sharks in the Arts - From Feared to Revered (Paperback)
Vivienne Westbrook, Shaun Collin, Dean Crawford, Mark Nicholls
R1,208 Discovery Miles 12 080 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book is the most thorough exploration to date of the many ways in which a wild creature has been absorbed, reimagined and represented across the ages in all of the major art forms. The authors consider not only how the identity of sharks in the natural environment became incorporated into a cultural environment but also how sharks came to be considered the most feared creatures in the open oceans as a consequence of this incorporation. Yet sharks are especially important in helping to maintain a balance that is essential to the health of the oceans. The book begins with a treatment of the three sharks at the top of global shark-attack files from scientific, economic and environmental perspectives. Subsequent chapters engage with cultural representations of sharks in poetry, drama, art, novels, screenplay adaptations and films. Through an exploration of the ways in which sharks have been represented in human culture through the centuries, this book alerts the global community to the importance of sharks as a common cultural heritage. It aims to change perceptions of sharks so that they can become more revered than feared. The authors of this book argue that an increased understanding of sharks should lead to the development of better strategies for shark and human interactions. This book will be of great interest to researchers and students of the Environmental Humanities, Cultural History and the Arts. It is also excellent supplementary reading for courses in Zoology and Marine Science.

Lost Objects Of Desire - The Performances of Jeremy Irons (Hardcover): Mark Nicholls Lost Objects Of Desire - The Performances of Jeremy Irons (Hardcover)
Mark Nicholls
R2,832 Discovery Miles 28 320 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This first book-length critical study of Jeremy Irons concentrates on his key performances and acting style. Through the analysis of some of the major screen roles in Irons's career, such as Brideshead Revisited, The French Lieutenant's Woman, Reversal of Fortune, Swann in Love, Dead Ringers and Lolita, Mark Nicholls identifies a new masculine identity that unites them: an emblematic figure of the 1980s and 1990s presented as an alternative to the action hero or the common man. Using clear explanations of complex theoretical ideas, this book investigates Jeremy Irons's performances through the lens of sexual inversion and social rebellion, to uncover an entirely original but recognizable screen type.

A Blink Through Time (Paperback): Mark Nichols A Blink Through Time (Paperback)
Mark Nichols
R359 Discovery Miles 3 590 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Harry Sleet and Jez are not like others their age. They're runaways, and do what they must to survive: crypt delving or pawning goods, until one day it catches up with them in the form of one time-traveling golden retriever named Blink. They think they don't need adults, or the help of strangers, or even each other, until he arrives and alters their perception of true love and security. He takes them to dimensions in the future and past that both frighten and marvel them in the blink of an eye Questions and Answers: Question: Why make a time-travel book about a dog, and a golden retriever at that? I wanted to write a story where the time device is not some clunky machine, but a real flesh and blood being with feelings. Not only that, but also to show that a dog can heal wounds in ways that often get overlooked by their owners. In this day and age, we let politics divide us and keep us from loving one another, yet a dog is apolitical and will love you unconditionally if you allow it, and will also forgive you for just about anything you can think of, which I describe in this novel. Question: If you had to describe this book in one sentence, how would you go about it? Answer: Probably a mix of the best time-travel books from the 20th century: The Time Machine, A Wrinkle in Time, Time After Time, etc, with a few monsters from the future. It is hard to describe since there isn't that many time-travel books where the dog is the actual catalyst. There is a bit of everything thrown in, but in a nice, flowing way that is not jarring: comedy, fright, loss, sacrifice, and loyalty above all. Question: Isn't it hard to use a dog as a main character? Answer: Dogs, especially golden retrievers, talk to people in their own way. They send signals to us, but only if we're smart enough to open our eyes to recognize them when it happens. This one in particular is exceedingly smart, and you'll come away believing it is more than "just a dog." Question: Any movies similar to this? Answer: It is its own plot, but it is inspired by TRON, Gladiator and The Time Machine, with a pinch of Spy Kids. You won't be disappointed.
