Inspired by a true story, two teens kidnapped by an African warlord find salvation through love in a powerful and healing historical novel from the #1 bestselling author of Beneath a Scarlet Sky and The Last Green Valley.

Anthony Opoka and Florence Okori are coming of age in Uganda in the 1990s. Outstanding students, they believe in being good humans before they are kidnapped and forced into the fanatical Lord’s Resistance Army.

In a legion of young recruits, no one gets closer than Anthony to powerful messianic warlord Joseph Kony and his darkest secrets. To stay sane as he spirals through chaos, Anthony clings to his childhood lessons about being a good human. Florence’s upbringing grounds her, too, helping her keep her dreams alive even as she’s pulled deeper into the insanity of Kony’s war.

At the lowest points of their lives, certain they’ll never go home, Anthony and Florence meet by chance, fall in love, and begin to dream of surviving their captivity. They devote their lives to helping their fellow child soldiers escape bondage and return to their families and redemption by following the stars.

By turns tender, shocking, moving, desperate, and ultimately triumphant, Florence and Anthony’s story is an epic drama of humanity, a life-affirming tale, and an experience readers will never forget.

"Mark Sullivan has done it again! The Last Green Valley is a compelling and inspiring story of heroism and courage in the dark days at the end of World War II." -Kristin Hannah, #1 New York Times bestselling author From the author of the #1 bestseller Beneath a Scarlet Sky comes a new historical novel inspired by one family's incredible story of daring, survival, and triumph. In late March 1944, as Stalin's forces push into Ukraine, young Emil and Adeline Martel must make a terrible decision: Do they wait for the Soviet bear's intrusion and risk being sent to Siberia? Or do they reluctantly follow the wolves-murderous Nazi officers who have pledged to protect "pure-blood" Germans? The Martels are one of many families of German heritage whose ancestors have farmed in Ukraine for more than a century. But after already living under Stalin's horrifying regime, Emil and Adeline decide they must run in retreat from their land with the wolves they despise to escape the Soviets and go in search of freedom. Caught between two warring forces and overcoming horrific trials to pursue their hope of immigrating to the West, the Martels' story is a brutal, complex, and ultimately triumphant tale that illuminates the extraordinary power of love, faith, and one family's incredible will to survive and see their dreams realized.

The Patient as Agent of Health and Health Care - Autonomy in Patient-Centered Care for Chronic Conditions (Hardcover): Mark... The Patient as Agent of Health and Health Care - Autonomy in Patient-Centered Care for Chronic Conditions (Hardcover)
Mark Sullivan MD, PhD
R2,311 Discovery Miles 23 110 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Patient-centered care for chronic illness is founded upon the informed and activated patient, but we are not clear what this means. We must understand patients as subjects who know things and as agents who do things. Bioethics has urged us to respect patient autonomy, but it has understood this autonomy narrowly in terms of informed consent for treatment choice. In chronic illness care, the ethical and clinical challenge is to not just respect, but to promote patient autonomy, understood broadly as the patients' overall agency or capacity for action. The primary barrier to patient action in chronic illness is not clinicians dictating treatment choice, but clinicians dictating the nature of the clinical problem. The patient's perspective on clinical problems is now often added to the objective-disease perspective of clinicians as health-related quality of life (HRQL). But HRQL is merely a hybrid transitional concept between disease-focused and health-focused goals for clinical care. Truly patient-centered care requires a sense of patient-centered health that is perceived by the patient and defined in terms of the patient's vital goals. Patient action is an essential means to this patient-centered health, as well as an essential component of this health. This action is not extrinsically motivated adherence, but intrinsically motivated striving for vital goals. Modern pathophysiological medicine has trouble understanding both patient action and health. The self-moving and self-healing capacities of patients can be understood only if we understand their roots in the biological autonomy of organisms. Taking the patient as the primary perceiver and producer of health has the following policy implications: 1] Care will become patient-centered only when the patient is the primary customer of care. 2] Professional health services are not the principal source of population health, and may lead to clinical, social and cultural iatrogenic injury. 3] Social justice demands equity in health capability more than equal access to health services.

Robin Monarch is the CIA's top field asset. He is also an expert thief. Son of an American cat burglar and an Argentinian con artist, orphaned at thirteen, his is a character forged and hardened amid the ruthless slum gangs of Buenos Aires.

During a field operation in Istanbul, Monarch uncovers evidence of corruption stemming back to the very top of the CIA and Congress. This discovery - project Green Fields - is enough to make him rethink his loyalties, and go rogue. An international crisis is sparked, with Monarch at its centre.

Washington politicians, European criminals and Middle Eastern arms dealers are all hunting him - to force him to share his information, or to ensure his silence. Or, Monarch fears, both.

To survive, Monarch will have to rely on a code he learned as a starving boy, orphaned and abandoned in the slums of South America. This code is the eighteen-rule-strong La Fraternidad des Ladrones, the Brotherhood of Thieves.

This book is designed to provide mail centre managers, their supervisors, and an organisation's security personnel a framework for understanding and mitigating risks posed to the organisation by the mail and packages it receives and delivers on a daily basis. A wide range of potential threats can be introduced into an organisation by way of the mail centre. Threats that involve chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear, or explosive substances are both dangerous and disruptive. Some threats, such as white powder hoaxes and threatening letters, are merely designed to disrupt the activities of an organisation or to express dissatisfaction with a particular individual or policy. The mail centre screening and handling processes must be able to identify threats and hoaxes and eliminate or mitigate the risk they pose to the organisation, its employees, and daily operations. This book provides an introduction to and understanding of the most efficient and effective processes and procedures to handle and screen mail entering an organisation's mail processing facilities.
