The history of the Enchanted Forest is one of magical beginnings.
When it first opened in 1955, Ellicott City's storybook land became
the first children's theme park on the East Coast. Young visitors
could climb aboard rides like the Little Toot tugboat, Mother Goose
and Ali Baba or encounter animals like peacocks and burros. Upon
its closing in 1989, Marylanders who cherished memories of the
Enchanted Forest were deeply disappointed. However, many of the
park's beloved figures were moved to nearby Clark's Elioak Farm,
where they were restored and displayed to the delight of new
generations. Even today, the farm is a popular destination that
evokes the whimsical spirit of the iconic park. Local author Janet
Kusterer and Martha Anne Clark of Elioak Farm trace the park's
history through vintage images and interviews with the Harrison
family, former employees and visitors. Join Kusterer and Clark to
rediscover the magic of the Enchanted Forest.
The metrics presently being used to gauge student success have
become outdated and irrelevant. Enrollment, persistence, and degree
attainment are secondary measures, missing entirely the question of
whether students are truly achieving an effective life skillset
while attempting to complete degree or graduation fulfillment.
Student success, and the success of the education system, will be
based on collaborative and cooperative efforts by all stakeholders
as well as those with vested interests in the future economic
development of local communities as well as national development.

A chapter book for young readers seven to nine years of age Our
story begins as seven year old, Princess Emery searches for her
cats in the isolated back hallways of the castle. Investigating a
strange light at the bottom of the tower stairs, she unexpectedly
finds herself in the room of "forgotten characters". With the help
of a pirate, a ballerina, a circus ringmaster and a dragon, Emery
must discover how to help each of her new friends return to their
stories while discovering her own story's ending. The Light at the
Bottom of the Stairs is part of the Thisseldar series. However, it
is a stand-alone story. Thisseldar books do not need to be read in
order. The stories tell the adventures of Princess Emery and Prince
Ryan who live in the imaginary Kingdom of Thisseldar.

This book presents new English translations of 150 erotic poems composed in India's three classical languages: Old Tamil, Maharastri Prakit, and Sanskrit. The poems are derived from large anthological collections that date from as early as the first centruy CE to as late as the eight century. In Martha Selby's masterful translations, the poems both stand on their own as poems in English and maintain the flavours of the original verses as reflected in idiom and structure. The poems are grouped according to themes, and annotated whenever a brief gloss is necessary. The book begins with several scholarly essays on the poems and how to read them, their origin, and the languages in which they were composed. This is followed by the poems themselves.
Developmental theorists have long speculated that emotion and
cognition are inseparable components of the developmental process.
Some even suggest that the two components are fully integrated by
school age. Yet, despite considerable theoretical work describing
this interaction, relatively little empirical work has been
conducted on the subject. This volume addresses the codevelopment
of emotional and cognitive processes by integrating theoretical and
empirical work on these processes. The first part of the book
demonstrates the codependence of emotional and cognitive processes,
noting that both processes are clearly necessary for successful
regulation of thought and behavior and that children with early
adjustment difficulties often have deficits in both types of
processing. The second part considers possible neurological and
genetic mechanisms for the emotion-cognition link. Finally, the
last part explores implications for clinical and educational
research, highlighting atypical emotional and cognitive processing
and its effect on adjustment in academic and social settings.

The roadrunner, an icon of the Southwest and one of the most
beloved birds of the United States, is also one of the least
understood. In The Real Roadrunner, Martha Anne Maxon offers the
most thorough natural history of the greater roadrunner species to
date, revealing how the adaptable nature of the bird has allowed it
to survive throughout the centuries and even to thrive today, when
many other bird species are in decline. In her portrait of the
roadrunner, Maxon covers the basic features and behavioral patterns
of this bird - lineage, anatomy, habitat, and range, as well as
strategies for obtaining food, withstanding the elements, and
avoiding predators, with special attention given to the courtship
and nesting behaviors that occupy the species for three-quarters of
the year. The author has assembled and analyzed information both
from scientific and popular literature and from other researchers.
This and her years of field observation and experience with raising
young roadrunners in captivity have yielded new and intriguing
facts on the species' courtship and nesting behavior and on the
development of the young.
