This work gives a philosophical and theological account of the
belief that Scripture enables people to encounter the life-giving
reality of God. The authors examine the biblical foundations for
this belief as given in a variety of witnesses from both Testaments
and explain the philosophical and theological underpinnings of
Christian exegesis. The book sums up and makes accessible the
teaching of revered senior scholar and teacher Francis Martin and
is aimed squarely at students, assuming no advanced training in
philosophy or theology. It includes a foreword by Robert
Sokolowski.
The little-known history of how the Sahara was transformed from a
green and fertile land into the largest hot desert in the world The
Sahara is the largest hot desert in the world, equal in size to
China or the United States. Yet, this arid expanse was once a
verdant, pleasant land, fed by rivers and lakes. The Sahara
sustained abundant plant and animal life, such as Nile perch,
turtles, crocodiles, and hippos, and attracted prehistoric hunters
and herders. What transformed this land of lakes into a sea of
sands? When the Sahara Was Green describes the remarkable history
of Earth’s greatest desert—including why its climate changed,
the impact this had on human populations, and how scientists
uncovered the evidence for these extraordinary events. From the
Sahara’s origins as savanna woodland and grassland to its current
arid incarnation, Martin Williams takes us on a vivid journey
through time. He describes how the desert’s ancient rocks were
first fashioned, how dinosaurs roamed freely across the land, and
how it was later covered in tall trees. Along the way, Williams
addresses many questions: Why was the Sahara previously much
wetter, and will it be so again? Did humans contribute to its
desertification? What was the impact of extreme climatic
episodes—such as prolonged droughts—upon the Sahara’s
geology, ecology, and inhabitants? Williams also shows how plants,
animals, and humans have adapted to the Sahara and what lessons we
might learn for living in harmony with the harshest, driest
conditions in an ever-changing global environment. A valuable look
at how an iconic region has changed over millions of years, When
the Sahara Was Green reveals the desert’s surprising past to
reflect on its present, as well as its possible future.
Post-tensioning is the most versatile form of pre stressing, a
technique which enables engineers to make the most effective use of
the material properties of concrete, and so to design structural
elements which are strong, slender and efficient. Design in
post-tensioned concrete is not difficult and, if done properly, can
contribute significantly to the economy and the aesthetic qualities
of a building. Post-tensioned floors have found widespread use in
office buildings and car park structures, and are also frequently
employed in warehouses and public buildings. However, in spite of
this, most prestressed concrete texts devote comparatively little
attention to floors, concentrating instead on beam elements. This
book answers the need for a comprehensive treatment of
post-tensioned floor design.

In this addition to the Catholic Commentary on Sacred Scripture,
two well-respected New Testament scholars interpret the Gospel of
John in its historical and literary setting as well as in light of
the Church's doctrinal, liturgical, and spiritual tradition. They
unpack the wisdom of the Fourth Gospel for the intellectual and
spiritual transformation of its readers and connect the Gospel with
a range of witnesses throughout the whole history of Catholicism.
This volume, like each in the series, is supplemented by features
designed to help readers understand the Bible more deeply and use
it more effectively in teaching, preaching, evangelization, and
other forms of ministry.

In recent years, mental health professionals who have traditionally
focused on the emotional state of the individual have come to
realize that problems arise from the unique interactions between
particular individuals and environments. From necessity, they are
beginning to look at context; no longer can they place the
responsibility for mental health on the shoulders of the person
alone. Most attention has been paid to the impact of educational
and work settings, but it is clear that all life settings
contribute meaningfully to positive psychological adaptation and
must be considered in any attempt to understand a person's
difficulties. This book explores the crucial ramifications of new
theory and research in person-environment psychology for assessment
and intervention. All practitioners seeking to deliver effective
mental health services to adolescents and adults will learn from
it.

DESCRIPTION Many of the normal concerns faced by application
developers are amplified by the challenges of web-scale
concurrency, real-time performance expectations, multi-core
support, and efficiently consuming services without constantly
managing I/O blocks. Although it's possible to solve most of these
issues with existing languages and frameworks, Go is designed to
handle them right out of the box, making for a more natural and
productive coding experience. Developed at Google for its own
internal use, Go now powers dozens of nimble startups, along with
name brands like Canonical, Heroku, SoundCloud, and Mozilla, who
rely on highly performant services for their infrastructure. Go in
Action introduces the unique features and concepts of the Go
language, guiding readers from inquisitive developers to Go gurus.
It provides hands-on experience with writing real-world
applications including web sites and network servers, as well as
techniques to manipulate and convert data at incredibly high
speeds. It also goes in-depth with the language and explains the
tricks and secrets that the Go masters are using to make their
applications perform. For example, it looks at Go's powerful
reflection libraries and uses real-world examples of integration
with C code. KEY SELLING POINTS Written by Go developers Real use
cases faced in day-to-day development Get tricks and tips from
experienced Go users AUDIENCE This book assumes you're a working
developer proficient with another language like Java, Ruby, Python,
C#, or C++. ABOUT THE TECHNOLOGY Go is a powerful language that is
gaining rapid adoption by companies that want to write fast systems
while allowing their developers to use modern programming
languages. Go development is sponsored and curated by Google, but
has contributors from around the globe.
In this book, the author describes in simple, non-technical terms
the adventures he has experienced during his work as an earth
scientist in some of the remote parts of the arid and semi-arid
world. His aim in writing this concise account of some of the work
he has been involved in over the past fifty years is to try to
convey to the non-specialist some of the excitement and fun
involved in fieldwork in the drier regions of the world. His
studies of the soils, landforms and the recent geological history
of arid and semi-arid regions have taken Martin Williams to some
remarkable places in Africa, Asia, Australia and the Middle East.
Not only are the landscapes themselves often stunningly beautiful,
but the contact with people from quite different backgrounds and
cultures has been an enriching experience. His work has taken him
to places far off the beaten track, whether it be the rugged
mountains of Ethiopia and northern China, the sandy deserts of the
Sahara and Rajasthan, or the great river valleys of Somalia,
central India and the Nile. The chapters that follow are not
intended to form a coherent chronological narrative, although they
do appear in rough chronological order. They should rather be
viewed as vignettes or brief evocative descriptions, much as in the
discursive tradition of the wandering Irish storytellers. Acting on
the principle that it is not necessary to be solemn to be serious,
the author aims to entertain as well as to instruct.
In May 1944, 40,000 Polish soldiers attacked and captured the
hilltops of Monte Cassino, bringing to a close the largest,
bloodiest battle fought by the western Allies in the Second World
War. Days later the Allied armies marched into Rome seizing the
first Axis capital. No-one in 1939 could have foreseen an entire
Polish Corps engaged on the Italian Front. Most had been held
prisoner in the USSR following Polands defeat and their release by
Stalin was only achieved through the intense negotiations of
British and Polish politicians generals, notably Sikorski and
Anders,. The Polish Army was evacuated to Iran in 1942 and
subsequently incorporated into the British Army as the Polish II
Corps. Their ultimate post-war fate was shamefully ignored until
too late. This book, which charts the extraordinary wartime story
of the exiled Polish Army in the east, makes extensive use of
undiscovered archive material. It reveals in depth the relations
between the British and Polish General Staffs and the never ending
hardships of the Polish soldiers.
Dynamics is increasingly being identified by consulting engineers
as one of the key skills which needs to be taught in civil
engineering degree programs. This is driven by the trend towards
lighter, more vibration-prone structures, the growth of business in
earthquake regions, the identification of new threats such as
terrorist attack and the increased availability of sophisticated
dynamic analysis tools. Martin Williams presents this short,
accessible introduction to the area of structural dynamics. He
begins by describing dynamic systems and their representation for
analytical purposes. The two main chapters deal with linear
analysis of single (SDOF) and multi-degree-of-freedom (MDOF)
systems, under free vibration and in response to a variety of
forcing functions. Hand analysis of continuous systems is covered
briefly to illustrate the key principles. Methods of calculation of
non-linear dynamic response is also discussed. Lastly, the key
principles of random vibration analysis are presented - this
approach is crucial for wind engineering and is increasingly
important for other load cases. An appendix briefly summarizes
relevant mathematical techniques. Extensive use is made of worked
examples, mostly drawn from civil engineering (though not
exclusively - there is considerable benefit to be gained from
emphasizing the commonality with other branches of engineering).
This introductory dynamics textbook is aimed at upper level civil
engineering undergraduates and those starting an M.Sc. course in
the area.
This book presents readers with scholarship on public celebrations
and popular culture throughout Mexican history. Leading scholars
from the Americas and Great Britain discuss aspects of Mexico's
popular culture from the seventeenth century to the present. The
vast range of Mexican expression is examined, including Corpus
Christi celebrations, New Spain, stone murals, and folk theater.
Filling a need that becomes ever more pressing, this volume
provides fresh insights.
