Cliff Vermont's wish for his best friend, Jamaal, came true. The
Yellow team advanced to the county basketball championship game.
Just getting there was not good enough. Jamaal wanted to win the
whole tournament in front of the whole county with coaches and
scouts in the stands. As game day nears, a problem arises at home
and Cliff has to decide between family and basketball. The story
takes numerous twists and turns as both Cliff and Jamaal have to
deal with bully, Bumper Johnson, as well as Cliff's nemesis, Bette
London. Cliff's brother, Sam, and sister, Lisa, are there to cheer
on Cliff and to help him overcome the obstacles of being a 12
year-old kid.
Baseball Chronicles: Articles on Youth Coaching is a compilation of
twenty-one articles Coach Marty Schupak has written over the course
of his twenty-two years of coaching youth baseball, exploring the
most common and pressing issues facing youth coaches & parents
today. Featured in these articles are both on-field and off-field
topics that are designed to help the youth coach run a successful
season, whether it is handling the team's parents or reviewing
pitching techniques for youth athletes. Based on Coach Marty's
experiences, the subjects discussed in the following twenty-one
articles are overlooked by the majority of coaches, but could be
the secret to success.
Basketball Chronicles: Articles on Youth Coaching is a compilation
of twenty-six articles I have written about coaching basketball,
especially youth basketball. I have been coaching youth sports for
twenty-five years. In addition to coaching basketball, I have
coached soccer, baseball, and softball. When coaching, I have found
that some drills and techniques will work with some teams and in
certain years, but may not work with a whole new group of players
in another season. As coaches, we have to learn to be flexible and
adapt. These articles will tend to sound like a biography about my
experiences in basketball, but I have related many events in my
lifetime from watching basketball to coaching this great game.
Featured in these articles are both on-field and off-field topics
that are designed to help the youth coach run a successful season,
whether it is handling the team's parents or reviewing shooting
drills for youth athletes. Based on my experiences, the subjects
discussed in the following articles are overlooked by many coaches,
but could be the secret to success. A number of years ago I
produced a baseball video The 59 Minute Baseball Practice, which
was a compilation of drills that became very popular for youth
baseball coaches. My main goal in making that video is very similar
to my goal in writing this book. I want coaches to put on their
creative hats and invent their own drills, inbound plays, defensive
schemes, and more.
If Cliff Vermont had only slid home, his team would have already
clinched the championship. Now the Blue Hens find themselves in a
third and deciding playoff game with everything on the line. Cliff
not only has to deal with the burden of his baseball blunder, but
also the pressure from his teammates and classmates as he prepares
for pitching the biggest game of his life. The days leading up to
the big game, Cliff learns what it takes to navigate through the
strange and often turbulent world of adolescence, both on and off
the field, with the help of his younger brother, Sam, and his best
friend, Jamaal.
