BOOK OF THE YEAR - EVENING STANDARD, THE OBSERVER and THE TIMES
‘Beautifully written and completely convincing’ The Observer
‘An excellent novel – riotous and abundant, full of vivid,
dirty life’ The Guardian TO LOVE IS TO FALL . . . On a rooftop in
Elizabethan London two worlds collide. Shay is a messenger-girl and
trainer of hawks who sees the future in the patterns of birds.
Nonesuch is the dark star of the city's fabled child theatre scene,
as famous as royalty yet lowly as a beggar. Together they create
The Ghost Theatre: a troupe staging magical plays in London's
hidden corners. As their hallucinatory performances incite
rebellion among the city's outcasts, the pair's relationship sparks
and burns against a backdrop of the plague and a London in flames.
Their growing fame sweeps them up into the black web of the
Elizabethan court, where Shay and Nonesuch discover that if they
fly too high, a fall is sure to come… Fantastical and
captivating, The Ghost Theatre charts the rise and dramatic
destruction of a dream born from love and torn apart by betrayal.
'Dramatic and gripping... a breathless journey of hope, beauty,
wonder, tragedy, and the power of theatre' Isabelle Schuler 'Rich
and evocative with shades of Angela Carter' Ever Dundas 'A story of
rebellion and magic, of mysticism and broken love in the streets
and theatres and rooftops of Elizabethan London. Beautifully
written, delicate and sad. I'm still haunted by it' Mariana
Enriquez 'Osman brings the underworld of Elizabethan London to life
with its child theatres, rioting apprentices and anarchic world,
its jumble of squalor and glamour... larger-than-life heroes raise
child rebellions; pursue exalted, treacherous love affairs; see the
future in a flock of birds. Glorious!' Sandra Newman ‘Hauntingly
beautiful … Thrilling and thought-provoking’ The Independent

Horror in which a clinical trial at a remote facility goes terribly
wrong. Among those who sign up to test ProSyntrex's latest drug
Pro9 are Adam (Aneurin Barnard), Joni (Alex Reid), Carmen (Skye
Lourie) and Jed (Oliver Coleman). The trial is highly secret, with
no-one, including the staff who administer injections, aware of who
is receiving the drug and who is in the placebo group. Shortly
after the trial begins it becomes clear that something has gone
wrong. There are unexplained disappearances, bizarre silhouettes
and screaming from behind locked doors. Locked inside the facility,
unaware of the true nature of events, the surviving patients and
staff must band together to try and find a way out of the
nightmare.
Strategic communication as a research field and a professional practice
is becoming increasingly relevant for organizations. Bringing together
contributions from almost 60 leading international scholars, this
dynamic Research Handbook on Strategic Communication is a timely
contribution to a vivid and developing academic field.
Divided into three key parts – fundamentals, perspectives, and
processes – the Research Handbook provides a holistic overview of
target-oriented communication in and between organizations and society.
The Handbook begins by addressing core issues in the discipline,
introducing theories of communication, strategy, propaganda, and the
public sphere. Chapters further explore strategic communication from a
range of institutional, democratic, spatial, gendered, professional,
and technological perspectives. The final section covers an extensive
array of strategic communication processes, from corporate branding,
communication management, and public diplomacy to corporate social
responsibility, political communication, and social media.
Offering an advanced overview of relevant theories, concepts, and
methods in strategic communication, this comprehensive Research
Handbook will be an essential resource for graduate students and
scholars of communication studies, sociology, social psychology,
organizational theory, marketing, and public relations. Practitioners
will benefit from its combination of theoretical and practical insights.
Providing an in-depth and cutting-edge investigation into the rise
of Asian research practices and paradigms, Mats Benner examines how
this rise has been accomplished, what effects it has had, and how
it has shaped universities across seven Asian countries. Broad and
comprehensive, chapters analyse the research and education systems
of China, Hong Kong, India, Japan, Macau, Singapore, South Korea,
and Taiwan, considering how their universities operate, their
models and policy priorities. Benner studies the historical, social
and political causes behind the variations between these countries,
before highlighting the effects of globalization on education,
research and innovation. Assessing whether we are witnessing a
tectonic shift in how and where education and research are carried
out, the book ultimately concludes that regional disparities will
remain, but that practices and priorities are becoming increasingly
similar in the process of globalization. With Asia showing an
increasingly marked presence in research and in scientific and
technological capability, this timely book will be invaluable to
university policy makers looking to innovate their education and
research models, alongside students and scholars interested in
Asian development, innovation and technology.

This unique book explores what subregions are in a European context
and what roles they fulfil in relation to the European integration
process, exploring how subregional cooperation and integration in
Europe largely take place in the shadow of the European integration
process. Mats Braun examines how subregions fulfil two specific
functions in relation to the European integration process: they
compensate for the fact that countries are connected to the
European Union in different ways, and they facilitate cooperation
in fields where the EU has failed to do so. The book analyses two
of the European subregions in detail, the Nordics and the Visegrad,
and explores how these groups gain legitimacy. Braun suggests that
Nordic cooperation is based on perceptions of shared norms
relating, among other things, to peace, while the Visegrad Group
has become widely known only in the aftermath of the migration
crisis and is now developing a new narrative based on protecting
Europe. Elaborating on a theoretical framework based on
postfunctionalism, this book will be critical reading for scholars
and students of European politics and policy, international
relations and regional studies. Its focus on the two case studies
will also be beneficial for policy makers and analysts interested
in the politics of the Nordic and Visegrad countries.
Science has become a central political concern with massive
increases in public investment, but resources are embedded in a
complex web of expectations that vary between countries and
regions. This book outlines an insightful understanding of science
policy as both concerning the governance of science itself through
priority-setting, funding, organization and articulation with
polity, society and economy, and its extra-organizational
connections in terms of higher education, innovation and national
policy concerns. The New Global Politics of Science examines how
science and innovation have become truly global, and the
consequences of this for scientists, policymakers and citizens.
This book provides an overview of how research policies have
evolved in different countries and contexts. It also examines how
science research has been aligned with nation-building and
state-formation, enmeshed in meta-governance, and how this relates
to economic growth. Analysing how knowledge policies have been
forged in their specific historical and geographical settings, this
book will be an invaluable tool for scholars and policymakers in
the fields of science, innovation and public policy.
The so-called ?'spatial turn?' in the social sciences has led to an
increased interest in what can be called the spatialities of power,
or the ways in which power as a medium for achieving goals is
related to where it takes place. This unique and intriguing
Handbook argues that the spatiality of power is never singular and
easily modeled according to straightforward theoretical
bullet-points, but instead is best approached as plural,
contextually emergent and relational. The Handbook on the
Geographies of Power consists of a series of cutting edge chapters
written by a diverse range of leading geographers working both
within and beyond political geography. It is organized thematically
into the main areas in which contemporary work on the geographies
of power is concentrated: bodies, economy, environment and energy,
and war. The Handbook maintains a careful connection between theory
and empirics, making it a valuable read for students, researchers
and scholars in the fields of political and human geography. It
will also appeal to social scientists more generally who are
interested in contemporary conceptions of power. Contributors

Documentary about the career of Britpop band Oasis. Growing up on a
Manchester council estate, brothers Noel and Liam Gallagher started
their journey as Oasis in 1991. They hit the peak of their fame in
1996 as they played their home ground of Manchester City and two
consecutive nights at Knebworth. The band went on to become one of
the most successful acts of the time, achieving seven number one
albums and 24 top ten singles. Throughout their career the band
found themselves the subject of many controversies including
several legal battles over plagiarism as well as being outspoken
about their views on politics and the media. After a very public
split in 2009 the brothers went their separate ways leaving behind
hours of footage put together in this documentary by director Mat
Whitecross.

Elgaronline thanks to generous funding support from The Swedish
Governmental Agency For Innovation Systems, Vinnova. This timely
book expertly examines ongoing pressing issues in the modern world
namely, an unstable economic climate, political turmoil and the
environmental crisis. It takes a unique look at how science,
technology and innovation could contribute towards the creation of
a smarter and more resilient society by allowing more inclusive
approaches into how science is integrated. With an insightful
global interdisciplinary approach, Smart Policies for Societies in
Transition combines in-depth theoretical analysis whilst also
providing a reflective look at broadening the scope of science and
innovation policy in order to understand the critical issues and
challenges. Chapters illustrate historical practices and events,
and discuss how the move to smart politics and the linking of
boundaries from a social, ecological and global viewpoint leads to
fewer but more creative policies. With its retrospective and
forward-thinking perspectives, this book will be an excellent
resource for academics wanting to rethink their approach to science
and innovation governance, whilst scholars will find the
collaborative method for combining policy analysis with theory of
policymaking and governance informative and illuminating.

This book deals with risk management and the organisation of
banking in Swedish savings banks alongside the development in other
European countries. The period of analysis begins with the
establishment of the first savings banks in 1820 and ends in 1910.
During this period, banking developed as a well-functioning system
for deposits and credits. The book focuses on this development from
a theoretical perspective connected to risk management and the role
of trust and legitimacy in credits and savings. The analysis deals
with the overall development of the Swedish banking system and the
role of savings banks as well as bank connections with different
groups of customers. Of interest to financial historians,
academics, and researchers, it also analyses the role of insider
lending and the practical aspects of granting credits, such as the
use of collaterals and the level of interest rates to compensate
higher risks.
