Sie ziehen Grenzen als nationalstaat- lich verfaBte Gesellschaften in ihrem politischen Institutionensystem, in ihren wirtschaftlichen und sozialen Strukturen. Diese Grenzleistungen werden durch viele Prozesse gesttitzt oder in Frage gestellt. Weltweite Migration und die Formierung westlicher Nationalstaaten sind grenzUberschreitende und in der Moderne. Beide Prozesse gewinnen neue grenzproduzierende Prozesse Qualitaten durch die zunehmende Eigendynamik internationaler Strukturen. Internationale Migration wird nationalstaatlich verfaBten Gesellschaften immer starker zum Problem. Mit der Einwanderung von immer mehr Men- schen aus immer we iter entfernteren Gegenden der Welt, verandert sich die Position des Nationalstaates innerhalb der Weltgesellschaft. Nationalstaaten reagieren darauf mit der Restrukturierung ihrer Grenzen, die Offnung aber auch SchlieBung bedeuten kann. Staatsbtirgerschaft, als Verleihung politischer Partizipationsrechte, ist ei- ne interne Grenzstruktur des Nationalstaates. 1m ProzeB der Offnung gegen- tiber immer mehr Gruppen innerhalb des Staatsvolkes kam es zu einer SchlieBung tiber ethnische Kriterien gegentiber Einwanderung. Gleichzeitig es zu einer Ausdifferenzierung der externen Grenzleistungen: Migra- kommt tionspolitiken werden implementiert und Selektionskorridore fur Migranten ausgebildet. Diese Selektionskorridore etablieren stabile transnationale Stro- me, die Nationalstaaten immer starker in weltweite Migrationssysteme inte- grieren.
