This book presents thoughts on and experiences with the introduction of Theme-centered Interaction (TCI) into academia. TCI is a systematic didactic, 'living learning' approach originally developed by social psychologist and pedagogue Ruth C. Cohn. The book explains and introduces the method, attitude and theory of TCI to a broader, higher education audience and relates it to such questions as: How does a teacher in academia achieve a lively and engaging atmosphere in their seminars? How do young academics as leaders-to-be learn how to act socially sustainably in groups? Using practical examples, the book shows how TCI can work in higher education to achieve participation and integration, reflectivity and humane connectedness of academic teachers and students, and professional development of senior and junior academics.
Religious and cultural diversity are increasingly visible today. At the same time, increased fear of the "other" has manifested, particularly of the Islamic religion. Islam today is considered a "problematic" religion. This attitude yields many challenges in universities and schools, particularly when it comes to religious education. The Institute for Islamic Theology and Religious Education and the Catholic Religious Education Department at the University of Innsbruck are addressing these challenges, having spearheaded a program of intensive cooperation in teacher education - including courses on pedagogy, religious didactics, internships, and evidence-based learning processes in schools and universities. This research and teaching collaboration lacked an appropriate framework. This book provides a solid basis for interreligious pedagogy and didactics. Authentic interreligious cooperation begins by promoting intra- and inter-religious self-confidence and self-understanding. This required countless discussions among the authors, which yielded distinct viewpoints as well as commonalities. In this way the anthropological starting point for this book emerged and is expanded through a theological perspective on religious education and didactics. Various approaches and attitudes are developed and examined, including contingency sensibility, to support the competent planning, management, and evaluation of educational processes in pluralistic and heterogeneous fields.
Preachers, group leaders, teachers, and all who are serious about understanding and spreading the Christian message will benefit from the material in this book. Christian theologians, in their concern for eternal truths, have sometimes been slow to recognize the importance of how communication occurs. Yet in a religion with revelation as its very core, it is crucial to be aware of new communication technology, understand how the message is shared, and identify barriers to communication. The principles discussed are distilled from a series of conferences that brought pastors and theologians together to discuss the core of their faith and how, in a globalized world, faith can be discussed intelligently. The helpful, field-tested chapters include useful diagrams and lists as well as ample questions for group reflection.
