In this "handbook for disruptors", The Geek Way reveals a new way to get big things done. It will change the way you think about work, teams, projects, and culture, and give you the insight and tools you need to harness our human superpowers of learning and cooperation.
What is “being geeky?” It’s being a perennially curious person, one who's not afraid to tackle hard problems and embrace unconventional solutions. McAfee shows how the geeks have created a new culture based around four norms: science, ownership, speed, and openness. The geek way seems odd at first. It's not deferential to experts, fond of planning and process, afraid of mistakes, or obsessed with "winning." But it explains everything from why Montessori babies turn out to be creative tinkerers to how newcomers are disrupting industry after industry (and still just getting started).
When all four norms are in place, a culture emerges that is freewheeling, fast-moving, egalitarian, evidence-driven, argumentative, and autonomous. Why does the geek way work so much better? McAfee provides an original answer: because it taps into humanity's superpower, which is our ability to cooperate intensely and learn rapidly. By providing insights from the young discipline of cultural evolution, McAfee shows that when we come together under the right conditions, we quickly figure out how to build reusable spaceships and self-correcting organizations. Under the wrong conditions, though, we create bureaucracy, chronic delays, cultures of silence, and the other classic dysfunctions of the Industrial Era.
Mixing cutting-edge science, history, analysis, and stories that show the geek way in action, McAfee offers a new way to see the world and empowering tools for seizing the big opportunities of today and tomorrow.
We’re living in a time of amazing technological innovation, but we’re not paying enough attention to one of the most important innovations of all – one that’s going to be a wellspring of progress for a long time to come.
This innovation is to the company itself – a new model is being pioneered by geeks who have instituted a radical new mindset that has shifted the paradigm entirely on what a business can – and should – be.
They do not follow the rules of the Industrial era, with their hierarchies and bureaucratic ways of thinking. They do not follow the principles preached in business schools since the dawn of time. They have all dedicated themselves to approaching business as a geek would – through trial and error, egalitarianism, evidence and stress-testing ideas in a group setting rather than relying on the boss’s instincts. McAfee's groundbreaking exploration of this emerging phenomenon gets to the heart of the tectonic shifts taking place all over the business world.
The future will be ‘geek’. By investigating contemporary research in psychology, economics and behavioural sciences, as well as first-hand accounts from the ‘geek’ leaders of today, McAfee shows us how this new age will transform everything we think we know about how business is done, now and into the future.
The musical dinosaurs from the Great Valley are back for another
song-filled adventure. Littlefoot (voice of Alec Medlock) dreams
that he has found a land filled with brontosauruses like him. When
he tells his grandparents (Kenneth Mars and Miriam Flynn) about the
dream, they take it as a sign that they should set out and look for
the land Littlefoot is describing. After many days of travelling,
they are thrilled to discover a new world where longneck dinosaurs
are in abundance. Then, when they run into his long-lost father,
Bron (Kiefer Sutherland), who vanished before Littlefoot was born,
the little brontosaurus is faced with a life-changing decision:
stay behind with his newly rediscovered father, or go back with the
grandparents who have cared for him all his life and be reunited
with his friends.
Unlike some other reproductions of classic texts (1) We have not
used OCR(Optical Character Recognition), as this leads to bad
quality books with introduced typos. (2) In books where there are
images such as portraits, maps, sketches etc We have endeavoured to
keep the quality of these images, so they represent accurately the
original artefact. Although occasionally there may be certain
imperfections with these old texts, we feel they deserve to be made
available for future generations to enjoy.
We’re living in a time of amazing innovation, but we’re not paying enough attention to one of the most important of all: the innovation to the company itself. Now, bestselling author of The Second Machine Age, Andrew McAfee, explains how engineers and geeks are changing the world of business – with extraordinary results.
A new model is being pioneered by geeks; a radical new mindset that has shifted the paradigm entirely on what a business can – and should – be. They do not follow the rules of the Industrial era, with their hierarchies and bureaucratic ways of thinking. They do not follow the principles preached in business schools since the dawn of time. They have all dedicated themselves to approaching business as a geek would: through trial and error, egalitarianism, evidence and stress-testing ideas in a group setting – rather than relying on the boss’s instincts.
By investigating and surveying the contemporary research in psychology, economics and the behavioural sciences, as well as first-hand accounts from the ‘geek’ leaders of today, McAfee's groundbreaking exploration of this emerging phenomenon gets to the heart of the tectonic shifts taking place all over the business world. We have entered a new age. And this age will transform how we achieve great things, now and into the future. The future is geek.

This book is a plea for a sympathetic approach to the conservation
and repair of traditional stone buildings. These beautiful
buildings are in danger of disappearing from the landscape because
they are not yet properly understood. Here is a book about saving
them by applying traditional techniques in a sympathetic manner,
using materials and methods that are in harmony with their nature.
Patrick McAfee, a stone-mason, conservation consultant and author
of the bestselling Irish Stone Walls, shows how traditional stone
buildings were originally constructed; he outlines the traditional
techniques, tells how the stone was worked and details the proper
methods of repair and maintenance. As well as dealing with stone,
the book also covers lime mortars and other traditional finishes.
Includes a survey of stone buildings world-wide. Much of the
information is practical, hands-on, and intended for the
enthusiastic householder as well as the more experienced builder,
with step-by-step instructions from an acknowledged expert.
Originally delivered as a series of lectures at the Brooklyn
Institute of Arts and Sciences, this 1912 volume of essays examines
the profound impact the King James version of the Bible exerted
upon not only the literature of the English language but upon the
very civilization of Britain and its English-speaking offspring,
the United States of America. From the impetus that brought about
the King James translation and its particular unique
characteristics to the Bible itself as a literary work and its
influence upon writers such as Milton, Thackeray, Dickens,
Stevenson, Poe, Hawthorne, Thoreau, and others, this is an erudite
and illuminating survey of the power and prevalence of the King
James Bible in the social and cultural lives of the
English-speaking world. CLELAND BOYD MCAFEE (1866-1944) was a
professor at Chicago's McCormick Theological Seminary. In addition
to numerous popular hymns, he also wrote the books The Growing
Church, Studies in the Sermon on the Mount, and Ministerial
Practices: Some Fraternal Suggestions.
LoveSex and Relationships introduces a pleasure-focused rather than
reproductive model of sex, exploring how our brains, minds, bodies,
and emotions interact to create our experience of sexuality. This
book challenges the cultural commodification of sex and sexuality,
and it encourages the reader to experience 'being sexual' rather
than 'doing sex' or 'looking sexy'. This is crucial to our
development of sexual self-esteem, particularly in the digital era
of pornography, dating and hookup apps. Bringing the material of
the first edition up to date, chapters include anatomical diagrams
and social commentary with a focus on trauma and Polyvagal Theory.
Diversity and cultural changes are also addressed, including a more
expansive understanding of gender identity, and greater awareness
of the impact of power and rank in sexual relationships. Lastly,
each chapter features a new partnered exercise alongside every solo
exercise from the first edition. The book's accessible language
makes it a valuable resource for sex and relationship therapists
and trainees, general mental health and sex/relationship
professionals, and clients themselves.
How can managers effectively deal with difficult and troublesome
employee behaviors in order to enhance productivity and employee
morale? The authors answer this question by discussing an array of
common disruptive behaviors. These include insubordination, theft,
substance abuse, absenteeism, interpersonal conduct, horseplay,
assault, fighting, smoking, gambling, sleeping, and appearance
problems. The authors present the major principles managers need to
follow when taking disciplinary action, describe several broad
areas of empolyment law, and lay out the steps a manager should
follow when using a progressive penalty system.
When discussing each topic, the authors provide managers with
essential background information as well as relevant court cases
and arbitrator decisions. They give examples of actual company
policies and spell out specific recommendations and steps to follow
when confronted with disruptive behavior. This blend of information
will allow managers in a variety of work settings to solve behavior
problems and avoid the pitfalls often associated with taking
disciplinary actions.
The Zechariah Tradition and the Gospel of Matthew is a
comprehensive study of the ways Matthew utilizes Zechariah texts
and traditions. Against the background of materials from Qumran,
and apocryphal and deuterocanonical writings Matthew's explicit
citations of Zechariah are examined; the influence of Zechariah
elsewhere in the First Gospel is identified; and the extent to
which Matthew alludes to characteristic Zechariah themes, alone or
in combination with other prophetic traditions, is explored.
Zechariah traditions appear in Matthew's distinctive materials, as
well as in texts Matthew has transmitted, or altered, from Mark and
Q. The impact of Zech 9-14 is not limited to the Passion Narrative
but extends through Matthew's Infancy and Galilean healing
narratives, as well; important concepts from Zech 1-8 are also
discerned in the Infancy and Passion Narratives. Moss works through
the canonical order of Matthew; this enables readers to appreciate
the cumulative effect of Zechariah's influence at each stage of the
Gospel story. Two appendices, one arranged according to Zechariah
and the other to Matthew, list possible references to Zechariah in
Matthew. This monograph is useful for Matthean studies and it is an
insightful investigation of how one set of Old Testamental
traditions are appropriated in one canonical Gospel and in the New
Testament.
