Child Development and Education bridges the gap between theory and
practice, showing those who teach and care for infants, children,
and adolescents how to apply developmental research and theory to
everyday practice. More so than any other text, Child Development
and Education not only describes developmental phenomena--for
infants through late adolescence--but also faciliates observations
of and analyses of what children say, do, and create, ensuring that
educators can make informed decisions that meet children's and
adolescent's needs. New to the fifth edition is a sensitivity to
the cultural and bioecological nature of development. New features
of the text situate children and adolescents in the contexts of
their upbringing and articulate the implications of these
experiences for educators and other professionals. Illustrated is
the diverse nature of development and how it is influenced by
social, environmental, and cultural contexts. Also new to this
edition is support for teacher licensure preparation. Teacher
candidates are alerted to developmental concepts and theorists they
need to know, and are provided practice test questions and case
studies to review, demonstrating for them how to prepare for their
licensure exam.
This edited book significantly contributes to the knowledge on how
to address gang problems from a broad community perspective, which
takes into account criminal justice agencies, social service
providers, and community leaders, along with police, who have
implemented collaborative anti-gang policies and practices. As
community-wide efforts become more common, it is increasingly
important to investigate effective strategies to address social
problems. Beyond Suppression: Community Strategies to Reduce Gang
Violence explores a demonstration project of one state's efforts to
reduce gang and youth violence through use of a comprehensive
initiative, the Comprehensive Gang Model (CGM). The relevance of
the CGM as a conceptual framework to guide gang policy and practice
is illustrated throughout the book, and tailored gang reduction
strategies derived from that framework and rooted in the ecological
constitution of communities are showcased. The chapters highlight
implementation strategies employed by various communities using a
case study methodology that assists in garnering an in-depth
perspective of implementation issues and key dimensions of the CGM.
This book answers important questions about how communities
operationalize the CGM. The results of these investigations are
important for scholars, learners, and practitioners who seek to
address gang violence using a customized response.
A beautiful collection of 100 pieces of writing - poems, prose,

As its title implies, this book by three distinguished scholars
puts a cultural perspective at the front and center of issues
relating to current approaches to managing complex organizations.
It does this by covering the most recent relevant findings by
researchers from around the world and, most importantly,
interpreting those findings in ways that provide useful guidelines
and approaches for those in positions of organizational
responsibility. For anyone studying or practicing management in
challenging global-oriented contexts this volume is essential - and
highly interesting - reading.' - Lyman W. Porter, University of
California, Irvine, US'This book is a tour-de-force and a must-read
for any scholar and practitioner who is interested in managing
global organizations. From such topics as how to motivate, reward,
lead, manage conflict, and structure work in different cultural
contexts, the authors provide critical insights into how culture
shapes all aspects of organizational behavior and a compelling
vision of the future that awaits multinational and global
organizations. Bravo to the authors for providing the field with a
gold mine of information on managing organizations across
cultures!' - Michele Joy Gelfand, University of Maryland, College
Park, US 'This book represents the very best of academic as well as
field intensive thinking about cultural and global issues in
organizations. While many people have focused on cultural and
global issues in the past several decades, the field has largely
lacked a systematic review and analysis of these issues in specific
contexts. What Bhagat, Triandis and McDevitt offer the reader is a
wonderfully comprehensive analysis of key issues of culture in
organizations. This is absolutely a must reading for every serious
scholar of global organizations.' - Chris Earley, Purdue
University, US The globalization of business is a reality that
confronts organizations of all sizes from different nations and
cultures. This book serves as a comprehensive guide for
understanding the nature of cultural variations that affect
important aspects of organizational behavior. The authors expertly
cover all of the relevant functions that managers are concerned
with in the process of managing global organizations. Various
research-based theories and findings are discussed to explain the
significance of cultural variations in these phenomena. Readers
will gain a clear perspective on how cultural variations have the
potential to affect organizational functioning and effectiveness
across national borders. A mastery of the fundamental concepts and
issues covered in this book will enable future managers of
multinational and global corporations to become more effective in
dealing with people in different countries and enhance
organizational effectiveness on an ongoing basis. Scholars and
students will also find this book a path-breaking resource for
understanding this important topic.

America won the Revolutionary War against all odds. They were
outnumbered and outmaneuvered for the majority of the war, but a
few strategic wins turned the tables. One such strategic encounter
occurred after the war was won-in Danbury, the British planned a
massive raid on Danbury's magazine of stores in April 1777. Robert
McDevitt outlines the leading causes and comprehensive history of
this tumultuous time from a British viewpoint. As one phase of the
Bicentennial observation, The American Revolution Bicentennial
Commission of Connecticut has authorized scholars in a wide range
of study to write a series of monographs on the broadly defined
Revolutionary Era of 1763 to 1787. These monographs [appeared]
yearly beginning in 1973 through 1980. Emphasis is placed upon the
birth of the nation, rather than on the winning of independence on
the field of battle.

Alfred Hitchcock's career spanned more than five decades, during
which he directed more than 50 films, many of them indisputable
classics: Notorious, Strangers on a Train, Rear Window, Vertigo,
North by Northwest, and Psycho, among others. In A Year of
Hitchcock: 52 Weeks with the Master of Suspense, authors Jim
McDevitt and Eric San Juan provide a comprehensive examination of
Hitchcock's film-to-film development, spanning from the beginning
of his career in silents to his final film in 1976, including his
work on two French propaganda shorts he directed during World War
II and segments he directed for Alfred Hitchcock Presents.
Organized into 52 chapters and arranged in chronological order, the
book invites readers to spend a year with the director's most
notable works, all of which are available on DVD. Each film is
examined in the context of Hitchcock's career, as the authors
consider the themes central to his work; discuss each film's
production; comment on the cast, script, and other aspects of the
film; and assess the film's value to the Hitchcock viewer. From The
Lodger to Family Plot, 68 works directed by Hitchcock are analyzed.
Each analysis is supplemented by key film facts, trivia, awards, a
guide to his cameos, a filmography, and a listing of available DVD
releases. Whether readers decide to undertake the journey through
his films one week at a time or pick and choose at their
discretion, A Year of Hitchcock will open the eyes of any viewer
who wants to better understand this director's evolution as an
artist.
Deep Down Things: Essays on Catholic Culture explores common
threads that characterize Catholicism. The contributors look
successively at: Catholic culture and everyday life of the parish
and of work, at Catholic culture and the imaginative life of poets
and fiction writers, and at Catholic culture and postmodern life
where individual conscience, skepticism, and relativism challenge
Church authority and faith itself. They do so while looking for
foundational components that persist and comprise a culture that
Catholics recognize regardless of their diverse ethnicity,
geographic location, or historical epoch. The authors of this
collection have aimed to inspire both Catholics and non-Catholics
alike, inside and outside the academic community, to deepen their
own knowledge and appreciation of the Christian tradition generally
and Catholic culture particularly. The authors hope to encourage
sincere and open dialogue about Catholic culture (in the best
tradition of Catholic thought) both to further the inquiry after
truth and to enhance fruitful reflection upon Catholic culture and
its contributions over time and across cultures.
This is the first systematic study of modern China's military
campaigns and the actual fighting conducted by the People's
Liberation Army since the founding of the People's Republic. It
provides a general overview of the evolution of PLA military
doctrine, and then focuses on major combat episodes from the civil
war with the Nationalists to the last significant combat in Vietnam
in 1979, in addition to navy and air operations through 1999. In
contrast to the many works on the specifics and hardware of China's
military modernization, this book discusses such topics as military
planning, command, and control; fighting and politics; combat
tactics and performance; technological catch-up and doctrinal
flexibility; the role of Mao Zedong; scale and typologies of
fighting; and deterrence. The contributors include scholars from
Mainland China, Taiwan, and the United States, who draw from a
wealth of fresh archival sources.

We are alone in the universe. After 1,000 years of searching humankind believes there is simply nothing out there. Space is a magnificent, but sterile wilderness. That's the received wisdom, anyway. But a new expedition investigating a mysteriously aborted mission 27 years earlier, is about to turn that wisdom on its head. 'Jack McDevitt is that splendid rarity, a storyteller first and a science fiction writer second . In his ability to absolutely rivet the reader, it seems to me that he is the logical heir to Isaac Asimov and Arthur C. Clarke. If you've never read McDevitt before, you couldn't find a better book to start with than 'Slow Lightening', a nail-biting neo-Gothic tale that blends mystery, horror, and a fascinating look at how first contact with an utterly alien species might happen. I simply couldn't put it down – I was up until past midnight and loving every minute of it. Kim Brandywine is one of McDevitt's most engaging characters, both real and appealing. Snatch this baby up, all right? You're going to live it even if you think you don't like science fiction. You might even want to drop me a thank-you note for the tip before racing out to your local bookstore to pick up the Jack McDevitt backlist.' STEPHEN KING
The 1970s saw a change in the fortunes of the Scottish national
side. After a gap of 16 years World Cup qualification was achieved
for the finals in West Germany in 1974. Credited as the only
undefeated side at the tournament, the sobering trip to Argentina
four years later prompted more realistic future expectations. In a
decade in which the SFA celebrated its centenary, the scandal of
the Copenhagen Five and a breakdown in relations between the press
and players were significant events - while, on the park, players
of the calibre of Dalglish, Hartford, Jordan, Souness and McQueen
replaced the old guard. Scotland in the 70s looks beyond the
decade's 89 matches, examining the role of the managers - Brown,
Docherty, Ormond, MacLeod, Stein - and the circumstances
surrounding the many memorable games. Extensive newspaper and video
archive research is complemented by the memories of star
contributors including Bobby Brown, Archie MacPherson, Asa
Hartford, Eddie Gray, Willie Morgan, Willie Johnston, Lou Macari,
Bobby Clark, Jimmy Bone and John Blackley.
The 1960s heralded a golden age of players who wore the dark blue
of Scotland. Law, Gilzean, Baxter, Greig and Johnstone are just
some of the names still familiar to supporters today. Bookended by
heavy defeats against the Auld Enemy, the decade witnessed just one
other defeat in the annual fixture against England and contained
both the most-celebrated and horrific of Wembley encounters. The
'60s also included a brief spell with Jock Stein as manager and the
only Scotland international to date to be decided in extra time.
Valiant but ultimately failed World Cup campaigns included
memorable matches against Italy, West Germany and Czechoslovakia;
an embarrassing loss to the amateurs of Norway was offset by a
six-goal spree in Spain a matter of days later. Set against the
backdrop of the Swinging Sixties, Scotland in the 60s looks at each
of the 64 matches played by the national side during the period and
the consequences of those results. Extensive newspaper and video
archive research is complemented by the memories of the players who
took part and the reminiscences of supporters and journalists who
were there.

This book describes a global assessment of stem cell engineering
research, achieved through site visits by a panel of experts to
leading institutes, followed by dedicated workshops. The assessment
made clear that engineers and the engineering approach with its
quantitative, system-based thinking can contribute much to the
progress of stem cell research and development. The increased need
for complex computational models and new, innovative technologies,
such as high-throughput screening techniques, organ-on-a-chip
models and in vitro tumor models require an increasing involvement
of engineers and physical scientists. Additionally, this book will
show that although the US is still in a leadership position in stem
cell engineering, Asian countries such as Japan, China and Korea,
as well as European countries like the UK, Germany, Sweden and the
Netherlands are rapidly expanding their investments in the field.
Strategic partnerships between countries could lead to major
advances of the field and scalable expansion and differentiation of
stem cells. This study was funded by the National Science
Foundation (NSF), the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the
National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST).
