The Ju/'hoan San of Nyae Nyae and Namibian Independence - Development, Democracy, and Indigenous Voices in Southern Africa... The Ju/'hoan San of Nyae Nyae and Namibian Independence - Development, Democracy, and Indigenous Voices in Southern Africa (Paperback, New)
Megan Biesele, Robert K. Hitchcock
R823 Discovery Miles 8 230 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The Ju/'hoan San, or Ju/'hoansi, of Namibia and Botswana are perhaps the most fully described indigenous people in all of anthropology. This is the story of how this group of former hunter-gatherers, speaking an exotic click language, formed a grassroots movement that led them to become a dynamic part of the new nation that grew from the ashes of apartheid South West Africa. While coverage of this group in the writings of Richard Lee, Lorna Marshall, Elizabeth Marshall Thomas, and films by John Marshall includes extensive information on their traditional ways of life, this book continues the story as it has unfolded since 1990. Peopled with accounts of and from contemporary Ju>/'hoan people, the book gives newly-literate Ju/'hoansi the chance to address the world with their own voices. In doing so, the images and myths of the Ju/'hoan and other San (previously called "Bushmen") as either noble savages or helpless victims are discredited. This important book demonstrates the responsiveness of current anthropological advocacy to the aspirations of one of the best-known indigenous societies.

Hunters and Gatherers in the Modern World - Conflict, Resistance, and Self-Determination (Paperback): Megan Biesele, Robert K.... Hunters and Gatherers in the Modern World - Conflict, Resistance, and Self-Determination (Paperback)
Megan Biesele, Robert K. Hitchcock, Peter P. Schweitzer
R937 Discovery Miles 9 370 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

In an age of heightened awareness of the threat that western industrialized societies pose to the environment, hunters and gatherers attract particularly strong interest because they occupy the ecological niches that are constantly eroded. Despite the denial of sovereignty, the world's more than 350 million indigenous peoples continue to assert aboriginal title to significant portions of the world's remaining bio-diversity. As a result, conflicts between tribal peoples and nation states are on the increase. Today, many of the societies that gave the field of anthropology its empirical foundations and unique global vision of a diverse and evolving humanity are being destroyed as a result of national economic, political, and military policies. Although quite a sizable body of literature exists on the living conditions of the hunters and gatherers, this volume is unique in that it represents the first extensive east-west scholarly exchange in anthropology since the demise of the USSR. Moreover, it also offers new perspectives from indigenous communities and scholars in an exchange that be termed "south-north" as opposed to " north-north," denoting the predominance of northern Europe and North America in scholarly debate. The main focus of this volume is on the internal dynamics and political strategies of hunting and gathering societies in areas of self-determination and self-representation. More specifically, it examines areas such as warfare and conflict resolution, resistance, identity and the state, demography and ecology, gender and representation, and world view and religion. It raises a large number of major issues of common concerns and therefore makes important reading for all those interested in human rights issues, ethnic conflict, grassroots development and community organization, and environmental topics.

Once Upon a Time is Now - A Kalahari Memoir (Hardcover): Megan Biesele Once Upon a Time is Now - A Kalahari Memoir (Hardcover)
Megan Biesele
R2,878 Discovery Miles 28 780 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Fifty years after her first fieldwork with Ju/'hoan San hunter-gatherers, anthropologist Megan Biesele has written this exceptional memoir based on personal journals she wrote at the time. The treasure trove of vivid learning experiences and nightly ponderings she found has led to a memoir of rare value to anthropology students and academics as well as to general readers. Her experiences focus on the long-lived healing dance, known to many as the trance dance, and the intricate beliefs, artistry, and social system that support it. She describes her immersion in a creative community enlivened and kept healthy by that dance, which she calls "one of the great intellectual achievements of humankind." From the Preface: A few years ago I finally got around to looking back into the box of personal field journals I had not opened for over forty years. I found a treasure trove. It was an overwhelming experience. So much that I had forgotten came vividly alive: I laughed, wept, and was terrified all over again at my temerity in taking on what I had taken on. To do justice to the richness of these notebooks, I realized, I would have to do a completely different sort of writing from anything I had ever done before.

Kalahari Peoples Fund; Edited by Megan Biesele
R440 Discovery Miles 4 400 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This Ju]'hoan-language literacy primer has been produced by the Ju]'hoan Transcription Group, active since 2002 in Nyae Nyae, Namibia. The members of the Transcription Group, all Ju]'hoan men and women, transcribed and translated versions of Ju]'hoan folktales recorded in Botswana and Namibia between 1971 and 2006, to prepare the selections for the primer. Meant as literacy study materials for youth and adults of the Ju]'hoan communities of both countries, the fourteen selected tales are arranged in order of increasing length and complexity. The tales are not compilations from various versions, but faithful renderings of specific recordings. They are accompanied by both literal, line-by-line English translations and short English synopses.

One of the world's oldest continuing societies, the Ju/'hoansi, or Bushmen of the Kalahari Desert offer profound insights into what is fundamental to human existence. In the face of outside pressures that threaten the complete disruption of their communal way of life, the Ju/'hoansi find deep spiritual resources in their traditional healing dance. Their indigenous method of healing individuals is also a powerful affirmation of the community, and has recently become a means of settling land and property disputes, problems that never existed in the old days. The healing dance promises to be the crucial factor that allows the Ju/'hoansi to preserve their culture into the 21st century. These inspiring people set an example for us to look beyond the false promises of modern technology in search of the spiritual healing that is so desperately needed in our own culture and within ourselves.
