The Politics of Moral Sin - Abortion and Divorce in Spain, Chile and Argentina (Hardcover): Merike Blofield The Politics of Moral Sin - Abortion and Divorce in Spain, Chile and Argentina (Hardcover)
Merike Blofield
R4,500 Discovery Miles 45 000 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book analyzes the problems that arise when women's rights conflict with the views of conservative organized religion. Specifically, it addresses the legalization--or lack thereof--of divorce and abortion in three recently democratized Catholic countries: Spain, Chile, and Argentina. The book offers a vital and timely contribution to political debates on democratic consolidation, social policy, gender and politics as well as religion and politics. It challenges many of the accepted assumptions and conclusions in these fields, arguing that to understand the political dynamics and policy trajectories on these issues we must first analyze the distribution of both economic and political power. This book moves the debate away from a (unitary) focus on values and public opinion to an analysis of how economic, social and political structures give certain actors more power than others. The topics covered should appeal to a broad readership interested in the difficulties of democratic consolidation in Latin America, and the obstacle to social policy reform in a region with such high levels of inequality. The analysis presented in this book also deepens our understanding of why and how European countries have been so successful in limiting the indulgence of organized religion and in promoting women's rights.

The Politics of Social Protection During Times of Crisis: Merike Blofield, Jennifer Pribble, Cecilia Giambruno The Politics of Social Protection During Times of Crisis
Merike Blofield, Jennifer Pribble, Cecilia Giambruno
R608 Discovery Miles 6 080 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

In 2020, as Latin American countries shuttered their economies, it became clear that effective lockdowns would require states to provide income support. In a region that has historically struggled to build systems of social protection, the effort to expand benefits was notable. Policies varied in scope and generosity, but in what seemed to signify a new era of state-building, Latin American democracies demonstrated a nearly uniform commitment to providing assistance to the poor. Why did some countries implement broader and more adequate programs than others and why did countries vary in their ability to sustain support over time? This Element argues that three factors explain cross-national and cross-temporal differences in policy effort: policy legacies, unified/divided government, and fiscal space. The study shows that in settings of crisis, the democratic politics of social policy expansion shift, with traditional factors like ideology and electoral competition playing a less central role.

Care Work and Class - Domestic Workers' Struggle for Equal Rights in Latin America (Paperback, New): Merike Blofield Care Work and Class - Domestic Workers' Struggle for Equal Rights in Latin America (Paperback, New)
Merike Blofield
R917 Discovery Miles 9 170 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Despite constitutions that enshrine equality, until recently every state in Latin America permitted longer working hours (in some cases more than double the hours) and lower benefits for domestic workers than other workers. This has, in effect, subsidized a cheap labor force for middle- and upper-class families and enabled well-to-do women to enter professional labor markets without having to negotiate household and care work with their male partners. While elite resistance to reform has been widespread, during the past fifteen years a handful of countries have instituted equal rights. In Care Work and Class, Merike Blofield examines how domestic workers' mobilization, strategic alliances, and political windows of opportunity, mostly linked to left-wing executive and legislative allies, can lead to improved rights even in a region as unequal as Latin America. Blofield also examines the conditions that lead to better enforcement of rights.

The Great Gap - Inequality and the Politics of Redistribution in Latin America (Paperback, New): Merike Blofield The Great Gap - Inequality and the Politics of Redistribution in Latin America (Paperback, New)

The relationship between socioeconomic inequality and democratic politics has been one of the central questions in the social sciences from Aristotle on. Recent waves of democratization, combined with deepened global inequalities, have made understanding this relationship ever more crucial. In The Great Gap, Merike Blofield seeks to contribute to this understanding by analyzing inequality and politics in the region with the highest socioeconomic inequalities in the world: Latin America. The chapters, written by prominent scholars in their fields, address the socioeconomic context and inequality of opportunities; elite culture, public opinion, and media framing; capital mobility, campaign financing, representation, and gender equality policies; and taxation and social policies.
