sections dealing with fuzzy functions and fuzzy random functions are certain to be of special interest. The reader is expected to be in command of the knowledge gained in a basic university mathematics course, with the inclusion of stochastic elements. A specification of uncertainty in any particular case is often difficult. For this reason Chaps. 3 and 4 are devoted solely to this problem. The derivation of fuzzy variables for representing informal and lexical uncertainty reflects the subjective assessment of objective conditions in the form of a membership function. Techniques for modeling fuzzy random variables are presented for data that simultaneously exhibit stochastic and nonstochastic properties. The application of fuzzy randomness is demonstrated in three fields of civil engineering and computational mechanics: structural analysis, safety assessment, and design. The methods of fuzzy structural analysis and fuzzy probabilistic structural analysis developed in Chap. 5 are applicable without restriction to arbitrary geometrically and physically nonlinear problems. The most important forms of the latter are the Fuzzy Finite Element Method (FFEM) and the Fuzzy Stochastic Finite Element Method (FSFEM).
This book provides an analysis of the origin and effect of human errors in engineering. Using cases from everyday construction and large-scale accidents, the circumstances associated with the creation of errors are illustrated, along with strategies for their prevention, with the goal to eventually minimize cost overruns, delays, and accidents. The book features a discussion of the circumstances related to error proneness, the review of some sixty mishaps or near misses from real-life construction, the systematic analysis of 238 large-scale accidents in engineering systems, the perspective of psychology on the origin of faulty human performance, and a review of the relation of management to error proneness.
"In these economic times this book is more important than ever. A must-read for the leaders of today and tomorrow." Douglas R. Conant, president and chief executive officer, Campbell Soup Company Praise for High Commitment, High Performance "It is seldom that I read a book about leadership and get
excited; this one did that to me. The author has found values and
aspects of leadership that have worked well for long term execution
of strategies. For Boards and CEOs, this is a great book." "Resilience promises to be the distinguishing characteristic of
companies that will prosper from the current economic crisis. Mike
Beer's new book is a compelling manual for success in this new
economy." "A must read for leaders who want to develop an edge by building
a resilient organization for competitive advantage. Beer's views
and recommendations are based on extensive research." "With decades of teaching and research and close engagement with
companies, Michael Beer has written a book that not only makes the
case for building a high commitment organization, but also provides
practical advice for doing it." "Beer brings a multi-disciplinary perspective from his extensive
experience in industry and academia to reveal how leaders of HCHP
organizations break through internal barriers and manage multiple
tensions in their quest for sustainable value-creation." "Mike Beer brings his wealth of research and experience to
provide fresh insights to the enduring question of what makes
companies succeed over the long run. I have utilized many of the
principles successfully and recommend them to any corporate leader
committed to building an outstanding organization."

For many centuries the meaning of food has been much more than merely nutrition on the table. The types of food a man eats, the ways in which he cooks it, the style in which it is served: all these carry their own significance which is extended by contemporary and later observers to describe the identity of the unwitting eater. This book looks at the way in which food was employed in Greek and Roman literature to impart identity, whether social, individual, religious or ethnic. In many instances these markers are laid down in the way that foods were restricted, in other words by looking at the negatives instead of the positives of what was consumed. Michael Beer looks at several aspects of food restriction in antiquity, for example, the way in which they eschewed excess and glorified the simple diet; the way in which Jewish dietary restriction identified that nation under the Empire; the way in which Pythagoreans denied themselves meat (and beans); and the way in which the poor were restricted by economic reality from enjoying the full range of foods. These topics allow him to look at important aspects of Graeco-Roman social attitudes. For example, republic virtue, imperial laxity, Homeric and Spartan military valour, social control through sumptuary laws, and answers to excessive drinking. He also looks closely at the inherent divide of the Roman world between the twin centres of Greece and Rome and how it is expressed in food and its consumption. The book is written for the intelligent and educated reader but does not rely on quotations in the original Latin or Greek. It is fully referenced and indexed.
Is Silence Killing Your Strategy? In his thirty years of working in corporations, Harvard Business School professor Michael Beer has witnessed firsthand how organizational silence derails strategic objectives. When employees can't speak truth to power, senior leaders don't hear what they need to hear about their company's fitness to compete, and employees lose trust in those leaders and become less committed to change. In Fit to Compete, Beer presents an antidote to silence--principles and a time-tested innovative process for holding honest conversations with everyone in your organization. Used by over eight hundred organizations across the globe, the strategic fitness process has helped leaders in a diverse range of industries--including medical technology, information technology, banking, restaurant chains, and pharmaceuticals--hear the raw but necessary truth about the sources of misalignment between their strategies and their organizations. In addition to step-by-step instructions, Beer offers detailed and illustrative case studies of companies that have conducted honest conversations to great effect. He also shows how to apply the process more broadly to a variety of strategic challenges and at multiple levels throughout the organization. Practical, enlightening, and comprehensive, Fit to Compete is the book you should turn to if you to want create winning strategies that your entire company will rally behind.
This anonymous Commentary is printed from Troyes, Bibl. munic. 658, a manuscript written at Clairvaux in the late 12th century. It is well known that St Bernard in 1147 revised the monastic hymnal for the use of his Cistercian monks; the anonymous Explanatio is primary evidence for the content of Bernard's hymnal. It is also an invaluable index of Cistercian spirituality in the late 12th century, and provides an index of the range of reading of a Cistercian scholar of that time.
