Prandtls zu Turbulenzen und zur Grenzschichttheorie vorgestellt,
kommentiert und in einen historischen sowie sozio-kulturellen
Hintergrund eingeordnet.
Turbulence is a research field where high expectations have met
with recurrent frustration. It is a common perception among
physicists, mathematicians and engineers that there is a "big
mystery" behind the phenomenon of turbulence. Its history has also
remained anything but well researched. Unlike topics such as
quantum theory, which began to attract physics historians as long
as fifty years ago, turbulence has - until now - received only
little professional historical investigation. In this book, which
complements his earlier SpringerBrief "The Turbulence Problem", the
author sketches the history of turbulence from the vantage point of
its roots (Part I), the basic concepts (Part II) and the formation
of a scientific community that regarded turbulence as a research
field in its own right (Part III). From this perspective turbulence
research appears to undertake an odyssey through uncharted
territories. The book follows this development up until a
conference in Marseille in the year 1961, which marked the
inauguration of turbulence in the words of its organizer as "a new
science". The epilogue contains some observations about turbulence
research since 1961. This book provides a rich source of
information for all those interested in the history of this major
field of basic and applied science.
This book traces the history of Arnold Sommerfeld's famous "nursery
of theoretical physics" at the University of Munich and
demonstrates the centrality of developing personal and
institutional networks for the emergence of quantum theory.
Sommerfeld, originally a mathematician with little interest in
theoretical physics, was a somewhat unlikely choice for a chair of
theoretical physics when he was appointed in 1906. However, he
quickly reoriented his research focus towards physics, forstering a
keen interest in experimental research. Possibly even more
important for the development of quantum theory in the coming years
was his exceptional talent as a charismatic teacher and prolific
networker, which turned Munich into a central node in the
fast-growing network of quantum physicists in the 1920s. It is no
coincidence that the two most talented "child prodigies" of 1920s
quantum physics, Wolfgang Pauli and Werner Heisenberg, were his
students, nor that by the end of the decade about a dozen of
Sommerfeld's former disciples held chairs in theoretical physics.
The book is directed at historians of science and physics, as well
as all those interested in the history of science diplomacy and
networking. The book is part of a series of publications on the
early network of quantum physics. These works emerged from an
expansive study on the quantum revolution as a major transformation
of physical knowledge undertaken by the Max Planck Institute for
the History of Science and the Fritz Haber Institute (2006-2012).

This is a comprehensive biography of Ludwig Prandtl (1875-1953),
the father of modern aerodynamics. His name is associated most
famously with the boundary layer concept, but also with several
other topics in 20th century fluid mechanics, particularly
turbulence (Prandtl's mixing length). Among his disciples are
pioneers of modern fluid mechanics such as Heinrich Blasius,
Theodore von Karman and Walter Tollmien. Furthermore, Prandtl
founded the Aerodynamische Versuchsanstalt (AVA) and the
Kaiser-Wilhelm-Institut fur Stroemungsforschung in Goettingen, both
of them seeds for the growth of fluid mechanics in Germany. Yet
Prandtl was also a representative of aeronautical research - from
Imperial Germany via the Weimar Republic to the "Third Reich".
Although not a party member, he assumed the role of a goodwill
ambassador for Nazi Germany. This objective treatment of his career
will be of interest to all scientists and historians wanting to
learn more about Prandtl's influence and the early development of
fluid- and aerodynamics.
Through a simple, step-by-step progression, this handbook provides
individuals with the means to learn how to quiet their inner critic
and to experience forgiveness, self-acceptance, and empowerment.
Employing a methodology rooted in the principles of non-violent
communication, the process lays out a path for achieving freedom
from toxic and emotionally draining guilt, blame, and shame.
Examples of real-world situations enable individuals to visualise
how they, like others, can forgive themselves for past mistakes and
successfully mend broken relationships.
The subject of the book is a biography of the theoretical physicist
Arnold Sommerfeld (1868-1951). Although Sommerfeld is famous as a
quantum theorist for the elaboration of the semi-classical atomic
theory (Bohr-Sommerfeld model, Sommerfeld's fine-structure
constant), his role in the history of modern physics is not
confined to atoms and quanta.
Sommerfeld left his mark in the history of mathematics, fluid
mechanics, a number of physical subdisciplines and, in particular,
as founder of a most productive "school" (Peter Debye, Wolfgang
Pauli, Werner Heisenberg, Linus Pauling and Hans Bethe were his
pupils, to name only the Nobel laureates among them). This
biography is to a large extent based on primary source material
(correspondence, diaries, unpublished manuscripts). It should be of
particular interest to students who are keen to know more about the
historical roots of modern science.
Sommerfeld lived through turbulent times of German history
(Wilhelmian Empire, Weimar Republic, Nazi period). His life,
therefore, illustrates how science and scientists perform in
changing social environments. From this perspective, the biography
should also attract readers with a general interest in the history
of science and technology.
On the road toward a history of turbulence, this book focuses on
what the actors in this research field have identified as the
"turbulence problem". Turbulent flow rose to prominence as one of
the most persistent challenges in science. At different times and
in different social and disciplinary settings, the nature of this
problem has changed in response to changing research agendas. This
book does not seek to provide a comprehensive account, but instead
an exemplary exposition on the environments in which problems
become the subjects of research agendas, with particular emphasis
on the first half of the 20th century.
Am 6. Dezember 1915 und am 8. Januar 1916 legte Arnold Sommerfeld
Publikation daru ber. "Meine Spektrallinien sind endlich in der
Akademie in's Unreine gedruckt. In den Annalen werden sie in
gelauterter Form erscheinen," so hatte Sommerfeld am 10. Februar
missionarischer Eifer beim Verbreiten eigener Ideen,
Fortschrittsglauben, wirtschaftliche Randbedingungen, Erwartungen
geworfen
An investigation into the grave stones of Roman freedmen from
Capua, which looks at inscriptions, the different styles, and the
meaning of different elements of decoration, such as togas. There
is also a catalogue.
