Turbulence is a research field where high expectations have met with recurrent frustration. It is a common perception among physicists, mathematicians and engineers that there is a "big mystery" behind the phenomenon of turbulence. Its history has also remained anything but well researched. Unlike topics such as quantum theory, which began to attract physics historians as long as fifty years ago, turbulence has - until now - received only little professional historical investigation. In this book, which complements his earlier SpringerBrief "The Turbulence Problem", the author sketches the history of turbulence from the vantage point of its roots (Part I), the basic concepts (Part II) and the formation of a scientific community that regarded turbulence as a research field in its own right (Part III). From this perspective turbulence research appears to undertake an odyssey through uncharted territories. The book follows this development up until a conference in Marseille in the year 1961, which marked the inauguration of turbulence in the words of its organizer as "a new science". The epilogue contains some observations about turbulence research since 1961. This book provides a rich source of information for all those interested in the history of this major field of basic and applied science.

This book traces the history of Arnold Sommerfeld's famous "nursery of theoretical physics" at the University of Munich and demonstrates the centrality of developing personal and institutional networks for the emergence of quantum theory. Sommerfeld, originally a mathematician with little interest in theoretical physics, was a somewhat unlikely choice for a chair of theoretical physics when he was appointed in 1906. However, he quickly reoriented his research focus towards physics, forstering a keen interest in experimental research. Possibly even more important for the development of quantum theory in the coming years was his exceptional talent as a charismatic teacher and prolific networker, which turned Munich into a central node in the fast-growing network of quantum physicists in the 1920s. It is no coincidence that the two most talented "child prodigies" of 1920s quantum physics, Wolfgang Pauli and Werner Heisenberg, were his students, nor that by the end of the decade about a dozen of Sommerfeld's former disciples held chairs in theoretical physics. The book is directed at historians of science and physics, as well as all those interested in the history of science diplomacy and networking. The book is part of a series of publications on the early network of quantum physics. This is a comprehensive biography of Ludwig Prandtl (1875-1953), the father of modern aerodynamics. His name is associated most famously with the boundary layer concept, but also with several other topics in 20th century fluid mechanics, particularly turbulence (Prandtl's mixing length). Among his disciples are pioneers of modern fluid mechanics such as Heinrich Blasius, Theodore von Karman and Walter Tollmien. Furthermore, Prandtl founded the Aerodynamische Versuchsanstalt (AVA) and the Kaiser-Wilhelm-Institut fur Stroemungsforschung in Goettingen, both of them seeds for the growth of fluid mechanics in Germany. Yet Prandtl was also a representative of aeronautical research - from Imperial Germany via the Weimar Republic to the "Third Reich". Although not a party member, he assumed the role of a goodwill ambassador for Nazi Germany. Sommerfeld left his mark in the history of mathematics, fluid mechanics, a number of physical subdisciplines and, in particular, as founder of a most productive "school" (Peter Debye, Wolfgang Pauli, Werner Heisenberg, Linus Pauling and Hans Bethe were his pupils, to name only the Nobel laureates among them). This biography is to a large extent based on primary source material (correspondence, diaries, unpublished manuscripts). It should be of particular interest to students who are keen to know more about the historical roots of modern science.
Sommerfeld lived through turbulent times of German history (Wilhelmian Empire, Weimar Republic, Nazi period). His life, therefore, illustrates how science and scientists perform in changing social environments. On the road toward a history of turbulence, this book focuses on what the actors in this research field have identified as the "turbulence problem". Turbulent flow rose to prominence as one of the most persistent challenges in science. At different times and in different social and disciplinary settings, the nature of this problem has changed in response to changing research agendas. This book does not seek to provide a comprehensive account, but instead an exemplary exposition on the environments in which problems become the subjects of research agendas, with particular emphasis on the first half of the 20th century.

Januar 1916 legte Arnold Sommerfeld der Bayerischen Akademie der Wissenschaften zwei Abhandlungen im Umfang von 75 Druckseiten vor, mit denen er das Bohrsche Atommodell aus dem Jahr 1913 zur Bohr-Sommerfeldschen Atomtheorie erweiterte. In Sommerfelds Gesammelten Schriften findet sich nur die im Juli 1916 von Sommerfeld in den Annalen der Physik eingereichte Publikation daru ber. "Meine Spektrallinien sind endlich in der Akademie in's Unreine gedruckt. In den Annalen werden sie in gelauterter Form erscheinen," so hatte Sommerfeld am 10. Februar 1916 dem Herausgeber der Annalen der Physik diese Publikation angeku ndigt. Aus wissenschaftshistorischer Sicht sind fu r die Erweiterung der Bohrschen Atomtheorie jedoch gerade die vor dem Lauterungsprozess publizierten Akademieabhandlungen von besonderem Interesse. Der Reproduktion dieser Akademieabhandlungen wird ein ausfu hrlicher physikhistorischer Essay (ca. 100 Druckseiten) vorangestellt."

Dieses Buch liefert eine Sozialgeschichte der modernen theoretischen Physik am Beispiel Arnold Sommerfelds, des nach Einstein einflussreichsten und bedeutendsten theoretischen Physikers unseres Jahrhunderts. Dreh- und Angelpunkt der Uberlegungen bildet die Moglichkeit der Wiederheirat in der Orthodoxen Kirche. Trotz Sakramentalitat und Unaufloslichkeit der Ehe hat die Orthodoxe Kirche einen Weg gefunden, auch Geschiedenen eine Wiederheirat zu ermoglichen, deren Segensfeier in der Praxis sogar wesentliche Merkmale einer sakramentalen ( ) Eheschliessung enthalt. In den ersten Kapiteln des Buches werden die Bibel und die kirchliche Tradition, also die Quellen des christlichen Glaubens, nach der Moglichkeit der Scheidung und Wiederheirat befragt. In den weiteren Kapiteln wird die orthodoxe Theologie der Ehe untersucht. Hinsichtlich der vorliegenden Fragestellung ist hier die Unterscheidung der Orthodoxie (strenge Beachtung der Lehre) und Orthopraxie (seelsorgliches Handeln vor dem Hintergrund der gottlichen Barmherzigkeit) von zentraler Bedeutung. Vor dem Hintergrund der Moglichkeit der Wiederheirat in der Orthodoxen Kirche wird dann ein Ausblick auf die Perspektiven fur die wiederverheirateten Geschiedenen in der Katholischen Kirche geworfen

Ludwig Prandtl gilt als Pionier der modernen Stroemungsmechanik. Seine Grenzschichttheorie uberbruckte eine Jahrhunderte andauernde Kluft zwischen Theorie und Praxis auf diesem Gebiet. Prandtl hinterliess daruber hinaus bleibende Spuren in einer Fulle von ingenieurwissenschaftlichen Disziplinen, von der Festigkeitslehre bis zur Erforschung der Turbulenz.
