This book is the second in the series Sources for the Study of
Irish Politics, which is produced by the Political Studies
Association of Ireland (PSAI). The aim of the PSAI is to promote
the professional study of politics in and of Ireland, and the aim
of the series is to make more widely available material that is at
present difficult to obtain. Building on its predecessor Irish
Elections 1922-44: Results and Analysis (1993), this volume
assembles the full results of all elections to Dail Eireann from
1948 to 1977. The book also contains analysis of each election,
summaries of votes, percentages and seats for each election, lists
of TDs (members of parliament) elected at each election,
information on defeated TDs and women TDs, analysis of tranfer
patterns, members of govenrment appointed after each election, and
the full results of all by-elections held in the period. It also
provides summary results of the nine general elections of the
period 1981-2007, along with a comprehensive list of TDs 1922-2008.
Elections to Dail Eireann are held under the PR-STV (single
tranferable vote) electoral system, and this volume provides a
fascinating account of PR-STV in operation as well as constituting
an indispensble record of Irish political history over the middle
years of the independent state.
This book brings together the fields of artificial intelligence
(often known as A.I.) and inclusive education in order to speculate
on the future of teaching and learning in increasingly diverse
social, cultural, emotional, and linguistic educational contexts.
This book addresses a pressing need to understand how future
educational practices can promote equity and equality, while at the
same time adopting A.I. systems that are oriented towards
automation, standardisation and efficiency. The contributions in
this edited volume appeal to scholars and students with an interest
in forming a critical understanding of the development of A.I. for
education, as well as an interest in how the processes of inclusive
education might be shaped by future technologies. Grounded in
theoretical engagement, establishing key challenges for future
practice, and outlining the latest research, this book offers a
comprehensive overview of the complex issues arising from the
convergence of A.I. technologies and the necessity of developing
inclusive teaching and learning. To date, there has been little in
the way of direct association between research and practice in
these domains: A.I. has been a predominantly technical field of
research and development, and while intelligent computer systems
and 'smart' software are being increasingly applied in many areas
of industry, economics, social life, and education itself, a
specific engagement with the agenda of inclusion appears lacking.
Although such technology offers exciting possibilities for
education, including software that is designed to 'personalise'
learning or adapt to learner behaviours, these developments are
accompanied by growing concerns about the in-built biases involved
in machine learning techniques driven by 'big data'.
This manual provides laboratory-based learning experiences in
perceptually and psychosocially linked exercise assessment,
prescription, and programming. The primary pedagogic outcome is the
ability to use applied theory and practice in perceptual and
psychosocial exercise assessment and program design to promote the
adoption and maintenance of a physically active lifestyle,
enhancing overall health fitness. Perceptual and psychosocial
variables are presented in individual, stand-alone laboratory
modules that can supplement existing curricula such as exercise and
sport psychology, exercise physiology, exercise testing and
prescription, and exercise training and conditioning. In addition,
the complete modular set has a conceptual flow that allows its
presentation as an entire, laboratory-based course. The laboratory
modules are divided into three primary units: assessment
(theoretical constructs, scales and procedures, tests),
prescription (self-regulation, performance), and program
evaluation. The manual uses a unique format in which case studies
are embedded in the conceptual flow of each lab module facilitating
translation of laboratory results to real-world application. The
manual concludes with a discussion of perceptually and
psychosocially linked exercise prescription and programming
applications in public health, such as program monitoring and
adherence.
How Ireland Voted 2002 provides an in depth analysis of the Irish
general election. Continuing an established series of election
studies, it sets out the context of the campaign, assesses the
impact of the political parties' marketing strategies, and presents
first hand candidate campaign diaries. It analyzes voting patterns
employing both aggregate data and survey evidence, discusses the
post election negotiations leading to the formation of the new
government, and considers the implications for the future of the
Irish party system.
The referendum has become established as part of the
decision-making process in many European countries. Experts from
each country survey the historical experience and current debates
in Austria, Denmark, Finland, France, Ireland, Italy, the
Netherlands, Norway, Russia and eastern Europe, Sweden, Switzerland
and the United Kingdom. The impact of the referendum experience
upon European politics is assessed, and the merits of the use of
the referendum are evaluated, with a discussion on the implications
for political parties, party systems, and representative
government.
"I'm not going to let you go. It took longer than I'd bargained to
get you unconscious. I'm planning to keep you here for a couple of
years or so." When Isabel Eriksson wakes up she's not sure where
she is. She's got a needle in her arm. Next to the bed a man is
sitting and staring at her. He tells her that he intends to keep
her locked up. Isabel realises that the only way for her to get out
alive is to somehow make him release her and so a psychological
game begins. Will Isabel remain in the bunker forever?

This book is the 9th volume in the established How Ireland Voted
series and provides the definitive story of Ireland's
mould-breaking 2020 election. For the first time ever, Sinn Fein
won the most votes, the previously dominant parties shrank to a
fraction of their former strengths, and the government to emerge
was a coalition between previously irreconcilable enemies. For
these reasons, the election marks the end of an era in Irish
politics. This book analyses the course of the campaign, the
parties' gains and losses, and the impact of issues, especially the
role of Brexit. Voting behaviour is explored in depth, with
examination of the role of issues and discussion of the role of
social cleavages such as class, age and education. The process by
which the government was put together over a period of nearly five
months is traced through in-depth interviews with participants. And
six candidates who contested Election 2020 give first-hand reports
of their campaigns.
Into Extra Time comprises the powerful reflections of Fr Michael
Paul Gallagher SJ which he wrote during the final months of his
life following a diagnosis of cancer. While undergoing several
cycles of chemotherapy and ultimately passing into palliative care,
Fr Michael Paul documented his journey – physical, psychological
and spiritual – in a diary which is included in this book
alongside other notes and insights, and two theological essays: on
death and on concern for unbelief. The whole is a remarkable
testament to the life, intellect and spiritual sensitivity of a
much-loved author, theologian and priest, which offers light to
others looking for guidance in times of struggle.
This book is the definitive analysis of the 2016 Irish general
election and is the eighth book in the well-established How Ireland
Voted series. The 2011 election in Ireland was characterised as an
earthquake, but the aftershocks visible in the 2016 election were
equally dramatic. This election saw the rout of the government that
had presided over a remarkable economic recovery, and marked a new
low for the strength of the traditional party system, as smaller
parties and independents attracted almost half of all votes. The
first chapter sets the context, and later ones investigate the
extent to which the outgoing government fulfilled its 2011 pledges,
and how candidates were selected. The success or otherwise of
campaign strategies is assessed, the results and the behaviour of
voters are analysed, and the aftermath, when it took a record
length of time to form a government, is explored. Other chapters
examine the consequence of new gender quotas for candidate
selection, consider the reasons for the unusual success of
independents, and reflect on the implications. The book also
reveals intriguing insights into the candidates' experiences of the
election, both successful and unsuccessful. It will be of use to
students, teachers and scholars of Irish politics, as well as the
wider reader interested in Irish politics and elections.

With a total population of some 500 million, the unified countries
of modern Europe constitute the world's largest collection of
successful capitalist democracies. Yet within it, there are
distinct clusters of states, each with its own characteristics,
historical allegiances and political processes.Combining superb
scholarship and rigorous empirical data with an accessible and
engaging writing style, Representative Government in Modern Europe
remains the leading textbook on comparativeEuropean politics. The
fifth edition reflects key events and changes including the impact
of the world financial and economic crisis; the EU's adoption of
the Lisbon Treaty; and the election of a centre-right governments
in Germany and the UK. Retaining its comprehensive thematic
approach to Europe as an integrated whole, while reflecting the
continued importance of the EU, the new edition explores the key
themes emerging in European politics: the importance of political
leadership, the rise of the populist and extreme right, the
personalisation of politics, ethnicity, citizen participation.
Modern Methods of Construction is a Dissertation that reviews the
changing methods of construction used in the Irish construction
industry in recent years. Modern methods of construction are being
widely used in lieu of traditional methods and this dissertation
aims to determine the affect they are having on the construction
industry. The dissertation assesses the issues that have hindered
traditional construction methods and the factors that encouraged
the growth of modern methods of construction. There also is an
insight provided on modern methods of construction covering aspects
such as their background, development and the advantages they
possess over traditional methods and the actual types of methods
being implemented. An extensive amount of field research was
carried out to capture the opinions and attitudes of contractors
and construction professionals, who are directly involved in the
industry. This established that the construction industry is going
through a fundamental change by embracing innovative construction
methods as the way forward for the industry.
