Can civil war ever be overcome? Can a better order come into being? This book explores how the Roman civil wars of the first century BCE laid the template for addressing perennially urgent questions. The Roman Republic's collapse and Augustus' new Empire have remained ideological battlegrounds to this day. Integrative and disintegrative readings begun in antiquity (Vergil and Lucan) have left their mark on answers given by Christians (Augustine), secular republicans (Victor Hugo), and disillusioned satirists (Michel Houellebecq) alike. France's self-understanding as a new Rome - republican during the Revolution, imperial under successive Napoleons - makes it a special case in the Roman tradition. The same story returns repeatedly. A golden age of restoration glimmers on the horizon, but comes in the guise of a decadent, oriental empire that reintroduces and exposes everything already wrong under the defunct republic. Central to the price of social order is patriarchy's need to subjugate women.

Exemplarity and Singularity - Thinking through Particulars in Philosophy, Literature, and Law (Paperback): Michele Lowrie,... Exemplarity and Singularity - Thinking through Particulars in Philosophy, Literature, and Law (Paperback)
Michele Lowrie, Susanne Ludemann
R1,589 Discovery Miles 15 890 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book pursues a strand in the history of thought - ranging from codified statutes to looser social expectations - that uses particulars, more specifically examples, to produce norms. Much intellectual history takes ancient Greece as a point of departure. But the practice of exemplarity is historically rooted firmly in ancient Roman rhetoric, oratory, literature, and law - genres that also secured its transmission. Their pragmatic approach results in a conceptualization of politics, social organization, philosophy, and law that is derived from the concrete. It is commonly supposed that, with the shift from pre-modern to modern ways of thinking - as modern knowledge came to privilege abstraction over exempla, the general over the particular - exemplarity lost its way. This book reveals the limits of this understanding. Tracing the role of exemplarity from Rome through to its influence on the fields of literature, politics, philosophy, psychoanalysis and law, it shows how Roman exemplarity has subsisted, not only as a figure of thought, but also as an alternative way to organize and to transmit knowledge.

Writing, Performance, and Authority in Augustan Rome (Hardcover): Michele Lowrie Writing, Performance, and Authority in Augustan Rome (Hardcover)
Michele Lowrie

In Writing, Performance, and Authority in Augustan Rome Michele Lowrie examines how the Romans conceived of their poetic media. Song has links to the divine through prophecy, while writing offers a more quotisian, but also more realistic way of presenting what a poet does. In a culture of highly polished book production where recitation was the fashion, to claim to sing or to write was one means of self-definition. Lowrie assesses the stakes of poetic claims to one medium or another. Generic definition is an important factor. Epic and lyric have traditional associations with song, while the literacy epistle is obviously written. But issuess of poetic interpretability and power matter even more. The choice of medium contributes to the debate about the relative potency of rival discourses, specifically poetry, politics, and the law. Writing could offer an escape from the social and political demands of the moment by shifting the focus toward the readership of posterity.

Generative Programming and Component Engineering (GPCE) is a leading - searchconferenceonautomaticprogrammingandcomponentengineering. These approaches to software engineering have the potential to revolutionize software development as automation and components revolutionized manufacturing. The conference brings together researchers and practitioners interested in adva- ing automation for software development. GPCE and ICFP are both sponsored by the Association for Computing Machinery. The quality and breadth of the papers submitted to GPCE 2005 was impr- sive. All 86 papers, including 5 papers for tool demonstrations, were rigorously reviewed by 17 highly quali?ed Program Committee members. The members of the Program Committee ?rst provided in-depth individual reviews of the s- mitted papers, and then debated the merits of the papers through an extended electronicProgramCommitteemeeting. After much(friendly) argument,25r- ular papers and 2 tool demonstration papers were selected for publication. Horace: Odes and Epodes (Paperback): Michele Lowrie Horace: Odes and Epodes (Paperback)
Michele Lowrie
R2,298 Discovery Miles 22 980 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This collection of recent articles provides convenient access to some of the best recent writing on Horace's Odes and Epodes. Formalist, structuralist, and historicizing approaches alike offer insight into this complex poet, who reinvented lyric at the transition from the Republic to the Augustan principate. Several classic studies in French, German, and Italian are here translated into English for the first time. A thread linking many of the pieces is the recurring debate over the performance of Horace's Odes. Fiction? Literal reality? A figurative appropriation of Greek tradition within the bookish culture of late Hellenism? Arguments both for and against gain a hearing. Michele Lowrie's introduction surveys the state of current scholarship and offers guidance on the seminal issues confronting the interpretation of Horatian lyric today. Suggestions for further reading and a consolidated bibliography open avenues for more extensive research.

This author is extraordinarily lucky to be alive All those who read this splendid Second World War memoir will doubtless come to the same view. returncharacterreturncharacterAfter joining up in 1939 with the Queen's Royal Regiment the Author was posted to the North West Frontier of India where he cut his teeth chasing Pathan tribesman bandit gangs for two years. This was exciting enough but only a taste of what was to come. The Japanese advance into Burma threatened India and along with many thousands of British and Colonial troops Lowry found himself fighting in the Arakan region. Conditions were appalling and the fighting was extremely bitter by any standards. His Battalion was cut off by the Japs for three weeks but refused to surrender yet even worse was to come as the Battalion was thrown into the thick of the action at Kohima which is rated as the most desperate defensive action for the campaign. In one week 173 members of this Battalion were lost. Lowry himself was seriously wounded when a Japanese officer dropped out of a tree onto him. All this is vividly described in this fascinating and inspiring book.

Horace's Narrative Odes (Hardcover): Michele Lowrie Horace's Narrative Odes (Hardcover)
Michele Lowrie
R6,091 Discovery Miles 60 910 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book analyses the different use of lyric and narrative in Horace's Odes. On the formal level, numerous odes contain narration. Together they tell a larger story about the aesthetic and political demands on the poet's development as a lyrist. At issue is whether Horace can ever truly become a poet of praise.

Transitioning from private to public status is a watershed event in the life of any firm. For most firms and managers, the process of conducting an Initial Public Offering (IPO) is something they will only go through once. As such, there exists much uncertainty over the process, starting with the decision of whether to go public and including issues such as when to go public, who to select as advisors, how to price the offering and how to structure the governance of the newly public firm. A broad set of academic literature has studied all these issues, and the purpose of Initial Public Offerings is to review the existing evidence and suggest areas where our understanding is less complete and would benefit from further research. Section 1 reviews the reasons that firms go public. Having established firms' basic motivations for public listing, Section 2 provides an empirical overview of the key aspects of the IPO process. Section 3 provides a detailed discussion of the institutional details surrounding the IPO process, which are crucial to understanding this market. Section 4 reviews the rich literature on the pricing of IPOs, and the role of the underwriter in the process. Section 5 discusses the role of intermediaries throughout the IPO process. Sections 6 and 7 review the literature and evidence on post-IPO returns and cycles in the IPO market, respectively. Finally, Section 8 discusses the burgeoning literature on the governance of newly public firms and Section 9 concludes.
