This book applies a new analytical framework to the study of the evolution of large Internet companies such as Apple, Google, Microsoft, Facebook, Amazon and Samsung. It sheds light on the dynamics of business groups, which are approached as 'business ecosystems,' and introduces the concept of Epigenetic Economic Dynamics (EED), which is defined as the study of the epigenetic dynamics generated as a result of the adaptation of organizations to major changes in their respective environments. The book augments the existing literature on evolutionary economic thinking with findings from epigenetics, which are proving increasingly useful in analyzing the workings of large organizations. It also details the theoretical and conceptual nature of recent work based on evolutionary economics, mainly from the perspective of generalized Darwinism, resilience and related variety, and complements the work conducted on evolutionary economics by applying the analytical framework of EED. It makes it easier to forecast future dynamics on the Internet by proving that a sizable number of big business groups are veering from their initial paths to take unprecedented new directions as a result of competition pressure, and as such is a valuable resource for postgraduates and researchers as well as those involved in economics and innovation studies.

The Charlemagne Legend in Medieval Latin Texts (Hardcover): William J. Purkis, Matthew Gabriele The Charlemagne Legend in Medieval Latin Texts (Hardcover)
William J. Purkis, Matthew Gabriele; Contributions by Andrew Romig, Jace Stuckey, James B. Williams, …
R3,208 Discovery Miles 32 080 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Essays on the various manifestations of Charlemagne and his legends. This book explores the multiplicity of ways in which the Charlemagne legend was recorded in Latin texts of the central and later Middle Ages, moving beyond some of the earlier canonical "raw materials", such as Einhard's Vita Karoli Magni, to focus on productions of the eleventh to fifteenth centuries. A distinctive feature of the volume's coverage is the diversity of Latin textual environments and genres that the contributors examine in their work, including chronicles, liturgy and pseudo-histories, as well as apologetical treatises and works of hagiography and literature. Perhaps most importantly, the book examines the "many lives" that Charlemagne was believed to have lived by successive generations of medieval Latin writers, for whom he was not only a king and an emperor but also a saint, a crusader, and, indeed, a necrophiliac. William J. Purkis is a Senior Lecturer in Medieval History at the University of Birmingham; Matthew Gabriele is an Associate Professor of Medieval Studies in the Department of Religion & Culture at Virginia Tech. Contributors: Jeffrey Doolittle, Matthew Gabriele, Miguel Dolan Gomez, Oren Margolis, William J. Purkis, Andrew J. Romig, Sebastian Salvado, Jace Stuckey, James Williams.

The conservation of cultural heritage is a major commitment for all countries around the world, since it is a complex task and a matter of great responsibility. Amongst other sectors of society, science has a contribution to make to heritage preservation. This book is the result of the international conference aEUROoeHeritage, Weathering and ConservationaEURO (HWC2006), held in Madrid, Spain in 2006. It brought together prominent scientists and professionals from a variety of disciplines who have been active in the field and have raised the profile of heritage preservation. The main aspects addressed at this conference were those related to the causes of decay of cultural materials (stone, ceramics, metals, paintings, mortars, timber, adobes, etc); the characterization of their properties and the assessment of analytical techniques for their study, with a focus on non-destructive techniques. Many of the studies stress the importance of salt crystallization, atmospheric pollution and biodeterioration and relate these specific factors to decay. A variety of case studies are included, as well as an examination of policies and management. This book will be useful to professionals and scientists working in a variety of fields related to heritage: geologists, geographers, chemists, physicists, biologists, architects, engineers, restorers, historians, archaeologists, policy makers and the general public.

Miguel Gomes directs this romantic drama, which pays homage to the silent films of F.W. Murnau and Robert J. Flaherty. Filmed in black and white, the film is divided into two parts, the first half takes up the story from the point of view of Pilar (Teresa Madruga), a middle-aged political activist whose neighbour Aurora (Laura Soveral) is a senile old lady with a gambling addiction and a propensity to tell colourful tales about her past in Mozambique. As Aurora's health starts to decline, she asks Pilar to track down a man called Ventura (Henrique Espírito Santo), with whom she had a passionate affair as a newly-married young woman. The second part of the film details the affair between the beautiful young Aurora (Ana Moreira) and her Portuguese lover (Carloto Cotta), revealing their secret passion that unfolded in Africa over half an century previously.

Eugenio Montejo; Translated by Peter Boyle; Introduction by Miguel Gomes
R435 Discovery Miles 4 350 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Winner 2004 International Octavio Paz Prize for Poetry. Featuring "La Tierra Giro para Acercarnos" (The Earth Turned to Bring Us Closer) from the Oscar-nominated film 21 Grams, this new translation of selected poems and prose by Venezuela's leading poet Eugenio Montejo is translated from the original Spanish by Australian poet Peter Boyle. Covering Montejo's work from the 1960s to 2004 this major selection deals with universal themes of loss, death, family and love as well as reflecting on humanity's relationship to nature in an ever more materialistic and urbanized world. Montejo's poetry would be of special interest to all readers of poetry as well as to those interested in understanding a Latin American perspective on modernization and globalization.
