This book provides an up-to-date account of blind children's developing communicative abilities with particular emphasis on social cognition and language acquisition from infancy to early school age. It purports to foster dialogue between those interested in the study of typically developing children and those interested in the development of children who are blind and to provide insights and new explanations of why the development of blind children may differ from that of sighted children. The book also aims to identify and examine current theoretical issues which are likely to be at the centre of developments in the fields of child language and developmental psychology. Language Development and Social Interaction in Blind Children is also a timely book. The study of blind children's development constitutes a unique opportunity to study the effect of vision on development, and more specifically on the development of language and certain aspects of social cognition. Current interest in the development of "theory of mind" and perspective taking in language learning, make the case of blind children crucial to our understanding of certain aspects of psychological functioning. The book explores these issues, challenges some widely-held beliefs about the development of communication in blind children, and provides a cohesive picture of our knowledge to date.

In the poorest neighborhoods of Santiago, Chile, low-income
residents known as pobladores have long lived at the margins-and
have long advocated for the right to housing as part of la vida
digna (a life with dignity). From 2011 to 2015, anthropologist
Miguel Perez conducted fieldwork among the pobladores of Santiago,
where the urban dwellers and activists he met were part of an
emerging social movement that demanded dignified living conditions,
the right to remain in their neighborhoods of origin, and, more
broadly, recognition as citizens entitled to basic rights. This
ethnographic account raises questions about state policies that
conceptualize housing as a commodity rather than a right, and how
poor urban dwellers seek recognition and articulate political
agency against the backdrop of neoliberal policies. By scrutinizing
how Chilean pobladores constitute themselves as political subjects,
this book reveals the mechanisms through which housing activists
develop new imaginaries of citizenship in a country where the
market has been the dominant force organizing social life for
almost forty years. Perez considers the limits and potentialities
of urban movements, framed by poor people's involvement in
subsidy-based programs, as well as the capacity of low-income
residents to struggle against the commodification of rights by
claiming the right to dignity: a demand based on a moral category
that would ultimately become the driving force behind Chile's 2019
social uprising.

Shortlisted for the 2014 BAAL Book Prize This book explores the
meaning of modernization in contemporary Chinese education. It
examines the implications of the implementation of reforms in
English language education for experimental-urban schools in the
People's Republic of China. Perez-Milans sheds light on how
national, linguistic, and cultural ideologies linked to
modernization are being institutionally (re)produced, legitimated,
and inter-personally negotiated through everyday practice in the
current context of Chinese educational reforms. He places special
emphasis on those reforms regarding English language education,
with respect to the economic processes of globalization that are
shaping (and being shaped by) the contemporary Chinese
nation-state. In particular, the book analyzes the processes of
institutional categorization of the "good experimental school", the
"good student", and the "appropriate knowledge" that emerge from
the daily discursive organization of those schools, with special
attention to the related contradictions, uncertainties and
dilemmas. Thus, it provides an account of the on-going cultural
processes of change faced by contemporary Chinese educational
institutions under conditions of late modernity. Winner of The

-A classic text offering the only comprehensive survey of the
research in this field. -Provides explanations of why the
development of blind children may differ from that of sighted
children. -Offers insight into the effect of vision on development
more generally, and more specifically on the development of
language and certain aspects of social cognition. -A new
introduction from Miguel Perez-Pereira highlights the current
context for the work, its impact as well as the latest research and
tensions in the field.
This Handbook provides a state-of-the-art account of research in
language policy and planning (LPP). Through a critical examination
of LPP, the Handbook offers new direction for a field in
theoretical and methodological turmoil as a result of the
socio-economic, institutional, and discursive processes of change
taking place under the conditions of Late Modernity. Late Modernity
refers to the widespread processes of late capitalism leading to
the selective privatization of services (including education), the
information revolution associated with rapidly changing statuses
and functions of languages, the weakening of the institutions of
nation-states (along with the strengthening of non-state actors),
and the fragmentation of overlapping and competing identities
associated with new complexities of language-identity relations and
new forms of multilingual language use. As an academic discipline
in the social sciences, LPP is fraught with tensions between these
processes of change and the still-powerful ideological framework of
modern nationalism. It is an exciting and energizing time for LPP
research. This Handbook propels the field forward, offering a
dialogue between the two major historical trends in LPP associated
with the processes of Modernity and Late Modernity: the focus on
continuity behind the institutional policies of the modern
nation-state, and the attention to local processes of uncertainty
and instability across different settings resulting from processes
of change. The Handbook takes great strides toward overcoming the
long-standing division between "top-down" and "bottom-up" analysis
in LPP research, setting the stage for theoretical and
methodological innovation. Part I defines alternative theoretical
and conceptual frameworks in LPP, emphasizing developments since
the ethnographic turn, including: ethnography in LPP;
historical-discursive approaches; ethics, normative theorizing, and
transdisciplinary methods; and the renewed focus on socio-economic
class. Part II examines LPP against the background of influential
ideas about language shaped by the institutions of the
nation-state, with close attention to the social position of
minority languages and specific communities facing profound
language policy challenges. Part III investigates the turmoil and
tensions that currently characterize LPP research under conditions
of Late Modernity. Finally, Part IV presents an integrative summary
and directions for future LPP research.

Surrealismo: el oro del tiempo, en sus dos tomos que reunen la
actualidad de los ultimos cinco anos, evidencia la continuidad y la
permanencia, tanto individual como colectiva, de la aventura
surrealista, cuyo caracter revolucionario, independiente y
