First there is the killing of the minister of energy. Then the cop investigating the murder commits suicide. Fearing a conspiracy, the minister’s lover hires pi Fish Pescado to find the killer. Then she goes missing. And Fish is being stonewalled by the cops because in the dark shadows of Cape Town there’s another game being played out. A complex one involving Iranian agents, the theft of highly enriched uranium, the kidnapping of a top scientist, and ex-spy Vicki Kahn being bribed by her former handler to track the terrorists. The hunt is deadly and nothing is what it seems. A sleeper has been awoken. ISIS is involved. So is the CIA. And chatter leads to talk of a dirty bomb...
Who polices the police?
Late one afternoon on the steps of St George’s Cathedral in Cape Town, the leader of opposition forces in the Central African Republic (CAR) is gunned down. He survives, but his young daughter is killed. Private investigator Fish Pescado is called in, but his attempts to locate the hitmen come to nothing – hardly surprising, as the assassination attempt was organised by a faction in the South African Secret Service Agency (SSA) loyal to the South African president, who has mining interests in the CAR. Meanwhile Vicki Kahn, an agent in the SSA, is sent to Amsterdam to set up a sting operation to trap the president’s son who is involved in a human trafficking operation. When Fish, Vicki’s long-time love interest, learns that Vicki is in danger, he needs to take action.
Mace Bishop and Pylon Buso offer guarding services to the rich in Cape Town, but they want out: tired of the egos and of being shot at, they invest dirty money in a property deal. Obed Chocho is their ruthless opposing bidder and his lawyer, Sheemina February, is as manipulative as he. Part of her agenda concerns her past with Mace. In this mix is Judge Telman Visser, the head of a commission of inquiry into an arms deal scandal, and a son worried that his aging parents aren't safe on their farm. Mace is hired to protect them, taking his daughter along for the ride. But Chocho and February send a hitman, Spitz, to take out Visser's parents. And with Mace and Pylon well used to taking matters into their own hands, they need to track down the killer and play judge and executioner in an attempt to right some wrongs. But they have not factored into the intrigue the role of Sheemina February. Or her wrath.

With the passing of this extraordinary man the only joy can be to celebrate what he has left behind, his extraordinary patience and compassion, his passion for justice and reconciliation. This book explores the story he shared with all his fellow South Africans. It looks at themes which have dominated Nelson Mandela's life - his leadership, his attitude to the law and justice; democracy and human rights, and the value he placed on education. With extraordinary insight, author Mike Nicol, makes us acutely aware of Mandela the man - his courage, principles and generosity of spirit. There are many books written about Mandela but his story is too great to be told by one voice or from one viewpoint. The sensitive and accessible text is accompanied by over 80 photographs and regalia and contains a timeline of South African events mapped against key world events. A unique feature of the book is the 40 minute CD, of this icon's most famous speeches - Nelson Mandela in his own words.
An acclaimed author reconsiders Cape Town, past and present, as he resettles in a changed environment after a year-long sojourn in Berlin.
When a dead man's laptop computer is mysteriously delivered to Robert Poley, he abandons work on his latest "airport" thriller to investigate the murder of the computer's previous owner, Christo Mercer. Poley discovers that Mercer was an illegal arms trader, fatally stabbed in a remote town in the Sahara. His life was haunted by nightmares of his past, and by his clandestine involvement with a ruthless rebel. Poley begins to recognize a pattern of corruption as severe as South Africa's in the aftermath of apartheid. A chilling story of murder that masterfully evokes South Africa's recent past.
"A dark and terrifying novel presenting a mythical account of the development of evil through the history of Southern Africa."--Seattle Times. This ferocious new novel by one of South Africa's visionary writers is a post-colonial reimagining of the Book of Revelation--an unholy epic that reenvisions the catastrophic violence of European "civilization" as a hooded rider who spreads slaughter across the African continent--a work that is as unnerving as it is intellectually provocative.
Compared to Faulkner, Grass, Kafka, and Rushdie, after his acclaimed debut The Powers That Be, Nicol now presents a work of tremendous literary and political resonance. His rise foretold by an oracle, a black messiah in the parched South African veld abandons his plague-ridden village to wander the desert, gathering the poor and disenfranchised--only to incur the wrath of the government.
