This book is for people who teach calculus – and especially for
people who teach student teachers, who will in turn teach calculus.
The calculus considered is elementary calculus of a single
variable. The book interweaves ideas for teaching with calculus
content and provides a reader-friendly overview of research on
learning and teaching calculus along with questions on educational
and mathematical discussion topics. Written by a group of
international authors with extensive experience in teaching and
research on learning/teaching calculus both at the school and
university levels, the book offers a variety of approaches to the
teaching of calculus so that you can decide the approach for you.
Topics covered include A history of calculus and how calculus
differs over countries today Making sense of limits and continuity,
differentiation, integration and the fundamental theorem of
calculus (chapters on these areas form the bulk of the book) The
ordering of calculus concepts (should limits come first?)
Applications of calculus (including differential equations). The
final chapter looks beyond elementary calculus. Recurring themes
across chapters include whether to take a limit or a
differential/infinitesimal approach to calculus and the use of
digital technology in the learning and teaching of calculus. This
book is essential reading for mathematics teacher trainers
everywhere.

This book uniquely combines CBT with the Department of Health
stepped care model to provide the first comprehensive case
study-approach textbook. A step-by-step guide to using CBT, the
book is structured around case studies of clients who present with
the most commonly encountered conditions; from mild to more
complex, enduring symptoms and diagnosis. This distinctive
practical format is ideal in showing how to put the principles of
CBT and stepped care into effect. As well as echoing postgraduate
level training, it provides an insight into the experiences the
trainee will encounter in real-world practice. Each chapter
addresses a specific client condition and covers initial referral,
presentation and assessment, case formulation, treatment
interventions, evaluation of CBT strategies and discharge planning.
Specific presenting problems covered include: - First onset and
chronic Depression - Social Phobia - Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder
- Generalised Anxiety Disorder (GAD) - Chronic Bulimia Nervosa and
Anorexia nervosa - Alcohol Addiction - Personality Disorder The
book also includes practical learning exercises for the reader and
clinical hints, as well as extensive reference to further CBT
research, resources and reading. This timely text will be
invaluable for trainees on Improving Access to Psychological
Therapies (IAPT) programmes, and anyone studying on postgraduate
CBT courses.
According to the Hindu philosopher Shankara, all things, from
Brahman the Creator down to a single blade of grass, are simply
appearance and not real. Illusion or not, the young Arthur Butler
existed in his own time and place, until at the age of nineteen,
during the Battle of the Marne in in July 1918 his heart stopped
beating, his blood stopped flowing and he died alone in France. He
never married, he never raised chldren. He never got up on cold
mornings to go to work; he never lost his job in the Thirties nor
did he make his fortune. He never caught colds, never experienced
true love; never came home late at night. In fact he never even
came home. He lies where he died at the foot of a narrow, elongated
vineyard. And then he was granted a second chance. An opportunity
to be himself, for good or bad, wherever and however he wished.
Paul Rapson leaves London for California to find a girl he'd spent
thirty minutes talking to in a street over twenty five years
before. A girl who changed his life. In America he discovers that
the girl disappeared off the face of the earth in 1982. Connie
Singh has lost it all. Everything. There's just one thing left for
her to do. She retraces her Mexican grandmother's footsteps from
the arid Baja California to San Diego, re-enacting the journey her
grandmother had made as a young girl in search of a new life north
of the border. When the journey ends Connie realises that she must
embark on a mission to the UK to find the man she met briefly many
years ago and share with him the reason for her loss. Paul and
Connie's paths cross in this psychological drama of lost love,
confusion and death.
