Narrative Factuality - A Handbook (Hardcover): Monika Fludernik, Marie-Laure Ryan Narrative Factuality - A Handbook (Hardcover)
Monika Fludernik, Marie-Laure Ryan
R5,850 Discovery Miles 58 500 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The study of narrative-the object of the rapidly growing discipline of narratology-has been traditionally concerned with the fictional narratives of literature, such as novels or short stories. But narrative is a transdisciplinary and transmedial concept whose manifestations encompass both the fictional and the factual. In this volume, which provides a companion piece to Tobias Klauk and Tilmann Koeppe's Fiktionalitat: Ein interdisziplinares Handbuch, the use of narrative to convey true and reliable information is systematically explored across media, cultures and disciplines, as well as in its narratological, stylistic, philosophical, and rhetorical dimensions. At a time when the notion of truth has come under attack, it is imperative to reaffirm the commitment to facts of certain types of narrative, and to examine critically the foundations of this commitment. But because it takes a background for a figure to emerge clearly, this book will also explore nonfactual types of narratives, thereby providing insights into the nature of narrative fiction that could not be reached from the narrowly literary perspective of early narratology.

Theoretical and textual analyses help illustrate the common features between everyday discourse and literature, and show the potentials for a collaborative approach between literary scholars and linguists in understanding speech acts and reference; inference, cognitive and cultural background; rhetoric, styles of speaking and writing; as well as perspectives and genres.

Beyond Cognitive Metaphor Theory - Perspectives on Literary Metaphor (Paperback): Monika Fludernik Beyond Cognitive Metaphor Theory - Perspectives on Literary Metaphor (Paperback)
Monika Fludernik; Series edited by Michael Burke
R1,658 Discovery Miles 16 580 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

In this innovative collection, an international group of scholars come together to discuss literary metaphors and cognitive metaphor theory. The volume's goals are three-fold. The first aim of the book is to present some recent approaches to metaphor which have no immediate connection with cognitive metaphor theory and have developed independently of it. While the cognitive approach has become the leading paradigm in the English speaking world, elsewhere (in Europe) rhetorical, semantic, and logical models have remained in use and continue to be elaborated. These models have so far had little international exposure. Their inclusion in this study is meant to provide a balance to the cognitive paradigm and to open up a possible discussion of the advantages and disadvantages of cognitive metaphor theory for the analysis of literary texts. The second aim of the collection is to illustrate a range of successful applications of the new cognitive models to literary texts. And, the third aim of the study is to provide an assessment of cognitive metaphor theory from a literary point of view.

Towards a 'Natural' Narratology (Hardcover, New): Monika Fludernik Towards a 'Natural' Narratology (Hardcover, New)
Monika Fludernik
R4,305 Discovery Miles 43 050 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

In this ground breaking work of synthesis, Monika Fludernik combines insights from literary theory and linguistics to provide a challenging new theory of narrative.
This book is both an historical survey and theoretical study, with the author drawing on an enormous range of examples from the earliest oral study to contemporary experimental fiction. She uses these examples to prove that recent literature, far from heralding the final collapse of narrative, represents the epitome of a centuries long developmental process.

The Fictions of Language and the Languages of Fiction (Hardcover, New): Monika Fludernik The Fictions of Language and the Languages of Fiction (Hardcover, New)
Monika Fludernik
R5,309 Discovery Miles 53 090 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Monika Fludernik presents a detailed analysis of free indirect discourse, as it relates to narrative theory and the representation of speech and thought in fiction. Building on the insights of Ann Banfield's "Unspeakable Sentences", Fludernick extends Banfield's model to accommodate evidence from conversational narrative, non-fictional prose and literary works from Chaucer to the present. Fludernick's model subsumes earlier insights into the forms and functions of quotation and aligns them with discourse strategies observable in the oral language. She also introduces English readers to extensive work on the subject in German and compares the free indirect discourse features of English, French and German. The study effectively repositions the whole area between literature and linguistics, opening up a new set of questions in narrative theory. The author draws on a vast range of literature, and on this basis alone, the book should be an invaluable resource for researchers in the field.

Metaphors of Confinement - The Prison in Fact, Fiction, and Fantasy (Hardcover): Monika Fludernik Metaphors of Confinement - The Prison in Fact, Fiction, and Fantasy (Hardcover)
Monika Fludernik
R3,865 Discovery Miles 38 650 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Metaphors of Confinement: The Prison in Fact, Fiction, and Fantasy offers a historical survey of imaginings of the prison as expressed in carceral metaphors in a range of texts about imprisonment from Antiquity to the present as well as non-penal situations described as confining or restrictive. These imaginings coalesce into a 'carceral imaginary' that determines the way we think about prisons, just as social debates about punishment and criminals feed into the way carceral imaginary develops over time. Examining not only English-language prose fiction but also poetry and drama from the Middle Ages to postcolonial, particularly African, literature, the book juxtaposes literary and non-literary contexts and contrasts fictional and nonfictional representations of (im)prison(ment) and discussions about the prison as institution and experiential reality. It comments on present-day trends of punitivity and foregrounds the ethical dimensions of penal punishment. The main argument concerns the continuity of carceral metaphors through the centuries despite historical developments that included major shifts in policy (such as the invention of the penitentiary). The study looks at selected carceral metaphors, often from two complementary perspectives, such as the home as prison or the prison as home, or the factory as prison and the prison as factory. The case studies present particularly relevant genres and texts that employ these metaphors, often from a historical perspective that analyses development through different periods.

The Fictions of Language and the Languages of Fiction (Paperback): Monika Fludernik The Fictions of Language and the Languages of Fiction (Paperback)
Monika Fludernik
R1,691 Discovery Miles 16 910 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Monika Fludernik presents a detailed analysis of free indirect discourse as it relates to narrative theory, and the crucial problematic of how speech and thought are represented in fiction. Building on the insights of Ann Banfield's Unspeakable Sentences, Fludernik radically extends Banfield's model to accommodate evidence from conversational narrative, non-fictional prose and literary works from Chaucer to the present. Fludernik's model subsumes earlier insights into the forms and functions of quotation and aligns them with discourse strategies observable in the oral language. Drawing on a vast range of literature, she provides an invaluable resource for researchers in the field and introduces English readers to extensive work on the subject in German as well as comparing the free indirect discourse features of German, French and English. Postclassical Narratology - Approaches and Analyses (Paperback): Jan Alber, Monika Fludernik Postclassical Narratology - Approaches and Analyses (Paperback)
Jan Alber, Monika Fludernik
R1,223 Discovery Miles 12 230 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

In this volume, an international group of contributors presents new perspectives on narrative. Using David Herman's 1999 definition of "postclassical narratology" from Narratologies: New Perspectives on Narrative Analysis (OSUP) as their launching point, these eleven essayists explore the various ways in which new approaches overlap and interrelate to form new ways of understanding narrative texts. Postclassical narratology has reached a new phase of consolidation but also continued diversification. This collection therefore discriminates between what one could call a critical but frame-abiding and a more radical frame-transcending or frame-shattering handling of the structuralist paradigm. Postclassical Narratology: Approaches and Analyses discusses a large variety of different aspects of narrative, such as extensions of classical narratology, new generic applications (autobiography, oral narratives, poetry, painting, and film), the history of narratology, the issue of fictionality, the role of cognition, and questions of authorship and authority, as well as thematic matters related to ethics, gender, and queering. Additionally, it uses a wide spectrum of critical approaches, including feminism, psychoanalysis, media studies, the rhetorical theory of narrative, unnatural narratology, and cognitive studies. In this manner the essays manage to produce new insights into many key issues in narratology.

The contributors also demonstrate that narratologists nowadays see the object of their research as more variegated than was the case twenty years ago: they resort to a number of different methods in combination when approaching a problem, and they tend to ground their analyses in a rich contextual framework.

Bill Ashcroft, Victor Li, Wang Ning, Pamela McCallum; Edited by Pamela McCallum; Contributions by …
R1,101 Discovery Miles 11 010 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

During the past two decades, postcolonial studies has proven to be one of the fastest growing fields of critical inquiry. Postcolonialism has established itself as an important specialist field within literature disciplines, and it has strong resonances across other disciplines (history, sociology, anthropology, geography, cultural studies) and is a field which has inspired genuinely interdisciplinary research. Linked Histories: Postcolonial Studies in a Globalized World, collected from the journal ARIEL (A Review of International English Literataure), take up some of the most pressing issues in postcolonial debates: the challenges which new theories of globalization present for postcolonial studies, the difficulties of rethinking how "marginality" might be defined in a new globalized world, the problems of imagining social transformation within globalization. The editors' goal in bringing together this collection of articles is not to provide any definitive statement on these urgent questions; rather, it is to assemble a group of essays which "think through" the issues and which therefore has the potential to move the discipline forward. The contributors represented include a balance of senior scholars with international reputations and scholars who represent the next generation. Travelling Concepts: New Fictionality Studies (Hardcover, New edition): Monika Fludernik, Henrik Nielsen Travelling Concepts: New Fictionality Studies (Hardcover, New edition)
Monika Fludernik, Henrik Nielsen
R2,144 Discovery Miles 21 440 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This volume is co-edited by the director of the Freiburg graduate school "Factual and Fictional Narration" (GRK 1767, Freiburg/Germany) and the director of the Aarhus Centre for Fictionality Studies (University of Aarhus, DK). The collection of essays re-examines the much discussed fact fiction distinction in light of the current burgeoning of research on fictionality. It provides a forum for ongoing work on fictionality from France, Germany and Denmark and Sweden. By placing discussions of the notion of fictionality in one volume, the editors hope to initiate exchange between the different traditions represented in the essays und to help the task of translating the available concepts and terminologies so they can travel between different models and theoretical frameworks.

In the Grip of the Law - Trials, Prisons and the Space Between (Paperback): Monika Fludernik, Greta Olson In the Grip of the Law - Trials, Prisons and the Space Between (Paperback)
Monika Fludernik, Greta Olson
R2,844 Discovery Miles 28 440 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book contributes significantly to Law and Literature studies. Arguing for the political relevance of their work, the editors open the volume with an introduction that summarizes topical developments in law enforcement and penal politics including the 'prisonization' of American society and popular support for « no tolerance approaches to crime. The fourteen essays that follow - six on trials and eight on prisons - discuss subjects ranging from the political ramifications of Captain Kidd's trials for piracy to a reading of South African prison memoirs and include treatments of prison films, courtroom dramas and works by Dickens, Shakespeare and Scott. The volume demonstrates powerfully how concepts of criminality are constructed and how literature participates in, and sometimes enhances, general discursive traditions of adversarial litigation and carcerality.
