Unlike some other reproductions of classic texts (1) We have not
used OCR(Optical Character Recognition), as this leads to bad
quality books with introduced typos. (2) In books where there are
images such as portraits, maps, sketches etc We have endeavoured to
keep the quality of these images, so they represent accurately the
original artefact. Although occasionally there may be certain
imperfections with these old texts, we feel they deserve to be made
available for future generations to enjoy.

Methane and its oxidation product, methanol, have occupied an
important position in the chemical industry for many years: the
former as a feedstock, the latter as a primary chemical from which
many products are produced. More recently, the role played by
methane as a potent "greenhouse" gas has aroused considerable
attention from environmentalists and clima tologists alike. This
role for C compounds has, of course, been quite 1 incidental to the
myriad of microorganisms on this planet that have adapted their
life-styles to take advantage of these readily available am bient
sources. Methane, a renewable energy source that will always be
with us, is actually a difficult molecule to activate; so any
microorganism that can effect this may point the way to catalytic
chemists looking for con trollable methane oxidation. Methanol,
formed as a breakdown product of plant material, is also ubiquitous
and has also encouraged the growth of prokaryotes and eukaryotes
alike. In an attempt to give a balanced view of how microorganisms
have been able to exploit these simple carbon sources, we have
asked a number ofleading scientists (modesty forbids our own
inclusion here) to contribute chapters on their specialist areas of
the subject."

A volume in Research in Mathematics Education Series Editor Barbara
J. Dougherty, University of Mississippi The purpose of this book is
to document the work of the Show-Me Project (1997-2007) and to
highlight lessons learned about curriculum implementation. Although
the Show-Me Project was charged with promoting the dissemination
and implementation of four distinct comprehensive curriculum
programs (Connected Mathematics, Mathematics in Context, MathScape,
and MathThematics), most of the lessons learned from this work are
not curriculum specific. Rather, they cut across the four programs
and share commonalities with standards-based curriculum reform at
any level. We believe that documenting these lessons learned will
be one of the legacies of the Show-Me Project We anticipate that
the comprehensive nature of this work will attract readers from
multiple audiences that include state and district mathematics
supervisors, middle grades mathematics teachers and administrators
involved in curriculum reform, as well as mathematics teacher
educators. Those about to embark on the review of curriculum
materials will appreciate reading about the processes employed by
other districts. Readers with interests in a particular curriculum
program will be able to trace the curriculum-specific chapters to
gain insights into how the design of the curricula relate to
professional development, adoption and implementation issues, and
teachers' personal experience using the curriculum materials.
Individuals who provide professional development at the middle
grades level will find chapters that they can use for both general
and focused discussions. Teachers at all stages of implementation
will recognize their own experiences in reading and reflecting on
the stories of teacher change. Mathematics educators will find
ideas on how these curricula can be used in the preparation of
preservice middle grades teachers.
This open access book highlights concepts discussed at two
international conferences that brought together world-renowned
scientists to advance the science of potassium (K) recommendations
for crops. There was general agreement that the potassium
recommendations currently in general use are oversimplified,
outdated, and jeopardize soil, plant, and human health.
Accordingly, this book puts forward a significantly expanded K
cycle that more accurately depicts K inputs, losses and
transformations in soils. This new cycle serves as both the
conceptual basis for the scientific discussions in this book and a
framework upon which to build future improvements. Previously used
approaches are critically reviewed and assessed, not only for their
relevance to future enhancements, but also for their use as metrics
of sustainability. An initial effort is made to link K nutrition in
crops and K nutrition in humans. The book offers an invaluable
asset for graduate students, educators, industry scientists, data
scientists, and advanced agronomists.

The first publication on the personal and professional relationship
between Manet and Degas, two giants of nineteenth-century French
art  Friends, rivals, and at times antagonists, Édouard
Manet and Edgar Degas maintained a pictorial dialogue throughout
their lives as they both worked to define the painting of modern
urban life. Manet/Degas, the first book to consider their careers
in parallel, investigates how their objectives overlapped,
diverged, and shaped each other’s artistic choices. Enlivened by
archival correspondence and records of firsthand accounts, essays
by American and French scholars take a fresh look at the artists’
family relationships, literary friendships, and interconnected
social and intellectual circles in Paris; explore their complex
depictions of race and class; discuss their political views in the
context of wars in France and the United States; compare their
artistic practices; and examine how Degas built his personal
collection of works by Manet after his friend’s premature death.
An illustrated biographical chronology charts their intersecting
lives and careers. This lavishly illustrated, in-depth study offers
an opportunity to reevaluate some of the most canonical French
artworks of the nineteenth century, including Manet’s Olympia,
Degas’s The Absinthe Drinker, and other masterworks. Â

successful. Summaries of each treatment strategy are accompanied by
detailed discussions of treatment choices, with ratings on a
consistent scale ranging from clinical studies to anecdotal
reports. Puts every possible therapeutic option at your disposal -
including management strategies, first- to third-line therapies,
and off-label uses - for a truly complete guide to the vast array
of dermatologic treatment options. Features 4 all-new chapters on
COVID-19 dermatoses, including the associated pediatric multisystem
inflammatory syndrome; DRESS syndrome; keratosis lichenoides
chronica; and tinea corporis and tinea cruris. Presents information
in a consistent, tabular format, with checklists of diagnostic and
investigative pearls and color-coded boxes for quick reference.

references from the book on a variety of devices.
This book reveals that 'fixers'-local experts on whom foreign
correspondents rely-play a much more significant role in
international television newsgathering than has been documented or
understood. Murrell explores the frames though which international
reporting has traditionally been analysed and then shows that
fixers, who have largely been dismissed by scholars as 'logistical
aides', are in fact central to the day-to-day decision-making that
takes place on-the-road. Murrell looks at why and how fixers are
selected and what their significance is to foreign correspondence.
She asks if fixers help introduce a local perspective into the
international news agenda, or if fixers are simply 'People Like Us'
(PLU). Also included are in-depth case studies of correspondents in
Iraq and Indonesia.
Providing key information on how to work with research data,
Introduction to Data Technologies presents ideas and techniques for
performing critical, behind-the-scenes tasks that take up so much
time and effort yet typically receive little attention in formal
education. With a focus on computational tools, the book shows
readers how to improve their awareness of what tasks can be
achieved and describes the correct approach to perform these tasks.
Practical examples demonstrate the most important pointsThe author
first discusses how to write computer code using HTML as a concrete
example. He then covers a variety of data storage topics, including
different file formats, XML, and the structure and design issues of
relational databases. After illustrating how to extract data from a
relational database using SQL, the book presents tools and
techniques for searching, sorting, tabulating, and manipulating
data. It also introduces some very basic programming concepts as
well as the R language for statistical computing. Each of these
topics has supporting chapters that offer reference material on
HTML, CSS, XML, DTD, SQL, R, and regular expressions. One-stop shop
of introductory computing information Written by a member of the R
Development Core Team, this resource shows readers how to apply
data technologies to tasks within a research setting. Collecting
material otherwise scattered across many books and the web, it
explores how to publish information via the web, how to access
information stored in different formats, and how to write small
programs to automate simple, repetitive tasks.
