With this new edition by your side, you?ll quickly discover how
to make the most of every aspect of digital multimedia
Tunnelling provides a robust solution to a variety of engineering
challenges. It is a complex process, which requires a firm
understanding of the ground conditions as well as the importance of
ground-structure interaction. This book covers the full range of
areas related to tunnel construction required to embark upon a
career in tunnelling. It also includes a number of case studies
related to real tunnel projects, to demonstrate how the theory
applies in practice. New features of this second edition include:
the introduction of a case study related to Crossrail's project in
London, focussing on the Whitechapel and Liverpool Street station
tunnels and including considerations of building tunnels in a
congested urban area; and further information on recent
developments in tunnel boring machines, including further examples
of all the different types of machine as well as multi-mode
machines. The coverage includes: Both hard-rock and soft-ground
conditions Site investigation, parameter selection, and design
considerations Methods of improving the stability of the ground and
lining techniques Descriptions of the various main tunnelling
techniques Health and safety considerations Monitoring of tunnels
during construction Description of the latest tunnel boring
machines Case studies with real examples, including Crossrail's
project in London Clear, concise, and heavily illustrated, this is
a vital text for final-year undergraduate and MSc students and an
invaluable starting point for young professionals and novices in
tunnelling.
Simply the best introduction to all aspects of the design and
development of successful Web sites.
As the World Wide Web has matured, the need for high quality
education in all aspects of Web design has become widely
acknowledged. This book is a core text for undergraduate and
masters courses that provides a complete introduction to every
aspect of the building of Web pages and Web sites. A complete
understanding of the basics of all aspects of Web design is
essential to the development of good practice.
Starting from a review of Web experiences, the text provides a
deep and thorough introduction to Web technology, markup,
stylesheets, Web graphics, Web animation and embedded video,
client-side scripting, Web applications, usability, accessibility,
page design and site design. At all times, the focus remains on
good practice, underpinned by sound principles, in the context of
the real World Wide Web. Full coverage of the essential
technologies is provided: HTTP, XHTML, CSS, Javascript and the DOM,
and the use of Web Standards is emphasized throughout as an
essential part of the authors' forward-looking approach. Some
elementary programming knowledge is required for use of this
text.
Suitable for course use or self-study, this comprehensive
introduction represents a complete overview of the practice of Web
design, providing clear summaries and a wealth of exercises and
short practical assignments, as well as a valuable survey of the
most popular software tools used in Web design. An extensive
glossary and a wide rage of other supplementary material are
provided on the supporting Web site.
Also by Nigel and Jenny Chapman: "Digital Multimedia, 2e"
(0-470-85890-7) is a coretext for undergraduate and masters courses
in multimedia. It combines a broad and deep account of technology
with an inside understanding of multimedia content and its
practical applications. Coverage begins with the nature of
multimedia, including the cultural and social context, before
examining hardware and software requirements for its creation and
delivery. There are chapters devoted to each media type, detailing
how it is represented in digital form and what demands are placed
on computer systems. Later chapters cover design principles and
accessibility, XML and its applications to multimedia, creating
interaction through scripting and networking media. There are
end-of-chapter exercises as well as detailed suggestions for
substantial projects.
Louis P. Hammett Mitchill Professor Emeritus of Chemistry, Columbia
University My interest in linear free energy relationships began
when, just out of graduate school, I read in 1924 the article by
Bmnsted and Pedersen which for the first time reported the
existence of such a relationship. That interest continues to be an
active one and, to judge merely by the extensive biblio graphies
contained in the present volume, it is widely shared. To my mind a
particularly happy aspect of the existence of linear free energy
relationships has been the proof it supplies that one need not
suppose that the behavior of nature is hopelessly complicated
merely because one cannot find a theoretical reason for supposing
it to be otherwise. The effect of a substituent in an organic
molecule on rate or equilibrium of reaction involves a fourfold
difference between relatively large quantities, a situation which
always makes for difficult theory. Yet systematic organic chemistry
could hardly have existed were it not true that like changes in
structure lead to like changes in reactivity. Linear free energy
relationships constitute the quantitative specialisation of this
fundamental principle, and they stand indeed more in the office of
teacher to theory than in that of learner from it."
This book, Correlation Analysis in Chemistry: Recent Advances, is a
sequel to our Advances in Linear Free Energy Relationships. t The
change in the title is designed to reflect more accurately the
nature of the field and the contents of the volume. The term LFER
is still widely used, but it is often applied rather loosely to
correlation equations that are not LFER in the restricted sense of
a relationship involving logarithms of rate or equili brium
constants on each side of the equation. The term "correlation
analysis" seems to us more appropriate for the whole subject. The
use of this term has compelled us also to introduce "chemistry"
into the title; we have preferred not to prefix this with "organic"
on the grounds that several areas of interest are not "organic
chemistry" as usually understood, al though, of course, traditional
applications of the basic relationships asso ciated with the names
of Hammett and of Taft continue to be of interest. In the first
volume we sought through our authors to provide a series of general
articles covering the various aspects of the field as they seemed
to us. Since the book was the first international research
monograph in its field, each chapter, while giving prominence to
recent developments, did not neglect earlier work, so that each
article presented a comprehensive account of its own area."
"Digital Media Tools" is a clearly focused and highly accessible
introduction to the major software tools used for creating digital
graphics, web animation and web pages, suitable for course use or
self-study. Its unique approach provides substantial
chapter-by-chapter coverage of each of the industry-leading
applications and uses practical and engaging exercises to help you
gain a clear understanding of each tool and feature. Based on the
authors' extensive experience in both using and teaching these
tools, this book provides a comprehensive insight into both the
technology and the theory underpinning its use in everyday
practice.
The third edition of this very successful textbook has been
completely revised to provide fully up to date coverage of the
latest (CS3) versions of Photoshop, Flash, Illustrator and
Dreamweaver, along with new coverage of Bridge and chapters devoted
to interface features and shared concepts. Fully updated and
extended with numerous new illustrations and examples, learning
features and web resources (available on the brand new companion
site), this book is a complete introduction to this vital range of
software tools.
