God always has a word to comfort, to encourage, to guide, and
also to remind us of His love towards us and His presence in our
lives.

situations in life, whether they are pleasant or unpleasant, God is
right there with us, inspiring us to live. Poetry was God's way of
drawing me much closer to Him, and as God inspired me, I wrote,

Wisdom through easy-to-grasp phrases. Biblical and cultural
proverbs have been cherished throughout the ages. One reason for
their enduring influence is that they reveal deeper wisdom through
easy-to-grasp phrases. They form our lives by offering wisdom we
can hold onto and use in life's most complex situations. In the
increasingly complex world of modern ministry, it has become harder
for pastors and church leaders to act wisely when the models for
ministry keep changing. Ministry Proverbs is a collection of 60
proverbs that the Rev. Dr. Graham Standish has developed over the
years to guide his own ministry. These are proverbs such as "We are
only responsible for our efforts. God is responsible for the
results. So be responsible for your part, and let God be
responsible for God's part. Wisdom comes in learning to tell the
difference." Each proverb is followed by 4-6 paragraphs of
reflection that take the reader deeper into the ramifications and
applications of the proverb. The reflections are intended to help
readers to apply the proverbs in their own ministries, and to
remember them so that when they face a difficult or uncertain
situation, they can tap into the wisdom.

In Finding Our Way to the Truth, Sarah Ciavarri explores lies of a
particularly insidious sort--lies masquerading as truths. These
lies can be so engrained in how we were raised, the culture we live
in, and the type of thinking that has kept us safe that we don't
notice how they inform our decisions and affect the way we lead,
work, parent, and live. The lies Ciavarri examines aren't the
obvious ones. They are sneaky--lies that can be benign, even
helpful, such as "I should finish what I start," "People must like
me," and "I'm responsible for it all." But these lies can keep us
from owning our ideas and strengths, following a dream, confronting
dysfunction, or enjoying deeper, more honest relationships. They
can replace a sense of well-being and hope with regret and
resentment.Ciavarri tells engaging personal stories to help readers
recognize seven common lies that leaders often tell themselves. She
then demonstrates a three-step process for unmasking each lie: pay
attention, examine, and apply the learning. We do better when we
stop listening to the lies. God wants better for us, and we were
created for better. Finding Our Way to the Truth shows us the way.
Vibrant worship services, argues creative and provocative author
Graham Standish, are those in which the congregation obviously asks
questions such as: Does our worship help people experience God?
Does our worship open people to the presence of Christ? Does our
worship encourage people to become available to the Holy Spirit?
Unfortunately, he observes, too many worship services are
perfunctory, suggesting that most churches don't think much about
how to connect people with God. In God's Presence makes the case
that congregations must restore intentionality and authenticity to
worship in a way that will open people to the Holy. Intentionality,
he says, reflects a deep understanding of what tradition has
attempted to do, what contemporary people are hungry for, what is
going on in our culture, and how to connect the three. Standish
advocates what he calls an 'integrated' approach to worship, one
that maintains the distinctiveness of each element of worship as a
counterpoint to other elements. He first explores the problem of
worship in the current church. Then he looks at ways to reconceive
worship with an emphasis on restoring the Holy to worship. Finally,
he looks at ways to lead a congregation to consider new ways of
worshiping. This book is about how to open people to an encounter
with the Holy in worship, how to follow God in this pursuit, and
how to lead those who have no interest in the Holy.
There comes a point at which leaderhsip can break down precisely
because of our success as leaders. When confidence turns to pride
and arrogance, we lose sight of the people that we have been called
to serve and become consumed with following our own vision. Graham
Standish offers a way forward that moves us through this paradox by
seeking to humbly follow God's plans rather than our own. Humble
leadership, grounded in the teachings of Jesus, means recognizing
that what we have and who we are is a gift from God, and our lives
should reflect our gratitude for this gift. It requires us to be
radically and creatively open to God's guidance, grace, and
presence in everything. When we lead out of such openness, God's
power and grace flow through us. The path Standish proposes is not
easy. Humble leadership can be personally dangerous, exposing our
weakness, powerlessness, fear, and anxiety. Our cultural need for
strength infects Christian leaders with a pride that causes them to
ignore biblical teachings on humility. But a humble leader says to
God, "I'm yours, no matter where you call me to go, what you call
me to do, and how you call me to be. I will seek your will and way
as I lead others to do the same."

In a time when competing and often irreconcilable belief systems
seem to dominate all religious conversation in Christianity, N.
Graham Standish offers an alternative for leading a spiritual and
faithful life. Providing models that embrace elements of many
spiritual traditions within Christianity, "Discovering the Narrow
Path" seeks to hold all extremist positions in perfect tension, by
integrating their essential truths yet also recognizing their
flaws. In doing so, Standish surveys the wisdom of the mystics, the
practice of forming a Trinitarian faith, the openness of healing
traditions, and the value of balancing prayer and action, as well
as spirituality, theology, and religion. Complete with two
appendices, one a guide for group study and one an introduction to
spiritual reading, "Discovering the Narrow Path" is an essential
resource for those seeking spiritual fulfillment.
To be strong, we have to be weak; to become mature we have to be
like children; to live we have to die...This book is an exploration
of how Christian paradoxes shape Christian faith. Reflecting on
these paradoxes, the author argues, can encourage our spiritual
growth and deepen our relationship with God. There are eight
chapters, each with questions for reflection and study, and two
appendices: 'An Introduction to Spiritual Reading' and 'A Guide for
Group Reflection'.
