Much ground has been covered in terms of (post)feminist analyses of
popular film and television, and box office successes such as
Bridget Jones's Diary and television phenomena such as Sex and the
City have become established parts of the now canonical critical
texts on postfeminism, media and popular culture. By analyzing the
negotiation of femininities and masculinities within contemporary
Hollywood cinema, by charting trends in film production and media
reception, and by focusing on the largely neglected intersections
between postfeminism and queer theory, Postfeminism and
Contemporary Hollywood Cinema presents diverse interrogations of
popular cinema. The chapters in this collection position
contemporary commercial production as a space where female
empowerment is both celebrated and undermined, and signal the
necessity of further debate surrounding the formation of gender
identity in postmillennial Hollywood cinema.
The Pathways series assists students in achieving the National
Certificate (Vocational) qualification. Pathways not only equips
students with the required knowledge, understanding and practical
skills, but also empowers them to apply this learning with
confidence in the classroom and ultimately in the workplace. Each
Pathways Student Book is clearly structured and easy to use. Each
topic covers every Subject Outcome, Learning Outcome and Assessment
Standard. Accessible, easy-to-understand language makes learning
easy. Concepts are clearly defined. A glossary at the beginning of
each topic clearly explains important words and terminology.

This book describes the multiple aspects of (i) preparation of the
magnetic core, (ii) the stabilization with different coatings,
(iii) the physico-chemical characterization and (iv) the
vectorization to obtain specific nanosystems. Several
bio-applications are also presented in this book. In the early days
of Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), paramagnetic ions were
proposed as contrast agents to enhance the diagnostic quality of MR
images. Since then, academic and industrial efforts have been
devoted to the development of new and more efficient molecular,
supramolecular and nanoparticular systems. Old concepts and
theories, like paramagnetic relaxation, were revisited and
exploited, leading to new scientific tracks. With their high
relaxivity payload, the superparamagnetic nanoparticles are very
appealing in the context of molecular imaging but challenges are
still numerous: absence of toxicity, specificity, ability to cross
the biological barriers, etc.
Knowledge of chimpanzees in the wild has expanded dramatically in
recent years. This comprehensive volume, edited by Martin Muller,
Richard Wrangham, and David Pilbeam, brings together scientists who
are leading a revolution to discover and explain what is unique
about humans, by studying their closest living relatives. Their
observations and conclusions have the potential to transform our
understanding of human evolution. Chimpanzees offer scientists an
unmatched view of what distinguishes humanity from its apelike
ancestors. Based on evidence from the hominin fossil record and
extensive morphological, developmental, and genetic data,
Chimpanzees and Human Evolution makes the case that the last common
ancestor of chimpanzees and humans was chimpanzee-like. It most
likely lived in African rainforests around eight million years ago,
eating fruit and walking on its knuckles. Readers will learn why
chimpanzees are a better model for the last common ancestor than
bonobos, gorillas, or orangutans. A thorough chapter-by-chapter
analysis reveals which key traits we share with chimpanzees and
which appear to be distinctive to Homo sapiens, and shows how
understanding chimpanzees helps us account for the evolution of
human uniqueness. Traits surveyed include social behaviors and
structures, mating systems, diet, hunting practices, tool use,
culture, cognition, and communication. Edited by three of
primatology's most renowned experts, with contributions from 32
scholars drawing on decades of field research, Chimpanzees and
Human Evolution provides readers with detailed up-to-date
information on what we can infer about our chimpanzee-like
ancestors and points the way forward for the next generation of
discoveries.
Utilizing data from a survey of attitudes and behavior of more than
2,500 residents of selected rural, urban, and university
communities in the Federal Republic of Germany, Edward Muller
attempts to formulate and to test a general multivariate theory
about what motivates individuals to participate in aggressive
political action. Since this kind of political behavior is
infrequent in addition to being difficult to measure, it rarely has
been subjected to rigorous scientific investigation at the
micro-level. Professor Muller's study is an attempt to understand
the causes of aggressive political participation using quantitative
techniques. Originally published in 1979. The Princeton Legacy
Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make
available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished
backlist of Princeton University Press. These editions preserve the
original texts of these important books while presenting them in
durable paperback and hardcover editions. The goal of the Princeton
Legacy Library is to vastly increase access to the rich scholarly
heritage found in the thousands of books published by Princeton
University Press since its founding in 1905.

Conflict between males and females over reproduction is
ubiquitous in nature due to fundamental differences between the
sexes in reproductive rates and investment in offspring. In only a
few species, however, do males strategically employ violence to
control female sexuality. Why are so many of these primates? Why
are females routinely abused in some species, but never in others?
And can the study of such unpleasant behavior by our closest
relatives help us to understand the evolution of men s violence
against women?
In the first systematic attempt to assess and understand
primate male aggression as an expression of sexual conflict, the
contributors to this volume consider coercion in direct and
indirect forms: direct, in overcoming female resistance to mating;
indirect, in decreasing the chance the female will mate with other
males. The book presents extensive field research and analysis to
evaluate the form of sexual coercion in a range of species
including all of the great apes and humans and to clarify its role
in shaping social relationships among males, among females, and
between the sexes.
With the continual growth of the world's urban population,
biodiversity in towns and cities will play a critical role in
global biodiversity. This is the first book to provide an overview
of international developments in urban biodiversity and sustainable
design. It brings together the views, experiences and expertise of
leading scientists and designers from the industrialised and
pre-industrialised countries from around the world. The
contributors explore the biological, cultural and social values of
urban biodiversity, including methods for assessing and evaluating
urban biodiversity, social and educational issues, and practical
measures for restoring and maintaining biodiversity in urban areas.
Contributions come from presenters at an international scientific
conference held in Erfurt, Germany 2008 during the 9th Conference
of the Parties of the Convention on Biodiversity. This is also Part
of our Conservation Science and Practice book series (with
Zoological Society of London).
In this book, the authors discuss the theory of operation,
behaviour and safety regulations of capacitors. The topics include
(CCTO) ceramics as potential candidates for capacitor applications;
devices, materials and mechanisms of capacitive sensors for gas and
humidity detections; an overview of the leakage current mechanisms
of ultra-thin gate dielectrics used in new-age capacitors and
transistors; integration of capacitors into integrated circuits;
and the impact of capacitor energization over the power quality of
the MV distribution grid.
