Grassroots Warriors - Activist Mothering, Community Work, and the War on Poverty (Hardcover): Nancy A. Naples Grassroots Warriors - Activist Mothering, Community Work, and the War on Poverty (Hardcover)
Nancy A. Naples
R4,451 Discovery Miles 44 510 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Who are the grassroots warriors on the front lines of the war on poverty? Through in-depth interviews, Nancy Naples presents the voices of over sixty women--African American, Puerto Rican and white European American--who have fought for social and economic justice in the low-income neighborhoods of New York City and Philadelphia. These women, as community workers and activist mothers, contribute vital and often unpaid services to ther communities, offering complex political perspectives and empowering others. Naples reconceptualizes labor, mothering and politics from the standpoint of women committed to work and politically organize on behalf of low income urban communities. Her analysis reveals significant legacies from past social movements, and examines how gender, ethnicity and class influence political consciousness and practice.

Grassroots Warriors - Activist Mothering, Community Work, and the War on Poverty (Paperback, New): Nancy A. Naples Grassroots Warriors - Activist Mothering, Community Work, and the War on Poverty (Paperback, New)
Nancy A. Naples
R1,540 Discovery Miles 15 400 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Grassroots Warriors explores the connections among motherhood, work, politics, and community in low-income urban environments. Through in-depth interviews, the author presents the voices of over sixty women - African, American, Latina American, and white - who have been on the front lines of the fight for social justice and economic survival in low-income neighbourhoods in New York City and Philadelphia. Many of the women profiled have been/are single mothers, receiving welfare, and living in supposedly blighted urban areas. In contrast to the mythic 'welfare queen' stereotype, Naples argues that, as community workers and activist mothers, these women contribute vital unpaid and paid services to their communities, offer complex political perspectives, and help to empower others. The analysis reveals the significant legacies of the social movements of the 1960s as well as the War on Poverty.

Border Politics - Social Movements, Collective Identities, and Globalization (Paperback): Nancy A. Naples, Jennifer Bickham M... Border Politics - Social Movements, Collective Identities, and Globalization (Paperback)
Nancy A. Naples, Jennifer Bickham M endez
R809 Discovery Miles 8 090 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

In the current historical moment borders have taken on heightened material and symbolic significance, shaping identities and the social and political landscape. "Borders"--defined broadly to include territorial dividing lines as well as sociocultural boundaries--have become increasingly salient sites of struggle over social belonging and cultural and material resources. How do contemporary activists navigate and challenge these borders? What meanings do they ascribe to different social, cultural and political boundaries, and how do these meanings shape the strategies in which they engage? Moreover, how do these social movements confront internal borders based on the differences that emerge within social change initiatives? Border Politics, edited by Nancy A. Naples and Jennifer Bickham Mendez, explores these important questions through eleven carefully selected case studies situated in geographic contexts around the globe. By conceptualizing struggles over identity, social belonging and exclusion as extensions of border politics, the authors capture the complex ways in which geographic, cultural, and symbolic dividing lines are blurred and transcended, but also fortified and redrawn. This volume notably places right-wing and social justice initiatives in the same analytical frame to identify patterns that span the political spectrum. Border Politics offers a lens through which to understand borders as sites of diverse struggles, as well as the strategies and practices used by diverse social movements in today's globally interconnected world. Contributors: Phillip Ayoub, Renata Blumberg, Yvonne Braun, Moon Charania, Michael Dreiling, Jennifer Johnson, Jesse Klein, Andrej Kurnik, Sarah Maddison, Duncan McDuie-Ra, Jennifer Bickham Mendez, Nancy A. The Sexuality of Migration provides an innovative study of the experiences of Mexican men who have same sex with men and who have migrated to the United States.

Until recently, immigration scholars have left out the experiences of gays and lesbians. In fact, the topic of sexuality has only recently been addressed in the literature on immigration. The Sexuality of Migration makes significant connections among sexuality, state institutions, and global economic relations. Cantu; situates his analysis within the history of Mexican immigration and offers a broad understanding of diverse migratory experiences ranging from recent gay asylum seekers to an assessment of gay tourism in Mexico. Cantu uses a variety of methods including archival research, interviews, and ethnographic research to explore the range of experiences of Mexican men who have sex with men and the political economy of sexuality and immigration. His primary research site is the greater Los Angeles area, where he interviewed many immigrant men and participated in organizations and community activities alongside his informants.

Sure to fill gaps in the field, The Sexuality of Migration simultaneously complicates a fixed notion of sexual identity and explores the complex factors that influence immigration and migration experiences.
