Based upon lectures presented at an invitational colloquium in
honor of Nico Frijda, this collection of essays represents a brief
and up-to-date overview of the field of emotions, their
significance and how they function. For most, emotions are simply
what we feel, giving our lives affective value. Scientists approach
emotions differently -- some considering the "feeling" aspect to be
of little relevance to their research questions. Some investigators
consider emotions from a phenomenological perspective, while others
believe that the psychophysiological bases of the emotions are of
prime importance, and still others observe and study animals in
order to generate hypotheses about human emotions. Containing
essays which represent each of these approaches, this book is in
one sense a heterogenous collection. Nevertheless, the variety of
approaches and interests come together, since these scholars are
all operating from a more or less cognitive psychological
orientation and use the same conceptual reference scheme. Written
by experts in their own area, the essays reflect the richness of
research in emotions. Whether these approaches and opinions can be
harmonized into a single theory of emotions is a question which the
future will have to answer.

Conservation Physiology for the Anthropocene: A Systems Approach,
Volume 39A in the Fish Physiology series, is a comprehensive
synthesis on the physiology of fish in the Anthropocene. This
volume closes the knowledge gap by considering the many ways in
which different physiological systems (e.g., sensory physiology,
endocrine, cardio-respiratory, bioenergetics, water and ionic
balance and homeostasis, locomotion/biomechanics, gene function)
and physiological diversity are relevant to management and
conservation. As the world is changing, with a dire need to
identify solutions to the many environmental problems facing wild
fish populations, this book comprehensively covers conservation
physiology and its future techniques. Conservation physiology
reveals the many ways in which environmental change and human
activities can negatively influence wild fish populations. These
tactics inform new management and conservation activities and help
create the necessary conditions for fish to thrive.
Several important aspects of moduli spaces and irreducible
holomorphic symplectic manifolds were highlighted at the conference
“Algebraic and Complex Geometry†held September 2012 in
Hannover, Germany. These two subjects of recent ongoing progress
belong to the most spectacular developments in Algebraic and
Complex Geometry. Irreducible symplectic manifolds are of interest
to algebraic and differential geometers alike, behaving similar to
K3 surfaces and abelian varieties in certain ways, but being by far
less well-understood. Moduli spaces, on the other hand, have been a
rich source of open questions and discoveries for decades and still
continue to be a hot topic in itself as well as with its interplay
with neighbouring fields such as arithmetic geometry and string
theory. Beyond the above focal topics this volume reflects the
broad diversity of lectures at the conference and comprises 11
papers on current research from different areas of algebraic and
complex geometry sorted in alphabetic order by the first author. It
also includes a full list of speakers with all titles and
abstracts.

It is not easy for a layman to attract attention to a book like
this. Most who open the cover will be professionals in one of the
many aspects of mental health. A moment's thought tells us,
however, that if there is a distinction between laymen and
professionals it makes no difference to a book like this. Both
laymen and professionals care about what will be. That is why this
book, the Congress it reports and the World Federation for Mental
Health itself can be meaningful to both laymen and professional
people. A look into the 80's from the point of view of mental
health, cultural values and social development is for all who care
about the future. The 1981 Manila Congress of the World Federation
for Mental Health was a unique and special gathering. It was the
first time the Federation assembled for a Congress in a developing
country. In the Philippines we enjoyed the over whelming
hospitality and charm of the people and a place where past and
future seem as important as the present. All who attended from
outside those magic islands will always remember the occasion as a
special life experience. For those of you who did attend, this book
can revive the stimulation and satisfaction of the Congress. For
those of you who did not share the Manila experience, this book can
inform and interest you about matters which are important."
