'But deep down, we all know the only thing I did wrong was be a
girl who spoke up. A girl who refused to stay silent. And... I'm
still not gonna stay silent, because this stuff is too important to
keep ignoring.' When social media goes into a frenzy over pictures
of a girl at a party, Louise's teacher lectures all the schoolgirls
on taking more responsibility for their actions. Enraged that it's
them getting reprimanded - and not the boys who took the pictures -
Louise wages war on the school's systemic misogyny. But when she
threatens popular boy Scott, risking his claim to the School
Captain title, things escalate horribly; a website appears,
objectifying the girls and shaming them for their actions. Natalie
Mitchell's play explores everyday feminism, consent and the
changing face of teenage sexuality in an online world. Is it always
true that 'when they go low', we should go high? Written
specifically for young people, the play formed part of the 2018
National Theatre Connections Festival and was premiered by youth
theatres across the UK. It offers rich opportunities for a large
cast of all genders, with particularly strong roles for young
women.
Ashley is sixteen. She's lived in Medway for fifteen years and six
months. She has 2,354 leaflets on sexual health. She knows exactly
how many she has, because she's counted them 1,582 times... At 7.48
p.m. tonight, she will have been going out with Ollie for exactly
three months, which he thinks means it's time to take their
relationship to the next level; especially given her position as
their school's resident expert on sexual health. But what if
counting leaflets can't protect Ashley from getting hurt when she
decides to take her biggest risk yet? Natalie Mitchell's play Germ
Free Adolescent is a fierce, funny and irreverent OCD love story
that asks: what exactly is 'normal' anyway? It received its first
full production at The Bunker, London, in October 2019, having
previously toured Kent where the play was researched and developed
with young people, youth workers and mental-health services.
Theatre has a funny way of getting to the heart of who we are now
and - particularly in the case of Connections - who we are going to
be. Drawing together the work of nine leading playwrights, National
Theatre Connections 2018 features work by some of the most exciting
contemporary playwrights. Gathered together in one volume, the
plays offer young performers an engaging selection of material to
perform, read or study. From friends building bridges and siblings
breaking down walls; girls making their voice heard and boys
searching for home; and not forgetting a band of unlikely action
heroes taking control of the weather. The anthology contains nine
play scripts along with imaginative production notes and exercises,
as well as a short introduction to the writing process for the
tenth Connections play [ BLANK ] by Alice Birch. National Theatre
Connections is an annual festival which brings new plays for young
people to schools and youth theatres across the UK and Ireland.
Commissioning exciting work from leading playwrights, the festival
exposes actors aged 13-19 to the world of professional
theatre-making, giving them full control of a theatrical production
- from costume and set design to stage management and marketing
campaigns. NT Connections have published over 150 original plays
and regularly works with 500 theatre companies and 10,000 young
people each year.
